THE JOURNEY AQUILA 1982 Wolcott High School Wolcott, Conn. TO THE CLASS OF 1982 My dear friends: The journey which your yearbook depicts and is its theme now nears a point where new directions, new roads perhaps, are about to be taken. Your four years in high school have, indeed, been a remarkable journey in themselves, for you came to us children and you leave as young adults. Much has happened in between. You came to us in a momentous year in our exciting and proud history, for it was in October of 1978. as the addition and renovation of our house” neared completion, that we were evaluated by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and found worthy of the highest possible form of accreditation which can be given to a high school. That recognition placed us in the top seventeen percent of public secondary schools in New England, truly a great distinction. As freshmen you helped to earn that distinction, and you have continued to be a distinguished class. We have watched as you have grown and become what you are, and we have been proud. You have become more and more a part of a world where swift and often incredible change has become commonplace - where new knowledge is accruing at a rate too fast to take in - where the wonders of modern technology, while improving life in many ways, have threatened to overwhelm us in others - where inflation continues to erode the value of all we own - where energy resources have suddenly, through increased costs and threatened scarcity, become as precious as they should have been all along - where the world is a world in turmoil - where freedom is still only a word to many on this planet - where old values are daily challenged, and where the perils of the modern age confront you at every turn. In the main, it appears that you are keeping your balance, and that is all to the good, for you will have your turn at combatting these ills, for it is you who must safeguard the future for your own generation and for your children. As you now become full-fledged citizens of what Abraham Lincoln called The best hope of earth” remember that each individual can make a difference - that great individuals make great societies and that what you can become is limited only by what you wish to be. As a free citizen of this Heaven-blessed republic, you have, and I hope will cherish increasingly, opportunities for self- development shared by no other people on the globe. I hope you will continue to learn and use what you have learned to help yourselves, your fellow human beings and your world. There is a school of thought which says that we are everyone we have ever known, every place we have ever been, and everything we have ever done. If this is true, and I think it is, we have all given to each other. I know I am richer for having known you, and the school is richer for your having been here. As you depart from us, take with you our affectionate best wishes and our highest hopes that your individual and collective lives will be all you and we would wish. Laurence E. Shapiro Principal 2 THE JOURNEY” SOPHOMORE THRU SENIOR YEAR This is a very special time in our lives. We stand here now, together, the Class of 1982. This moment marks the end of one journey and the beginning of an even greater one. for it is time to take the unknown path which lies ahead. Like travelers on a road, we go forth in confidence and hope, strengthened and reassured by the friends who travel with us. The road has been a long one. We have known the seasons of life, ever-changing. We have known happiness, success, sadness, and failure. We have learned that today's storm is broken by tomorrow's sunshine. We have learned of others, and of ourselves. And we are ready for what lies ahead. SOPHOMORE YEAR •S.'TrJR Beginning with the First Lady Contest, our sopho- more year was one with many events. The highlight of the year was the ordering of class rings. Other events included car washes, flower sales, cookie and stuffed animal sales, and for some of us, Driver Ed! BIOLOGY Biology, a required course for every sophomore, created mixed emotions. The agony of collecting insects and dissecting was more than some squea- mish students could bear. Just when we thought we would be able to breathe again in Biology. Insect collection number two was assigned. The ethyl acetate and the old bugs returned to haunt us. 1982 AQUILA STAFF At the end of our sophomore year, the 1982 Aquila Staff nucleus was established to begin the long, painstaking task of creating this book, full of high school memories to cherish forever. The members are: Michele Harrison and Karen Gibson, co-editors: Kevin Audibert. Lori Cordato, Marty Kane, Beth Lokites. Angela Polletta. Linda Sapio. Hally Henry, Gene Leavitt, Dave Longo, and Deb Tiso. And RJ. was the advisor who kept us working! SOMETHING IN COMMON SOPHOMORES IN SPORTS One of the most important aspects of our high school years is participation in interscholastic athletics. Thanks for all the memories That are yours and mine alone. For they recall so many Special moments I have known. Thanks for all the memories That time can never dim. I never could repay you For the joy I’ve found in them! Mary Dawson Hughes JUNIOR PROM The sunshine of joy and the rain of sorrow have trailed in the past and will come tomorrow. It took a long time to get here, but time