SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE Graduation from an American high school terminates free public education which is guaranteed to all young people of our nation. As graduates, you carry with you certain responsibilities. The first responsibility is to continue to seek knowledge and to develop your cultural and business backgrounds. Your second responsibility is to don the mantle of citizenship and to work as hard as possible to make our society a better place in which to live. It is we who perfect our society and our nation, and we do it by being intelligent and economically productive citizens. The third responsibility which you have is to be very sure that the advantages which you have had to date are maintained and perfected for the next generation. As American citizens, we assume the education of American Youth as one of our major responsibilities. American youth must be served, so that our nation, its economy, and its way of life may continue to prosper. The year 1963 will hold a very vivid and disturbing memory for all of us. In this year, as we worked in our respective classrooms and offices, a great president of the United States was assassinated. With this, not only a great man perished, but the very principles which we believe in were violated before our eyes. In 1837, Abraham Lincoln in discussing the future of our country said: ... ALL THE ARMIES OF EUROPE, ASIA AND AFRICA COMBINED, WITH ALL THE TREASURE OF THE EARTH (OUR OWN EXCEPTED) IN THEIR MILITARY CHEST, WITH A BONAPARTE FOR A COMMANDER, COULD NOT BY FORCE TAKE A DRINK FROM THE OHIO OR MAKE A TRACK ON THE BLUE RIDGE IN A TRIAL OF A THOUSAND YEARS. AT WHAT POINT, IS THE APPROACH OF DANGER TO BE EXPECTED? I ANSWER IF IT EVER REACHES US IT MUST SPRING UP AMONGST US; IT CANNOT COME FROM ABROAD. IF DESTRUCTION BE OUR LOT WE MUST OURSELVES BE ITS AUTHOR AND FINISHER. The responsibility for maintaining this nation and its beliefs passes on from generation to generation. It must be remembered that this responsibility should be guarded jealously, and ways to improve the nation should be sought energetically. In a very few years, the business of running this great nation, state, and community will be placed in your hands. On behalf of the faculty members of the Woodbury Public Schools, who have given much of themselves to prepare you for the tasks which lie ahead, I wish you well in all of your future endeavors. HUGH E. McGUIGAN SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS 4 MR. HUGH McGUIGAN Superintendent

Now if you were standing on a street corner ... is a familiar introduction to our lessons. The Athletic Association receives encouragement and advice from its advisor.
