From the time Wooddale opened in 1967, and even before, our principal, Mr. D. Winton Simmons worked relentlessly to secure the best for our school. He is a truly dedicated man, faithful to the goals of educa- tion, yet always conscious of the needs of individuals. During his three years as chief of Wooddale, he has guided us ever forward toward the many accomplish- ments we have won in the fields of scholarship, athletics, human relations, and extra-curricular activities. This is our principal -this is Mr. Simmons, a friend to all, facul- ty and students alike, a busy man. Yet he is never too busy to chat with a student, lend a helpful hand with Shake and bakew for the Latin banquet, or to study ways and means to improve the physical and spiritual needs of Wooddale. It is with a deep sense of appreciation that we the staff, on behalf of the entire student body, dedicate this book to you, Mr. Simmons, May your days at Wooddale be many to give to all who come after us the heritage you so freely gave to us. It was hard to tell who enjoyed Birdie,' more, the chorus, the cast, the art department, or the au- dience. We saw many tears when the great production came to an end. The Current Affairs Club was founded to promote student interest in current events through discussion and debate. This year the new club was interested in racial situations in Memphis, the Viet Nam war, ecol- ogy, Memphis city government, college life, particu- larly at Memphis State, and drug abuse. Speakers talked on each of the aforementioned subjects. The club made a trip to City Hall where the mem- bers observed a meeting of the City Council. A visit with Mayor Henry Loeb was also on the agenda. A Christmas party was given for the little girls from St. Peteris Orphanage. Woodaleis Quiz 'Em On the Air team earned a well deserved championship. The team won the first semester finals, came back and won Mid-South Championship. Congratulations! They provide scenery for our plays and bring culture to the school with their paintings. Wooddale will be enriched through- out the years as long as we have our outstanding Art Club. bl Science Club The Science Club has been one of the busiest clubs at Wooddale. Under the direction of Mrs. Turner, they have provided Wooddale with a beautiful garden, complete with a fountain and flowers. They also sponsored Wood- dale's science fair which had many winners and sent stu- dents to city competition. At various meetings the club had speakers such as Dr. Dan Claypool from the Chemis- try Department at Memphis State University speak to them. Wooddale appreciates the fine work the Science Club has done this year and hopes to have a bigger and better one next year. Every Science Student Is Invited T0 Participate. 62 F.H.A. Stays Busy Who had the most fun at the Christmas party for children from St. Peter's? Teri Pearson, Pat Carpenter. and Pam Aquadro would argue that point with you. And from their happy smiles we would agree that they enjoyed thc fun time as much as the children. The Future Homemakers of America have indeed had a busy and exciting year. At Christmas the girls had a party for the children of St. Peter's Orphanage. Another project was raising funds for the national F.H.A. headquarters, There are also girls planning to attend the annual state F.H.A. convention. During the Open House they staged a bake sale to raise money. With so many outstanding accomplish- ments to their credit Wooddale is proud of it's F.H.A. Club, and hopes the girls will start, an even bigger and more active year next fall. fi Now, now, girls, let's not eat up our profits. F.l'l.A. girls made- many goodies for the bake sale, and they were he- sieged with customers - faculty as well as students. 63 Girl 5 Athletrc Assocratwn May Day at Wooddale was more exciting than ever. The G.A.A. girls did a fine job of organizing and officiating the girls track events. G.A.A. or Girls Athletic Association is open to all girls who are enrolled in a Physical Education class or participate in girls sports in competition with other schools. These girls represented Wooddale well in track, field events, and volleyball. This is the first year Wood- dale has had such an organiza- tion, but it won't be the last. How proudly they performed for us and for others. And how proudly we watched them achieve victory after victory. Hail, Sabrettes. 66 Sponsors And Sabre Club The Sabre Club is composed of Wooddale's ROTC officers and the sponsors. This year the clulfs proj- ect was to send Christmas packages to needy families. The club did an outstanding job in this project. The sponsors drilled every Fri- day with the boys and they were entered in competition with the ROTC sponsors from all the other schools in Memphis. Mrs. Barnes and Major Sperry are faculty sponsors. The W Club is for all athletes who earn a letter in any sport. Among their projects this year was selling place mats to make money for the club, and they sponsored a basketball shoot at Open House. They yelled and smiled their way through football and basketball season with very little time for breathing. Many of them have done this for three years. Cheerleading is not all honors. The entire summer is spent at cheerleading camp or at school practicing. But all the work brought OUR cheerleaders a third place tro- phy in the Mid-South Fair competition against the other Memphis schools. They gave their time for the school, and the school thanks them. Shout for the red, white, and bluew was never sung enough as far as our cheerlead- ers were concerned. ' , 1 vhlx I ' V ,ul . -. -..fenf- ' at Hopefully, by the time a student completes English 12, he has learned to do far more than undangle participles. He should be able to in- telligently evaluate and discuss many kinds of novels, poetry, and drama. He should be able to express his thoughts logically and concisely in an original manner. and, above all, he should emerge from Wooddale with a desire to further his knowledge and understanding of literature, either