will quickly pass. Tonight is our night, in our hearts it will always last. We're searching for something at the end of the road But it's really not that far, it’s deep in our soul. Life is going round in circles; wondering if if there's add end. This is a time of laughter and dreams shared with friends. The journey on the road to tomorrow may be kind of rough But we’ll all make it because we're strong and very tough. As we re searching and striving towards goals that are right. We'll flash back to the memories of Wonderful Tonight . MARIE CARROLL We. the class of 1982, wish to express our thanks to Mrs. Marie Carroll for all the time and effort that she has devoted to us throughout the years. In the Instructional Center, she guided us. as she helped us to overcome our academic problems. As a co- advisor to our senior class, she has displayed great concern for the success of our senior year. Because of her motherly” affection, she made these four years ones which we will treasure forever. • OUR SPECIAL FRIENDS • MRS. SUSAN JONES Our senior class would like to extend a personal thank-you to Mrs. Susan Jones for being a special friend. Although she has been with us for only a short time, Mrs. Jones is full of school spirit. Before becom- ing a Spanish teacher at Wolcott High School, she was a member of the Wolcott Board of Education. She is truly concerned about the welfare of our education and enjoys working with high school students. MR. ROBERT GERACE As a guidance counselor and friend. Mr. Robert Gerace has aided numerous students with his limitless talents. He has unselfishly helped us with our academic and personal problems. Further extending his generosity, he donates his time as a co-advisor to the National Honor Society. Therefore, we, the class of 1982. show our appreciation with this special thanks. • OUR SPECIAL FRIENDS • MRS. GAYLE MARTINO With our sincere appreciation, the senior class par- ticularly thanks Mrs. Gayle Martino for her unselfish devotion. Through the years, she has demonstrated genuine concern for the student body. As a co-advi- sor of the National Honor Society, she has aided in making this organization one of the most active, pros- perous, and prestigious groups of the school and community. TO MY FRIENDS AND CLASSMATES: Dear Class, It is an honor to convey my thoughts and recollections to the class of 1982. To begin I'd like to recall the start of our senior year when thoughts of our future were beginning to open our eyes. We found that our goals were limitless. We developed sound and sturdy ambitions to prove that we. just as books, should not be judged by our covers. Over previous years the faculty and the student body built harmony between themselves by getting to know one another not only on a teacher-student level but also on a friendship basis. Because a trust had been built, both students and teachers found it exciting to exchange ideas and interests. I believe we were the right people chosen for the Journey. A journey is not always as relaxing as riding a cloud. It might be as fierce as riding a tempest. We have a spirit in us that will not tolerate shame and will honor the glory of achieving success. Even after graduation our mission is not completed; we will be living on a two-way street. Yes, we will either glide as someone or crawl as no one. When the opportunity arises, please take the time to glance in a mirror and ask yourself honestly what you are going to do for the rest of your life. It was not a burden for me to help my class; it was an honor. It gave me a fantastic feeling to know that I am leaving with a good name. I leave as one who was willing to give assistance. I respect you. my friends, because we can stand side by side and not let one another fall. We are the elements that make up our class; we depend on one another. This year was definitely the year of the unknown soldiers. All of you stood high, proud, and content, filled with the feeling of satisfaction. This year will be treasured because it was the time when all of us became acquainted with our fellow students. Some of us may stay in touch; others will not. Reminiscing in later years, we will sit back and wish we could return to school. For now. farewell seniors, and conquer the impossible. Sincerely. D'Agostino Superintendent of Schools SUPERINTENDENT’S OFFICE Staff members of the office of the Superintendent of Schools: WOLCOTT HIGH SCHOOL CUSTODIAL STAFF A TIME FOR US TO SAY GOODBYE” The close of school in June is a time of joy mixed with sorrow. We look forward with joy to the summer, but it is also the time when we must say goodbye to friends with whom we've shared the exper- iences of the passing school year. Underclassmen will return in Sep- tember to face the next year of their education, but for us. the members of the Class Of 1982. graduation has a much different meaning; in most cases, we will not meet again for many years, if ever. Among the many who will not be returning to the system this coming autumn are three distinguished gentlemen who have given their best in our behalf. It is with deep regret that we acknowledge the leaving of Mr. Nicholas E. D'Agostino. Mr. Laurence E. Shapiro, and Mr. Warren G. DeSanto. 