fgnlh' -aw URW Derlicatian This year YVoodberry Forest is losing one of its most colorful faculty members. Mr. Ellis Tucker, after forty-four years of teaching, is retiring. Mr. Tucker, a graduate of YVoodberry Forest and the University of Virginia, began his career as a teacher in 1916 at Virginia Episcopal School when that institution first opened. In 1918 he served in the army during WVorld WVar I. In 1921 he left V. E. S. for St. johns University in Shanghai, China, with which institution he was connected until 1943, serving for a number of years as president. During this time he also rendered distinguished service in the field of foreign missions. In 1943 he was imprisoned in a concentration camp by the Iapanese for almost a year. Returning to the United States in 194-1, he came to XVoodberry Forest to teach. In 1953 he was appointed Head of the Department of Mathematics. Mr. Tucker will be greatly missed at NVoodberry. He has been an excellent teacher. a wise mentor, and an understanding friendg and, who can ever forget his fascinating tales of life in Shanghai. or his stirring chapel talks in which his uncompromising standards of right and wrong were always delivered straight from the shoulder? The staff of the 1960 Fir Tree, therefore, considers it an honor to dedicate this volume to Mr. Ellis Nimmo Tucker-mathematician extraordinary. militant Chris- tian. and Virginia gentleman.
