My dear friends: As you read this for the first time, the morning of your lives is coming to a close as your high school years now end. In a few short days you will embark on new adventures — some of you to the armed services, some to the world of work, some to further your education in various ways — all of you to the great things life has to offer. Sad to say. you will leave us and each other. It is in Dickens’ immortal words the best of times and the worst of times ”. You came to us children in 1977. arriving here at a great moment in our history as our house” underwent extensive addition and renovation. It was an exciting time, each day an adventure as we were hard put to carry on our daily routine in the face of the many demands of construction. But you did it. and superbly, to your everlasting credit. In your sophomore year you participated in and witnessed our evaluation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, which resulted in our receiving the highest possible form of accreditation, placing Wolcott High school among the top seventeen percent of high schools in New England. This was a very great achievement indeed, in which you can take real pride. As you leave us now young men and women, our country and the world are engaged in combating the major problems of our time — steady inflation, the need to conserve energy resources, a world in turmoil, loss of confidence in government, the need to know more and more, an ever-increasingly computerized society, shifting values, and more. To all of these things you will be forced to address yourselves as citizens, in order to assure the future for your generation and those to follow. The Republic summons you to your duty, and to avail yourselves of the opportunities which await you as free citizens of the greatest country on this planet. I hope we have done a good job for you. and I also hope you recognize the the opportunities for further self-development are endless and available everywhere. Be the best you can be. so that, as Abraham Lincoln once said, by the best cultivation of the physical world beneath and around us and the intellecutal and moral world within us. we shall secure an individual, social and political prosperity and happiness whose course shall be onward and upward, and which, while the earth endures, shall not pass away. Wherever you go. and whatever you do. know that you take with you our best wishes, our high hopes and great expectations. I hope you will return to see us as time and circumstance allow. In the interval between, and for always, carry with you my personal hope that the Almighty will protect and guide you and give you happy and rewarding lives. Affectionately.