150 MR. WARREN G. DESANTO SUFERVISER OF BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS - A Most Important Man - Mr. DeSanto began his career in Wolcott as our high school opened its doors in 1958. and he has taken superb care of all of us ever since. Beginning as custodian in the high school, he became head custodian as the building, its needs and the size of the custodial force expanded. When the needs of the rapidly growing school system demanded that a supervisor of buildings and grounds be appointed, his selection for this tremendously important post was a natural . He has served the school system with distinction. A most unique man. Mr. DeSanto has never hesitated to tackle any job. no matter how difficult or complicated or apparently impossible it seemed. With his ability and ingenuity, he has solved many weighty problems involving building and grounds maintenance. He has saved the town scores of thousands of dollars over the years, and kept schools open on many occasions when sudden emergencies arose which threatened their operation. Always concerned for the safety and welfare of everyone in the schools, he has been quick to identify and remove potential problems, and has kept the schools as bright, safe, cheerful and functional as they were meant to be. Mr. DeSanto is retiring this year, but will continue as a part-time consultant to the central office. We all wish him good health, happi- ness. and long life. Every administrator, every teacher, and every student in the school system has reason to be grateful that this man came our way and stayed so long. A FAREWELL TO OUR HOUSE (The following letter was submitted to the Wol- cott Board of Education by Mr. Shapiro on Feb. 18. 1982) Dear Chairman Mango. Members of the Board of Education, and Superintendent D'Agostino: I signify herewith to the Board of Education and Superintendent my intention to retire at the close of the current contract year, thus ending a twenty-eight year association with the Wolcott School System. Since 1954. I have served as an elementary and high school teacher, as teaching assistant principal, supervising assistant principal and principal of Wolcott High School. In the course of those assignments I have been privileged to work with some of the finest people anyone could hope to know, and have made friendships I will cherish to the grave. Having been associated with Wolcott High School since 1955, when it was but a dream in the minds of a commission of townspeople and teachers which I was honored to be asked to join. I have been proud to participate in making that dream come true through the building, growth and development of what has become widely known and highly respected as one of the finest high schools in the area. The townspeople of Wolcott can and should be extremely proud of their high school and their total educational program, which is second to none for a community with such limited financial resources. It is a high school and system with which I have always been proud to be identified. This was especially true during the social upheaval of the seventies when, while all around us was tumult and disorder in public education, this high school operated smoothly and soundly, with good order, excellent discipline and high standards maintained throughout, as it does to this moment. Throughout that disordered decade, which also saw five years of overlapping half-sessions in this school, three years of new construction and renovation of the physical plant and all that that entailed, the school not only ran like a fine watch but also earned a rare ten-year accreditation as an educational institution of the highest quality. I hope I maybe excused for being immodestly proud of all that, and of the cooperation and hard work by both my staff and my students which made it all possible. Our house , as I have called the school, has benefitted beyond calculation from the superb leadership and support given it and me during all those years by a truly distinguished superintendent. I count it one of the great experiences of my life to have been associated with an educational leader of stature unparalleled in this state. I have appreciated tremendously the confidence and support accorded me by Boards of Education during my fourteen and one-half year tenure as chief administrator of this school, as I have also appreciated the help and never-failing cooperation of the central office staff and the office staff of the high school. I will be forever grateful to the members of my staff who have worked so hard over the years to achieve and to provide excellence in the total educational experience of our students, be it in the classroom, in extra-curricular activities, on the playing fields, or in areas far beyond the school. In encouraging excellence in others, they achieved it for themselves. Nor could any words adequately convey my indebtedness for the loyalty and hard work, good counsel and team effort, support and encouragement consistently given me and the school by Assistant Principals Robert F. Carroll and Lawrence J. Zollo. They are superior administrators, professional to their fingertips, and superior human beings. I could not have done it without them. No-one not in my situation can appreciate the intense gratification I have taken from the opportunity to be involved in the education and upbringing of the almost three thousand graduates who have gone through the school and the almost nine hundred young people, many