Q-n .gl Y' HENRY TOY, JR.-'3I 4' MR. HENRY TOY, JR. One evening in I946, a man wenf To a meefing of fhe Oak Grove. Delaware. P. T. A. because his wife couldn'+ affend and he felf someone oughf fo represenf his family, as he had fwo small children, one of school age. Af The meefing he was asked his opinions on some phases of educafion and expressed himself so candidly and clearly fhaf he was chosen fha? same nighf as chairman of fhe P. T. A.'s com- miffee fo raise feachers' salaries. The commiffee decided fhaf fhe inferesf of fhe Delaware Congress of P. T. A.'s was needed in The quesfion, and subsequenfly fhe chairman of +ha+ Congress asked fhis man fo serve as presidenf of a new council for Delaware educa- fion, organized +o bring beffer schools fo fhe sfafe. Thus Mr. Henry Toy, Jr., who graduafed from Woodbury High in l93I, was swepf info fhe educafional field. All fhis while, Mr. Toy was holding a posi- fion as fhe head of a deparfmenf for DuPonf's in Wilmingfon. ln I948 he was presenfed fhe disfinguished Service Award as Young Man of fhe Year by fhe Wilmingfon Junior Chamber of Commerce for his work in fhe educafional field, and in I949 he received a nafional award for an indusfrial paper he wrofe. Alfhough doing very well in indusfry, Mr. Toy resigned from DuPonf's in Augusf I949 and moved fo Mamora Neck, New York. fo fake a posifion as presidenf of fhe Nafional Cifizens Commiffee for fhe Public Schools. This is a group of cifizens, nof represenfing any organi- zafion, whose purpose is bringing educafion info fhe public eye and frying 'ro hold educafional group meefings all over fhe counfry. Mr. Toy sfarfed working af fhe Aflanfic Refining Company in Philadelphia as an office boy. He married BeHy Voelker, class of l933, in l935. He graduafed wifh honors from fhe Evening School of Accounfs and Finance, af fhe Universify of Pennsylvania, as class presidenf, joined DuPonf's as an accounfanf, and worked up fo be an expedifer, The manager of priorifies, and fhe head of fhe surplus maferials and non- ferrous mefals deparfmenf, fhe posifion which he held when he became presidenf of fhe Na- fional Cifizens Commiffee for Public Schools.
