New textbooks enliven Social Studies c asses Social Studies Department has taken on a new look this year with a change of department head, new books, and new teachers. Mr. Tom Fihe now heads the Social Studies Department. Up-to-date Government and Economic books keep seniors posted on recent events as well as past. United States and World History books have remained basically the same, but the new appearance adds variety. New teachers in the department give students a chance to learn by new meth- ods. Teachers include Mr. Howard Laut, Mr. Joe Lewis, and Mr. David Pugh. Physical fitness is one item stressed by the Physical Education Departmentg head- ed by Mr. Walter Stalhut. Girls enrolled in Physical Education have a variety of activi- ties during the week. On Monday and Tuesday the girls learn to perform stunts and exercises on the rings, bars, buck, horse, ropes, and mats. Wednesday is set aside for dancing and games among small groups. Thursday and Friday are used as volleyball days. Sponsoring co-recreational volleyball, bowling, and a girls interschool volleyball team are three extra-curricular activities of the department. UPPER-Push ups are an integral part of the boys' Physical Education program in which Ronald Coleman demonstrates proper form. CENTER-Physical Education major Betty Jones demonstrates the hammock hang on the rings while Mary Crossley, freshman demonstrates method of assisting. -mg Barber shop, beauty shop styles hair Full training required by the state licensing board is provided for students interested in Barbering and Beauty Cul- ture Careers. Mr. Tom Davis and Mr. Gordon Owen both certified stylists instruct barbering students in procedures necessary to pass state board exams. Customers fill the fif- teen chair barber shop classroom for hair cuts, razor cuts, shave, and shampoo. Hair style competition in VICA keep the students eager to excel. Mrs. Garnett, instructor, teaches theory and students receive practical experience in classroom.
