X Our Hnsiory Ninety years ago, our school, one of the first in Steuben County, was established as the Woodhull Academ , a three-stony wooden structure on the present site donated by Orin Baxter and Hamilton Marlatt. 4SQkMf 9, do , p 555:25 Q 'ein wuvwiuni nu un w r's11 'r 1 The enrollment or the Academy was between two and three hundred students, many of whom came from the surrounding counties and towns and boarded in the second floor dormitory of the school. Here the preceptress and the principal enforced the strict school regulations under difficulties mul- tiplied by the fact that girls' and boys' dorms were in tantalizing prox- imity. Even under their watchful eyes the girls developed a novel way of conveying male friends up to the dormitories for strictly taboo meetings. ...i 1 X At a secret signal from the boys a large basket was lowered from the window by means of a rope. The boys climed into the basket and were raised one at a time to the second story. One night Prin- cipal Cobb, hearing rumors of these clandestine meetings, gave the required signal. Imagine the girls' surprise when they found their principal in the basket! if During the next years the faculty was increased, equipment, and sub- jects were added, until in 1910 the school attained the long-sought rating of high school. Then in 1926, fire leveled the boarding acad- em , and the present brick structure was erected. The south wing was added in 1941. Woodhull has among its graduates the author of a best-seller, and a Lieutentant Governor, as well as other distinguished alumni. Today Woodhull High is one of the last Union Free Schools in New York State. Iy has served its community long and well, maintaining a high standard among its sister schools. As we, the class of 1958, join the ranks of the Alumni, we pause to salute our Alma Mater, proud of the ninety year heritage in which we have had a part.
