REFLECTIONS’! POUILA WOLCOTT Hl(jfl SCHdbl kTwOLCOTT, CONN ECTL( S Kr ■ mdATfD I MR$r kiL£A ( PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Nothing is as empty as lives filled with consuming loneli- ness and gnawing regrets about what might have been. The poetry and songs of centuries echo in many ways the hu- man calamity of unfulfilled hopes and smashed dreams. No such despair characterizes the Class of 1983. Your class, the first to graduate under my principalship, recognized from the beginning that high school is. in a sense, the last stop of your young years, and your exper- iences here seem to overflow with friendship, laughter, and the unforgetably gentle pleasure of familiarity. You have respected each other; you have found and cemented lasting relationships: above all. you have enjoyed yourselves, blending academic seriousness with a light, sensitive social scene. Milton once called time the subtle thief of youth”. Do not let this clockwork larceny destroy your zest; life is too short to tamper with the sweetness of moments well lived! It is already tomorrow. Time, which never stops on its journey, will pass before your eyes, and in only a few moments you will be members of the community looking back on the years you spent at Wolcott High School. When you do, the photos, facts and memories in this book will be your stepping stones to a happy reminiscence. May your memories of Wolcott High School be pleasant ones, and may your futures be filled with happiness. With every wish for a bright tomorrow, Robert F. After consideration of several eligi- ble friends, we are pleased to present this dedi- cation of Aquila 1983 to Mrs. Marie Carroll. May she continue to be as great and influential a friend to others as she has been to all of us. 116 THE CLASS OF 1983 EXTENDS SPECIAL THANKS AND RECOGNITION TO MR MARK ALLAN This yearbook is a collection of photographs of us, the members of the Class Of 1983, beginning with our first year at Wolcott High as freshmen. At that time, many of us first met Mark Allan as he took the photos which introduce and develop this book. His patience and interest in us contin- ued throughout our remaining years, and his fine work has made possible the creation of Aquila 1983. Throughout the past four years, Mark has been our friend as well as our photographer, and we offer him our special thanks. • SPECIAL THANKS £ APPRECIATION • THE CLASS OF I9S3 EXTENDS SPECIAL THANKS AND APPRECIATION TO MR. RUSS JOHNSON We, The Class Of 1983, could never think of leaving without this special note of thanks and appreciation for all that Russ Johnson has done for us in making possible this outstanding year- book. His work with us over the past four years, his special skills in design and photography, his countless hours of work, and his desire to give us the best yearbook in the state are clear- ly in evidence in this book. 117 THE CLASS OF 1983 EXTENDS SPECIAL THANKS AND APPRECIATION TO MR. ADOLPH BIRKENBERGER In the autumn of 1979, we came to Wolcott High as freshmen full of eagerness and anticipation. As we knew little or nothing about the many tradi- tions of the school, it was up to Adolph Birken- berger to break us in and help us get organized. First came the election of our class officers and representatives, and then our first competition in the annual First Lady” contest. Although we didn’t win, we made a fine showing for ourselves, thanks to Mr. Birkenberger’s help, support, and encouragement. 118 • SPECIAL THANKS S APPRECIATION • THE CLASS OF 1983 EXTENDS SPECIAL THANKS AND APPRECIATION TO MR. JOHN BAGIONI By the beginning of sophomore year, we were veterans in the ways of the school. Even before the official start of the contest, we began making preparations for the First Lady” competition. Other events that we will remember include the election of class offi- cers. along with the all-important fund rais- ers. Through all of this. John Bagioni gave us the full measure of his guidance and sup- port, and we thank him for the many hours that he gave in our interest. • SPECIAL THANKS § APPRECIATION • THE CLASS OF 1983 EXTENDS SPECIAL THANKS AND APPRECIATION TO MR. MIKE D1CORPO, MRS. ROSE TESSIER, MRS. SUE JONES Held in May of 1982. near the end of our Junior year, our Junior Prom was a memorable suc- cessful event. That fine evening was the best of many activities which we conducted that year under the direction of Mike DiCorpo, Sue Jones, Rose Tessier. They were great advisors, and we thank them for a great Junior year! THE CLASS OF 1983 EXTENDS SPECIAL THANKS AND APPRECIATION TO MR. FRAN EMBARDO § MRS. MARIE CARROLL From the beginning of our Senior Year in September of 1982, right up until the pre- sent time, Fran Embardo and Marie Carroll have been the driving force behind the Class Of 1983. Without their many hours of devotion to us, our many events would not have been the successes that they were. It is for this reason that we give them our gratitude with this page of special rec- ognition. • ADMINISTRATION, FACULTY, £ STAFF • DR. ROBERT F. CARROLL As the Class Of 1983 finished its junior year, we witnessed a great change in Wolcott High School. Mr. Laurence E. Shapiro, who as Principal had greeted us as freshmen, retired from the principalship, and Dr. Robert F. Carroll, who had served as Assistant Princi- pal for twelve years, succeeded him as Principal. Although he is new to the top administrative post in the high school, Dr. Carroll’s career in Wolcott High School goes back almost to its beginning. In the time that he has been with us. since September of 1961, he has been a classroom teacher of Civics, U.S. History. Contemporary Issues 6 Economics, and has been active as advisor for Freshman Class, Sopho- more Class. Debating Team, Ski Club, Student Coun- cil. Junior Class; and Senior Class. As Class Play Director, Dr. Carroll brought Broadway to Wolcott. We welcome Dr. Carroll to his new position and give him our sincere best wishes. • CONGRATULATIONS $ WELCOME! • MR. THOMAS A. Creative here we come! 171 • 1983 AQUILA STAFF • TO MY FRIENDS AND CLASSMATES: Dear Class Of 1983, It has finally arrived- the day each one of us has looked forward to - our new beginning. Each of us can recall school days in happiness, sadness, and in moments of excitement. From mid-term exams to Guys and Dolls we. the Class Of 1983. have put our hearts and our souls into all of our activities. Now we have earned the privilege of a future for which we have worked and planned. There are dreams and expectations we are so eager to achieve. It is up to us to create our own future: as bright and successful as we wish it to be. Working hard in achieving a goal was never an obstacle to the Class Of 1983. We have proven this time and time again. We must, therefore, remember that no matter how much difficulty may be involved in realizing a dream, we should keep our eyes on the vision of that dream and not on the amount of labor involved. For without a vision the people are lost.” I want to thank my friends and my fellow classmates for letting me serve as President Of The Senior Class. To me it was not a chore but rather an honor and a privilege. I would like to say good luck to all of you in whatever you may do in the future years. Although we part company in the physical sense, we will carry the fond memories of our high school years always in our hearts. God bless the Super Class Of 1983!” Sincerely. We laughed and cried together. You were there when I needed you, and I tried to be there for you, too. We managed to turn the light on things when it was dark between us. I want to say that I’ll always be there if you need me. I’m glad we had times like these. It made me realize what a good friend you are. Doreen Dear Doreen.
