Answer: The Band, of course. Besides fumishing a free concert in the spring the band plays at games, at the annual Christmas program, May Day, and the Dad's and Mother's' Day programs. This busy little group is directed by E. Donald Jessop, who is secretly proud of the progress made by his band. The first chapter was established in 1922 in Chicago at a meeting of Secondary School Prin- cipals. By 1945 there were 3,294 chapters established throughout the United States. The Woodburn Chapter was instituted in May 1953. The faculty com- mittee constitutes the electing body. Election to the National Honor Society is based upon four factors: namely, Character, Scholarship, Leadership and Service. During this past year, the National Honor Society chose as its cont- ribution to the school the presentation of the flag of our country at the basketball games. The bearer and two color guards stood at attention with the flag while our band played the Star Spangled Banner. To be eligible, a girl must have participated in e- nough sports to add up to fifty points. Afterwards, she must make at least 50 points a year to maintain member- ship. To earn a sweater she must have 100 points, and to eam a letter she must have IH? points. The purpose of the organization is to build up inter- est in the girl's sports around the school-not for com- petition, but for fun. They have play-days with surround- ing schools and they have inner-school activities in which the girls can earn points. ' Q l if , .1- X gf-,af '- b 32 my ,.,., .... , 'lizf ' . Under the direction of Marshall Barbour and Georganne The in, the students who were not engaged in inter-scholastic competition got a chance to participate in some sport during the year. At the beginning of each sport a period of general play was carried on to give the students a chance to get acquainted with the sport and learn the rules. Then teams were organized and participated in tournaments to determine the champion. Among the duties of the group is the sponsorship of the many student activities, rang- ing from the athletic program through the social activities to the assorted clubs. New Woodburn high student council is a member of the State and National Associa- tions of student councils. Each-year the club sends 5 representatives to a meeting of student councils held in the spring and 5 representatives to another held in the fall. Some of the student council's activities this year included an all-school dance held December 3, active support of the Letterman's Carnival, a Dad's Day on November 10, and a Mother's Day program held in May. They also planned many of the sock hops held after the games. I. .. Q 'iw' rf 'sie fi uv e 1 he this HOWARD SEATON, JAMES PRETTYMAN, INEZ NELSON President Vice President Secretary 63444 of 5 When our hesitant footsteps first entered the halls of Wood- burn High, our accomplishments were insignificant. As Fresh- men we began our activities by entering a Dart Throw booth in the Lettermen Carnival. ln the Spring, we elected Mattie Sue Clark and Nina Rice as our May Day princesses. In our sophomore year our footsteps were more sure. In ad- dition to our DartThrow , we sponsored a skate at Oaks Park. Barbara Bauman and Nina Rice were May Day princesses. As Juniors we put on a spine-tingling play entitled, Fog Island . The theme of our prom, in honor of the seniors of '54, was Tropical Moon . May Day princesses were Karol Kay Rohde and Delene Seely. In our Senior year we assumed responsibilities as leaders in all clubs and activities. Thirteen members of om' class were initiated into National Honor Society. We supported Dad's Day, Fall Formal, New Year's Eve Party and Mother's Day. As the year progressed we produced another play, page 29, and to see our May Day Queen and princesses, please turn to page 30. Our achievements have been many and varied. We will for- ever take with us happy memories of friends with whom we went to dances, parties, games and classes. In the course of four years we hope we have acquired know- ledge that will show value in later years. Our footsteps are not quite as hesitant. May we leave Woodhum High with our feet on the ground hut headed toward a successful and happy future. GLENDA SEELY, JANICE JUVE, LESTER E. KELLER Treasurer S. C. Rep.