of them the sons and daughters of graduates, presently enrolled. Our graduates have gone on to distinguish themselves and make worthy contributions in the professions, the arts, the trades, business, industry, the home, and in the service of their country. I am especially proud that three of our graduates now sit on the Board of Education, and that still others have joined the faculty of the school system to continue the work. The Town of Wolcott has been better served by the professional staff of the school system than it knows. Such service depends to a large degree on community support of the schools, which in Wolcott has never been lacking. I hope that in the years ahead, as Wolcott joins with the rest of the country in participating in the technological revolution just beginning, the townspeople and especially their representatives on the Board of Education will support to the fullest the efforts of my successor and of the professional staff in providing the best possible education for the students of the town, who are our legacy to the future. As this highest of endeavors proceeds. I hope too that in the providence of God all will continue to be well in our house''. Yours most sincerely. 151 Laurence E. Shapiro Principal LAURENCE E. SHAPIRO A GIANT” AMONG EDUCATORS in the fall of 1954, Laurence E. Shaprio joined the faculty of Frisbie School, and spent the follow- ing three years there as a classroom teacher in grades 7 and 8. In 1955, he became an active member of the committee which was working to establish the town's first high school. They suc- ceeded, and when Wolcott High School finally opened in 1958, Mr. Shapiro was among its first teachers, specializing in earth science, general sci- ence, and mathematics. His reputation as a first- rate instructor was quickly established. As teach- ing assistant principal from I960 to 1962, he con- tributed greatly to the development of this instuti- tion. It was during this time that he served as the founding sponsor for the Bronson Alcott Chapter of the National Honor Society. Since becoming principal in 1968. he has devoted himself to the constant improvement and expansion of our ho- use”. In addition to his many duties as principal, he has maintained active membership and partici- pation in local, state, and national education asso- ciations. serving with distinction in many offices of leadership in those organizations. With the closing of the graduation ceremony in June, a four-year journey will end for us, the members of the Class of 1982. It is with regret and a sense of sadness that we acknowledge not only our own departure but also that of Mr. Shapiro, whose long and distinguished association with this school will reach its conclusion at the end of August. It is difficult for us to imagine that he will not be present to greet the returning students and teachers when school opens in September. We can remember how he welcomed us, as freshmen, to Wolcott High, and how his respect for us and his confi- dence in us made us feel that we were truly young adults about to enter and undertake a most important phase of our lives. He cared for us. and about us. and he taught us well. He made us feel like we were members of a large family, and we learned that if we cared for each other in our house”, then we would surely be taken care of in return. For each of us to someday be able to pass on to others the many lessons that he has given to us will be our greatest and most lasting tribute. We, the Class Of 1982. wish Mr. Shapiro happiness, longevity, and the good life. NICHOLAS E. D'AGOSTINO, MASTER BUILDER As our class graduates. Wolcott High School and the Wolcott School System record with infinite sadness and deepest regret the retirement of Superintendent Nicholas E. D'Agostino, who now prepares to leave after almost twenty-five years of service to Wolcott. When he came to Wolcott, in 1958 as its first principal. Mr. D”. as he has become affectionately known to two generations of Wolcott students, found Wolcott High School still under construction. Working with a staff of six teachers in temporary quarters in Frisbie School. Mr. D'Agostino organized the high school and did the thousand-and-one things necessary to see that the school opened and functioned as a first-class educational institution from its first day. He gave it the firm foundation and philosophy - The enterprise is people - which endure to this day. On September 15. 1958. with the school building still unfinished. Mr. D”. the staff and the first class of 135 students, moved into eight rooms on the second floor and began what he called their adventure in education . Under his leadership the school continued to take shape around its faculty and student body, and Mr. D began what was to be a quarter-century of building — building program, facilities, physical plant, faculty, and. most of all. young men and women who upon graduation would be as well-prepared to face the future, and in their turn to help to build, as any young people anywhere. During his ten years as principal, the school grew steadily - in faculty, student body, program and facilities, and our reputation as an out- standing high school was established and enhanced. In 1962. Mr. D'Agostino supervised the first physical addition to the school, which doubled its size, and in 1966 saw his efforts