edication 0F THE many people who have played an important part in the history of the school, the lady and gentleman pictured on the opposite page are two of the most beloved. Since 1909, Mr. and Mrs. Rawleigh Taylor, affectionately known as Mr. and Mrs. T., have been closely associated with life at Woodberry Forest in many phases. For thirty-eight years Mr. Taylor was head of the department of Latin, and for almost as many years was the school disciplinarian. Mrs. Taylor, long regarded as their second mother by Woodberry boys, became, in a sense, oflicially so when she was appointed Secretary of the Alumni Association in 1929. The work which she has done in that capacity has long since become history. Mr. Taylor retired from active teaching in 1947, but his retirement was one in name only, since he has continued to play an important role in school life. At once he became Assistant Secretary of the Alumni Association. Together, he and Mrs. Taylor have built up a spirit of loyalty among the Alumni equalled by few schools in the World and surpassed by none. Mr. Taylor also directs the activities of the Cum Laude Society, of which he is president. In addition to these duties, he keeps in close touch with his beloved subject, Latin, giving valuable help and advice to the present Latin department, and even teaching classes when a substitute is needed. This year a new dormitory was named in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Taylor-Taylor Hall, pictured on the end pages of this volume. Not to be outdone in paying tribute to this wonderful couple, the Staff of the F IR TREE has decided to make this Taylor year at YVoodberry Forest, and to that end is dedicating this, the forty-sixth volume, to Mr. and Mrs. T. with gratitude and love.
