DEDICATION William P. Bauer, standing at the rostrum, hands in wiry reddish hair or adjusting glasses, has explained abstract concepts in terms which we can grasp; he has used imaginary figures such as Joe Woodbury and Fred Fridley to make clear the meanings of various novels, poems and essays. His bulletin board with headlines like “New House Rules” and “Cultural-Philosophical Peep-show” is as familiar to us as his own lean form balancing precariously on the edge of his chair to diagram on the portable blackboard. Although we have received frequent incompletes and failures for sentence errors, we have accepted the challenge to meet Mr. Bauer’s rigorous standards and to complete the course successfully. We have listened to him tell us again and again to be specific and to pin down generalizations; we have laughed at his comments on returned themes; we have spent most of every night on English homework; and we have left each class with a sense of accomplishment. Any teacher’s attitude is communicated to his students, and we have acquired from Mr. Bauer a small part of his love for English grammar and literature. We shall remember on our last day with him the words we heard on the first: “ I love teaching English; you may all flunk this year if you don’t work, but we’ll have fun.”
