Four years ago we launched as freshmen, Bewildered yet proud; We came, stayed, learned. Then we met stormy seas as sophomores, Wise fools; We sailed on, learning still, Changing with age. Accomplished seamen, now, We braved the junior gales. Successors to the class of ’59. In the calmer waters of senior year, We prepare to go, And we leave this book as a record of Our voyage. In spite of the fact that this thoughtful and sincere person has opinions on many subjects, he has never tried to impose his judgments upon us. Rather, in an impartial way, he has taught us to make our own decisions. His warm and effective manner has kept his subject, history, from seeming like a chronological list of events; instead, it is more like a story of human failures and achievements. That we are all an integral and participating part of this story is perhaps his greatest lesson. In his unobtrusive manner he has been the force behind many of our worthwhile endeavors. He has acted as our class advisor. He has patiently and unselfishly devoted much of his time and energy to many of our extracurricular activities. Although we delighted in making him blush and made him the target of numerous practical jokes, our respect for him was intensified by the manner in which he accepted and tolerated our foolishness. His example of modest competence is an inspiration to us all. His greatest quality, however, is his boundless faith and trust in us, his students. It is because of these qualities that we have chosen to dedicate this, the 1960 Warrior, to Mr. Edgar Buck. ‘According to the New York Times . . .” 5 Left to right: George H. Wadsworth, Andrew D. ISHAM Supervisor of Instruction MR. H. STUART PICKARD Administrative Assistant ORDER OF THE DAY To The Class of I960 The teachers of Woodbury High School have tried not only to provide you with the opportunity of gaining an adequate education but also to provide you with a respect for education. You have become aware of the greater advances that have been made in all the fields of learning and of the rapid strides that have been made in the field of science. It is common for us to discuss atomic energy, radar, jet planes, missiles, rockets, and space travel. It is essential for us to remember that without education many of these advances would never have been made. Education is the key to the modern world and the present century could very well be called The Age of Education. I should like to encourage you to take advantages of the many opportunities offered you upon graduation from high school to further your education. Stephen K. On May 21, the juniors and seniors borrowed a part of the heavens for their prom, “Stairway to the Stars.” White fluffy clouds and glittering stars were put beneath the eaves of Woodbury High’s gym. A majestic stairway adorned with gleaming stars led to the celestial heavens. WAUZ’s Jimmy Peters and his orchestra provided the background music for the evening. Jimmy, who plays alto saxophone, has played lead saxophone with many of the country’s leading orchestras, such as Tony Pastor, Les and Larry Elgart and the late Jimmy Dorsey. Jimmy Peters’ Orchestra was selected to play at the second annual Jazz Concert at the New Haven Art’s Festival. Under the direction of Virginia delPo and Linda Kerner, the gym was decorated with silver crepe paper and gleaming stars. Corky Newell and Bob Henderson directed the building of the stairway, and Marilyn Mazaika directed the construction of the angel-hair cloud. Charles Chapman was in charge of tickets. The remaining prom committee members and fellow classmates worked diligently under the supervision of those previously mentioned. Last, but not least, the entire prom committee wishes to extend its gratitude to our advisor, Mr. Arminio, our art teacher, Mr. Charles DeCarlo and to Mr. Pete Lane, head custodian. Without their help, the prom couldn’t have been a success. 46 Simplified Parliamentary Procedure Based on Robert's Rules of Order SEATED: Donna Stevenson, Nancy Greene, Mr. Buck, advisor; Lydia Smith, secretary; Thomas Starkweather, president; Stephen Lovett. vice president; Russell Bradford, treasurer; Thomas Devin, Marion Griswold. STUDENT COUNCIL During the year 1959-60, the Woodbury High School Student Council has had a busy and productive year. The Student Council has tried not only to alert the student body of school affairs but to introduce new policies. Along these lines, the Student Council sponsored a get-acquainted dance during the' first week of the school year. During National Education Week, several foreign exchange students visited Woodbury High School as guests of the Student Council and the administration. A stereophonic hi-fidelity and public address system was purchased and installed, by the Student Council, with the proceeds from the annual Magazine Drive held the previous year. This year the Magazine Drive was run for the first time by the Student Council rather than the administration. With the cooperation of the school cafeteria staff the Student Council posted a weekly menu on the main bulletin board. The Student Council took charge of scheduling events for the high school and established a set of rules governing the mode of dress required for school social events. The Student Council aided in revising the cheerleading constitution and took charge of sales of WHS jackets. For the convenience of the student body, the minutes of all the meetings were posted on the main bulletin board after being approved. At the time of this writing the pros and cons of an award system for extracurricular activities and scholastic achievements were under investigation. The Student Council wishes to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Lovett and the faculty, especially their advisor, Mr. Buck, for their help and co-operation throughout the year. 48 Shape up or ship out! SCIENCE CLUB The year 1959-60 was a busy one for the Woodbury Science Club. Among its activities were a dance, an inspiring trip to the Chase Brass and Copper Mills, an assembly on pathology featuring a speaker from Waterbury Hospital. The bi-weekly meeting included lab demonstrations and programs of individual laboratory experiments under the sponsorship of the National Science Club. The club feels that it was a really prosperous year. 51 FIRST ROW: G. Barlow, H. Neal. SECOND ROW: Mr. Ripper, H. Kennedy, P. Robert, H. Leonard, T. Gauthier, J. Coviello, W. Benson THIRD ROW: E.