rewarded when the New England Association of Schools and Colleges awarded our school its first ten-year accreditation, the highest praise a school can receive. Mr. D'Agostino became Superintendent of Schools on April I. 1968. He took up his new duties on behalf of the entire school system with the same drive, vigor and dynamic dedication to excellence which he had given to the high school. In the more than fourteen years which followed, he has contin- ued to build program and facilities, putting Wolcott in the forefront in education in Connecticut. In 1977. our school again doubled in size, and programs for all of God’s children , as he always refers to Wolcott's students, continued to increase in scope and diversity to meet the needs of the times and the young people in his charge. Along the way. Mr. D'Agostino has served education and his community and state in many ways, rising to the highest leadership positions in educa- tion. Most notable among these was the presidency of the Connecticut Asso- ciation of School Administrators. 1978-80. In 1980. Mr. D'Agostino was awarded the coveted Citation of the Connecti- cut Association of Secondary Schools in recognition of ourstanding leader- ship. exemplary commitment and extraordinary contributions to the Connecti- cut Association of Secondary Schools and to education in Connecticut. In his thirty-four years in public education. Mr. D has made hundreds of professional and personal friends. He has earned the respect and esteem of his colleagues and peers for his calm, judicious and statesmanlike judgment, for his never-slacking commitment to excellence by all involved in both the teaching and learning process, for his unflagging integrity which never gave in to the pressure of temptation of the moment, for his farsightedness, for his humane empathy and sympathy for the human condition, and for immense courage and perseverance in the face of adversity. In his conduct of his office, no detail was too small and no concept too large to merit his attention and best effort. He has always led by example, a taskmaster who helped everyone to do the job. First among his equals, he has ever remained faithful to his task, and has achieved in his own career that same excellence which he has always encour- aged in others. Each life touches many lives. In his years as a teacher, as a leader of teachers, and as a leader of leaders, he has touched thousands, and made their lives better. We will not see his like again. As he leaves us. he takes with him the love, affection and boundless respect of all - students, faculty, and administrators alike - and the sincerest wish that for him. personally, the years ahead will continue to be as rewarding as have his efforts for Wolcott High School, the Wolcott School System, and the Town of Wolcott. If you seek his monument, look about you. • SENIOR YEAR • MEMORIES Come walk with me down memory lane, And for a little while We ll linger in the sunshine Of friendship’s happy smile. With their expertness and assistance, the job of creating this yearbook became easier. Because they are such special people, they are more than photogra- phers-they are our friends. Thank you very much. You will not be forgotten!!! 1982 AQUILA STAFF TO THE STAFF OF 'AQUILA 1982 : Dear friends, members of the 1982 Aquila staff: Graduation always leaves me with a sense of sadness because it is a time when old friends must come to the parting of the ways. For us. the journey together has come to its inevitable end. and each of us must now go forth in new and different directions. We have done good things together, and we will always be bound by fond memories of the many times that we shared in the preparation of this, our finest year- book. Among the good times and the bad. among the quiet interludes and the hectic scramble of deadlines, among the harmony and occa- sional disagreements, there were many lessons. I hope that you. and I. have gained from all of those experiences and that we will all be better people as a result of what we have shared in this brief time together at Wolcott High School. We’ve worked closely for over two years. From the very beginning of our project. I have enjoyed teaching you photography, design, layout, typography, and all of those things which were not only necessary for creating the yearbook, but which will continue to enhance your lives as the years progress. I hope that you will remember me as a person who cared about you and tried to do those things for you which made the total experience more meaningful. I hope that you will remember me as a person who tried to be fair and honest with you. and who accorded to you a very special degree of trust and respect. You are. and have always been, a great bunch of people! I d like to think that each of you will pause from time to time to remember me. and us. and these special times, and that you'll find an opportunity to keep in touch. Thanks for all of the great memories, and may your lives be filled with everything that is good! Sincerely Russ Johnson CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF I9S2! And he learned too late, when the night slipped down, How close he was to the golden crown. Success is failure turned inside out- The silver tint of the clouds of doubt- And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems afar-.
