This Is Your Year The 1965 Publication of the Yearbook Staff of WOODINGTON HIGH SCHOOL Kinston, North Carolina Interested spectators eagerly watch the Mighty Longhorns take the floor. Through the Physical Ed Department facilities the students learn good sportsmanship and the fundamentals of various sports. To keep the body physically fit is as important as keeping the mind mentally stimulated. . : FOREWORD . You, the green, but sophisticated, sophomore; you, the expectant, hard- working junior; you, the self assured, confident senior - to everyone at Wood- ington High — THIS IS YOUR YEAR, It is a year filled with moments of laughter, excitement, friendship, and study. Although many of these mo- ments may seem insignificant, these are the things that make a year memor- able. Whether cheering your team to victory, cramming for the quiz you just heard about, or having the time of your life at the dance, you will come to treasure these moments for they make up Your Year. In this volume we have attempted to preserve these memories that you may never forget this — Your Year. A The cafeteria once again is flooded with students as another year begins. Confusion, Classes, Quality Education . . . The eagerly awaited and sometimes dreaded opening days began with noisy chaos in the halls. New friends, new faces, new teachers, and new classes added to tlie disorderly order. Work and fun began, and everyone knew the year was in full swing. Senior Betty Whitfield tries to avoid camera. In The Beginning September Well, Its back to work Again, We ' ll be glad when we are Educated. Seventh Grade Students get our Assembly programs off to a good start! Beauty is its own exc use for being. October Features Fall, Fun, And Frolic Best Looking Senior Carrie Grant represents Woodington in Adkin’s Homecoming Parade. Nervous tension rose as the spectators eagerly watch- ed the game, not heeding the noise-not heeding anything except the WHS Players’ fight for victory. Good sportsmanship was understood with little said con- cerning it, and there developed a feeling of pride in the team and in the school-the long awaited feeling of school spirit. Victory, Victory is our cry! as Freddie Murrell jumps for the toss. 12 November . . . Faculty Talent Show FALL FIESTA Service above and beyond the call of duty” was the opinion of the tired but rather happy students and teachers as our fall projects ended. Thanksgiving vacation at last came, and students were finally able to collapse in relief, practicing their favorite pastime- loafing. Retiring Queen, Essie Hodges, adorns her throne for the last time. Sighs of Relief . . .Thanksgiving V acation 13 These girk were the Shindig Dancers in the Annual Staff Talent Show. Shirley Dove made a beautiful Christmas Angel. December . . . The Fun Of Activities The Fantastic Four won second The traditional but still beautiful prize with their version of Sand In Christmas Tree. My Shoes. j3 In attempts to decide their future schools, Seniors carefully study various catalogues. Tempered By Thoughts Of The Future Moments of solitude and thoughts of the future break into every schedule. I im The excitement of basketball season added interest and enthus- iasm to winter months. The exhausted look of victory. Winter, Work, Anc As the wear and tear of mid-term exams wore off, seniors began to look toward graduation; juniors toward the prom; and sophomores, toward the dread biology projects of classifying bugs and flowers. Beautiful, gay, but dignified, the Homecoming Ceremon- ies were the scenes of hope fulfilled as worthy students were honored. Worry . . . January Exams tournament. The glitter of new class rings holds the complete at- tention of seniors. Nothing is more beautiful than this symbol of finally being on the way out. Class Rings Sparkle . . . And the snow came . . . Proud Students Glow — February 18 Hours of preparation and practice by the home economics students resulted in a beautiful fashion show which received many favorable comments. March — Preparation For Coming Events — April Maybe she will become a model. For W H S March is a month of preparation. Secretive juniors whispered and hurried about as plans for the Junior-Senior Prom progressed. Sophomores unfruitful searches revealed almost no insects to be found until the April warmth brought successful field trips. The four walls of a school room suddenly became too much as the warmth of the great outdoors beckoned. 19 May — The Beginning Of The End — June Senior week, graduation practice, that strange feeling of joy and nostalgia, and the excitement of those last days brought the year to a close. Each event was greeted by Seniors’ cries that it is the last. Looking back brought memories of work, pleasure, friendship, and the realization that the year had passed with the speed of wonderful times, leaving lasting memories that we will come to treasure. So those who work diligently . . . Newscaster Annie Joyce King Our secretary and her student assistants prepare to run the final examinations. 20 Is Your Year OF EDUCATION .
