This page sponsored by CARTER'S GROCERY SENIOR CLASS HISTORY The end of the trail has come for the Seniors of 1956. It seems almost impossible that in a few short years, this day will seem as remote as that first day, twelve years ago, when 24 pupils entered the first grade. Mrs. Mecham was our teacher. She had to leave at the end of the first semester and Mrs. Earle Brittin taught us the rest of the year. Mrs. Naab was our teacher in the second grade. We gained another student--Deanna Del- lert, that year. In the third grade we learned the fundamentals of writing from Miss Kerwin. Glenn, Clair and Maxine joined us that year. We are sure the school’s ruler expense was high that term, Mrs. Smith taught us in the fourth grade and Marvin, and Lynne joined us. The operetta that year was “The Early Bird Gets the Worm.” We learned long division and multiplication, if nothing else, that year. In the fifth grade we found a new teacher and moved to the basement. Mrs. Connor was our teacher and Donna and Amanda came. The two hardest subjects that year were History and Arithmetic. It was the first year that the boys had athletics and the girls had sewing. The operetta was “It Happened In Holland.” Mrs. Conyers was our teacher in the sixth grade and Lynne and Glenn left us. We started Ancient History that year. Tom Wagoner joined the band that year. We had a spring festival under the direction of Mrs. Williams. We entered the seventh grade with some misgivings because of the rumors we had heard about Mrs. Manchester. We soon found out that they were not true. Larry and Kay joined the band that year and Tom changed to a French horn. In the music festival our class represented April and sang April Showers.” Our picnic was in Thesenvitz’s pasture and a game of ball was played. At the beginning of the eighth grade, Deanna moved away. Our teacher was Mrs. Westman. Lewis, Lynne, Maxine, and John joined the band. Our operetta that year was “Red Candles.” Our promotion exercises were held May 21, 1952 and we all graduated from the eighth grade and were ready for High School. On September 6, 1952, with our class more than doubled we entered high school. The freshmen were initiated one night at a pep rally held at the school house. Our class sponsor was Mr. Conzelman. Toward the end of the year Delores joined us. In our sophomore year our sponsor was Mr. Roos and Jim and Dorothy joined us. Harold, Lyle, Bob B., Jim, Harley, Mavis, Maxine, Lynne, Delores and LeeAnn served at the Jr.-Sr. Banquet that year. In our Junior year our sponsor was Mrs. Stevens and the theme for the Banquet was Ori- ental. We attended County Government Day at Grand Island and enjoyed it thoroughly. In our Senior year, Mr. Youngquist was our sponsor. We had the job of choosing our an- nouncements, caps and gowns, and having our pictures taken. We had quite a time on Sneak Day when we went to Omaha. CLASS FLOWER--Red Rose CLASS COLORS--Turquoise and Silver CLASS MOTTO--Not at the top, but still climbing. FOOTBALL — 1955 SEASON The Wood River Eagles, with only three regulars back from last season, found the going rough, as they tied one game while losing seven. The Eagles showed improvement throughout the season, but couldn’t seem to come up with a winning combination. Robert Bohnart, John Hayse, and LeRoy Muller were the only regulars returning from last season. Hayse, a standout in the Eagle line in 1954 had to be shifted to the fullback position. The Eagles averaged only 141 pounds. ST. CECILIA 33 WOOD RIVER 0 In the opening game of the season, played at Hastings, the St. Cecilia Blue Hawks downed the Eagles 33-0. This was the opening game for both schools and was their first gridiron meeting. The Blue-Hawks were in complete command throughout the game. John Hayse, 162-pound fullback, was the Eagles top performer. CLARKS 14 WOOD RIVER 12 Clarks downed the Eagles in the second game of the season in a game played at Clarks. Penalties hurt the Eagles throughout the game. Wood River exploded for two touchdowns in the last quarter, one on a 95-yard punt return by Lanny McLey, which was the longest runback of a punt in Nebraska High School Football for the 1955 season. Bob Bohnart played