Who is the great Warrior? Who is he That every student here should strive to be? He is the generous spirit, who, when brought Among the tasks of real life, hath wrought Upon the plan that pleased his careful thought. Whose high endeavors are an inward light That makes the path before him always bright. Who, with a natural instinct to discern What knowledge can perform, is diligent. WOODBURY HIGH SCHOOL WOODBURY, CONNECTICUT warrior 1961 table of contents dedication administration classes activities athletics advertisements 3 WILLIAM P. BAUER “Be specific!” DEDICATION William P. Bauer, standing at the rostrum, hands in wiry reddish hair or adjusting glasses, has explained abstract concepts in terms which we can grasp; he has used imaginary figures such as Joe Woodbury and Fred Fridley to make clear the meanings of various novels, poems and essays. His bulletin board with headlines like “New House Rules” and “Cultural-Philosophical Peep-show” is as familiar to us as his own lean form balancing precariously on the edge of his chair to diagram on the portable blackboard. Although we have received frequent incompletes and failures for sentence errors, we have accepted the challenge to meet Mr. Bauer’s rigorous standards and to complete the course successfully. We have listened to him tell us again and again to be specific and to pin down generalizations; we have laughed at his comments on returned themes; we have spent most of every night on English homework; and we have left each class with a sense of accomplishment. Any teacher’s attitude is communicated to his students, and we have acquired from Mr. Bauer a small part of his love for English grammar and literature. We shall remember on our last day with him the words we heard on the first: “ I love teaching English; you may all flunk this year if you don’t work, but we’ll have fun.” A D M I N I S T R A T I O N DR. STEPHEN K. LOVETT Superintendent of Schools Harvard; D.Ed. H. STUART PICKARD Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent Bridgewater State College; B.S.Ed. Harvard; M.Ed. CHARLOTTE H. ISHAM Supervisor of Instruction of Woodbury Public Schools Danbury State Teachers College; B.E. Yale Graduate School of Education; M.A. Harvard Graduate School of Education Miss Isham, Dr. Lovett, Mr. Pickard To the class of 1961: I wish to thank the members of the class of 1961 for their help in establishing an educational climate in the Woodbury High School which recognizes the real values of intellectual growth and achievement. At one time high academic achievement by an individual was frowned upon by others. Today, however, high achievement is accepted as a worthwhile goal by most students. I can attribute part of this change to the graduating class. The class of 1961 includes six students who have been recognized in the National Merit Scholarship program. This fact in itself is less important than the fact that the members of this class as a whole have developed a curiosity about ideas and have found enjoyment in intellectual pursuits. The future looks bright for the class of 1961. ou have my best wishes for success in whatever endeavor you undertake. STEPHEN K.