in college or on his own. Wooddale's English teachers strive for these goals in their own particular ways. Many endow their classes with generous measures of their own personalities. A dry wit, a piercing thoroughness, an offbeat point of view - all these qualities contribute to making English a subject which both imparts and perpetuates learning. IIO English - Key To Se? fxpression Math And Science - Logi ln algebra, geometry, and trig they have nothing but prob- lems, problems, problems. Wooddalels students learn not only how to solve equations, prove theorems, find the deriva- tive of a function, and use radian measure, but also learn to think logically, The math students learn to think through a problem to a logical solution. Logic - the core of mathemat- ics is used and will be used in the future' by our students. ,,.4-1-of and Experimentation 1 , From general science to physics, science students are hard at work . . . memorizing facts, formulas, and hypothesesg conducting exper- iments, cutting up frogs, and won- dering what in the world they could put together for a science project. The students come out with an increased knowledge of our scientific world and an increased appreciation of the world around us. II3 Social Studies Linking The Past And Present Wooddale offers many courses to help develop an understanding of the cultural heritage of the United States, Western Civilization, and the world in gener- al. The Social Studies courses include: American History, Government, Economics, and World Histo- ry. A new program at Wooddale combines American History and eleventh grade English. The study of these related subjects has been proved very effective. These courses develop an understanding of the students' own city, county, state, and nationg geo- graphically and socially, as it exists today. As a re- sult, these courses develop an understanding of the responsibilities of citizens working together in a democratic society. Latin - A live Only the most cultured stu- dents enroll in Latin according to Miss Aste and her students. And we are about to believe this. ln the rarified air of C0- rinthian columns, Greek con- jugations on the blackboards, and a velvet draped household god QClark Gablej, it is easy to see the enchantment of Latin. The students claim that there is never a dull moment. Il5 La ensenanza de las lengues extraneras nos ayerdan comprender las cultura del mundo. Comprehension de estas languas es la leave para la formacion de buenos veeinos en el mundo. The study of Spanish gives students the op- portunity to become better neighbors with cit- izens of the many Spanish-speaking countries near us. Mrs. Bourland contributes much to make the study of the Spanish language and culture inter- esting. Students can become more proficient in the use of Spanish through using the language lab. The members of the Spanish Club enjoy eat- ing Spanish food when they dine together at a Spanish restaurant. Modern Languages , fnderstanding Our Neighbors i Q t Ijenseignement des langages etrangers nous aide a comprendre les cultures du moyen. With the election of officers and the money raising projects, the Seniors began their final march. As the months progressed, problems arose and descended - always checked by our hard work- ing officers and advisors. For most of the Wooddale students the year 1970 meant nothing but for 200 students it was a turning point in their lives. There will be many Senior Classes for Wooddale but there will never be another first graduating class. ini erious And Care ree James Bruce Adams Robert L. 'Elm The buses were loaded and the roll was checked - Mr. Shelby played the piano and refreshments were served - these were the beginnings of two of our Senior activities. With the warmth of spring upon us and a cold winter behind us four busloads of Seniors trooped out to Shelby Forest. Amid all the poison oak and mud every Senior restored himself back into the bus for the trip home. For a more solemn occasion attention was turned to the Senior reception. For the teachers and stu- dents it provided one last opportunity to break away from the classroom and to discuss among themselves. lt all seemed unreal, but it was true - the final ac- tivities had begun. gf? The arrangements were made, and the day for the first step arrived. It was a Wednesday, and the step was the Senior Luncheon. The atmosphere was well accented with excellent entertainment and lovely surroundings. Indeed, every Senior will have a fond memory of the Senior Luncheon. The second step proved to be much more reserved and dignified. lt was another first for Wooddale. It was the Baccalaureate for the Class of '70, As 200 students listened to the program which was pre- sented for them, they recalled the years behind them and looked hopefully to the years to come. For the first graduating class of Wooddale it was a special year. ln a way it was a very important year for the entire school. Traditions were set which will be carried forward through other Senior years. So for the Seniors the month of May brought much excitement. The highlight of that excitement arrived on the night of May 19. As the 1970 Seniors of Wooddale marched down that aisle the past twelve years flashed before them, and the next twelve years brought many questions to their minds. For two hundred and ten students the end of one phase of life is over. Ahead of them lies the world to come. They are now the grad- uates of Wooddale High School. Glee Club And Band The junior high school had its own music. A talented band and an enthusiastic choral group performed often during the year. The long and arduous practice sessions really paid off when their proud sponsors, Miss Shirley Witte fchorusj and Mr. Daryl Vinson fbandj presented these groups in the various concerts and contests. They not only won honors in competitions, but they performed a valuable service to the school and community by participation in sports events andschool functions. All right, kids.