a good defensive game for the Eagles. FOOTBALL con't. ST. MARYS 46 WOOD RIVER 0 The Eagles were overwhelmed by the Ramblers in a game played at Memorial Stadium in Grand Island. The Rams chalked up 16 first downs to 5 for the Eagles and gained 364 yards for the night to 47 for the Eagles. The Eagles fumbled five times and recovered only one of them. The score at the half was 13 to 0. LOUP CITY 25 WOOD RIVER 0 In the first home game of the season, the Eagles put up a strong defense and held the Red Raiders scoreless the first quarter. Loup City pushed over a touchdown in the 2nd quarter to lead 6-0 at the half. Inability of the Eagle pass receivers to hold on to McLey’s passes hurt the Eagle cause early in the game. The defensive line play of Bob Nelson, Roger Nelson and LeRoy Muller, stood out for the Eagles. GIBBON 18 WOOD RIVER 12 Gibbon punched over a touchdown the first time they had the ball. The Eagle defense stif- fened and held them scoreless the rest of the first half. Gibbon scored twice in the third quarter to take a 18-0 lead going into the 4th quarter. Wood River came to life midway in the 4th quarter and scored two quick touchdowns. McLey passed to Sheen for one touchdown, and Batie picked up a fumble and ran 50 yards for the other marker. Bohnart stood out on offense and defense for the Eagles. WOOD RIVER 14 SHELTON 14 The Eagles and the Bulldots locked horns in a crowd-pleaser, which ended up in a 14-14 deadlock. The Eagles scored early in the first quarter as Dubbs took a pass from McLey and faking a lateral, ran 47 yards for a touchdown. McLey kicked the extra point. Shelton tied the game up at 7-7 in the 2nd quarter. Neither team could score in the 3rd quarter. Early in the 4th quarter, Shelton opened up gaping holes in the Eagle line and marched 65 yards for a touchdown. They made the extra point to take the lead 14-7. This looked like the ball game for Shelton, but after a series of punt exchanges, the Eagles marched 70 yards in four perfectly-executed plays to score. Bohnart punched over from the 10-yard line, and McLey kicked the extra point to tie the game at 14-14. EDGAR 12 WOOD RIVER 6 Wood River looked like a ball club the first four minutes of the game as they ripped the Huskie line to threads in a 55-yard touchdown march, with Hayse scoring. Edgar tied the game up in the 2nd quarter. Two marches of the Eagles were stopped by fumbles in the 3rd quarter. In the last three minutes of the game, Edgar marched 85 yards for a touchdown, aided by some 35 yards in penalties called against the Eagles. It looked like the Eagles were gong to take over on the Edgar 15-yard line on a pass interception, but the referee thought otherwise and called pass interference against the Eagles which started the touchdown march that brought the winning touchdown. BLUE HILL 14 WOOD RIVER 0 The Blue Hill Bobcats defeated the Eagles 14-0 in the last game of the season. After a scoreless first half. Blue Hill punched over a touchdown in each of the last two quarters. Seniors playing their last game for the Eagles included: Lanny McLey, John Hayse, Bob Bohnart, Harold Van Winkle, Wilbur Wrage, Wendell Fairbanks, Bob Nelson, LeRoy Muller, and Tommy Wagoner. BASKETBALL STANDING. Left to Right: Hal Wilson, Bruce Hoye, Roland Fegter, DeWayne McAhren, Roger Bruce, Robert Soto, Charles Ogden, Bruce Batie, Joe Lange, Robert Nelson, Joe Lilley, Gary Liess, Roland Packer. SITTING: Arlin Watson, Student Manager; John Camp, Gary Swanson, Tom Rathman, John Hayse, Jim Jantzi, Lanny McLey, Bob Dubbs, Dale Sheeks, Harold Sheen, Dale Ator, Coach. BASKETBALL 1955-56 The Wood River Eagles, who were stripped by graduation, won only one game in seventeen. Lanny McLey was the only regular reporting and James Jantzi was the only other man with much game experience. The Eagles lacked height and in most of the games the underclassmen played a good share of the time. The Eagles played the toughest schedule in the history of the school. Wood River won its only game over Elm Creek 51-47. McLey and Jantzi led the scoring for the Eagles. The Re- serves fared little better as they won only three games. Seniors graduating include Jantzi, McLey, Hayse and Brotherton.
