This coming June we will be losing one of Wolcott High School’s beloved teachers. Mr. Delaney will be leaving us after many years of service. Mr. Delaney was a truly understanding teacher — a teacher who would stop at nothing to help one of his students. He could fascinate his students with stories of the colorful history of the Romans or dazzle them with the mysteries of France or even stupify them with the ancient Greek language. His sense of humor and quick wit added to our enjoyment of his classes. We deeply regret losing such a superb teacher. Board of Education members from left to right standing are: James A. Donna Della Bella JUNIOR PROM On a clear and warm Friday evening, May 20, 1977, our Junior prom was held. A crowd of about 95 couples attended the event at the Holiday Seasons Restaurant. As everyone arrived, smiles of anticipation were prominent. Throughout dinner, we had entertainment by John Serrie, and Charisma provided the music for the dancing which continued for the rest of the evening. The theme for our Junior Prom was the Earth, Wind, and Fire song, “Reasons . Each couple waited for this song and began to dance when the first chords were played. The evening was a success for everyone who attended. Mr. Johnson, Mr. Bunker, Laine Sheldon, the prom chairman, and Sophie Heidkamp, our Jr. class president, all deserve special thanks for all of their work. 78 787878 787878787878787878 787878 787878 78787 SENIOR R 4LLY On the morning of our senior class elections, we held the annual senior class rally. Each party, along with its faithful supporters drove from Pik-Kwick to the high school in cars decorated with streamers and signs. Horn blaring, each car drove around the school, hoping to gain the attention of an undecided senior vote. This year, along with the cars and trucks, one party used a fire engine to get its point across. The three parties, S.T.O.P, S.L.Y, and S.A.I.L. shouted their slogans and campaign promises to the crowd. Some dressed in sailor suits, others in top hats, while still others came in their everyday clothes. But all had the election spirit. Once the votes were counted, we learned that we had a three-way tie for the presidency. A second election was held, and the tension continued until we finally learned that Alex Pearson had become our senior class president. 7ft 19.19,19.7Q7ft7ft7ft7ft7ft7ft7ft7ft 7Q7Q7Q 7Q7Q7 7Q7Q71 SPORTS dWdRDS On December 12, 1977, the annual Sports Awards Night was held. On this night, members of the various athletic teams were honored for their performance during the fall season. The teams honored were the football, soccer, field hockey and cross country teams. The coaches gave out awards for the Most Valuable Player, the best defensive player, the best offensive player and certificates for participation. Many athletes received varsity letters for their performance on a varsity team. These athletes are a symbol of the spirit and good sportsmanship that Wolcott High has always demonstrated. We hope that they will continue on in this same manner. FIRST LdDY On September 29, 1977, the annual First Lady Dance was held. Each year, the National Honor Society sponsors this event. Each class collects money towards votes for its own First Lady, to be crowned on the night of the dance. This year, our Senior Class Lady was Karen Hanlon. Throughout the evening, everyone danced to the music, which was provided by Sextant. The new gym was decorated to the theme of “Opening Night”. Huge rolls of foil film were placed around the gym, with searchlights to complete the picture. The dance was the culmination of two weeks of money making events, including buying dates, paying to get Terri Ciriello spanked, and raising money to throw a pie in the face of Mr. Connor. And it was all to raise money for our First Lady, Karen Kanlon, to be crowned. 78 787878 787878787878787878787878 78787878787? HONOR 0-10-70-70 -7Q 7Q 7Q 7Q 7Q 7Q 7Q 7Q 7Q 7Q7Q7Q 707070 7Q7Q7C SOCIETY Each year, the National Honor Society gives a Christmas party for young children at one of the elementary schools. This year, the pre- primary school children at Frisbie School were the recipients of this yearly service. The activities were numerous. The children payed musical chairs, watched a skit called “The Night Before Christmas”, sang traditional Christmas carols and ate candy and cookies. Finally, the moment that everyone was wait- ing for arrived. Santa Claus came! Santa Claus, who had a vague resemblance to Carl'Mueller, had gifts for each child, and he listened to their requests for games and toys. Soon the day came to a close, and the mem- bers of the Society went home aching, but hap- py to have been a part of the day’s activities. It was a day which brought many memories for everyone who participated. I7Q 7Q7Q7Q 10 0 0- OlCnO-I01Q-IQ 707070 -707070 TQ-70 7tl HrtLLOWGGN Halloween is a special day for the seniors of Wolcott High. Each senior came dressed in costume to suit the occasion. This tradition, started in 1974, is one which we looked forward to during our previous years in the school. The costumes ranged from wacky to hysterical. There were martians, robots, vampires, chocolate bars, computers, bumble bees and gypsies. Each senior was judged on his costume for various titles. Some of the most sought after awards were for the funniest costume, the most imaginative costume and the best dressed couple. Throughout the day, we saw these various beings stalking the halls. Laughter was heard and screeches of delight were prevalent. Cameras clicked to help keep the memories of that day. Every senior will remember his costume, and the problems he happily endured throughout the day. VICTORY DNTCX On November 28, 1977, the Varsity Club held its annual Victory Dance. On the evening after the Thanksgiving Day game, the Varsity Club provided music and food as a background for the election of the Victory Dance Queen. Throughout the night, the couples danced to the music of Stallion”. Each person who attended voted for the girl of his choice from the six contenders. Each girl had been chosen by the members of a fall sport team to vie for the title of the Victory Queen. The six girls, Claire Benson, Jean Lozier, Judy Brouillette, Karen Dauphinais, Diane Scholan and Sachiko Yamasaki, were the main attraction, both at the dance and in the parade before the football game. Finally, as the evening drew to a close, the votes were counted, and the Victory Queen for 1978 was Judy Brouillette. BLOODMOBIK The Red Cross Bloodmobile came to Wolcott High School on November 29, 1977. Throughout the day, students, faculty and residents of the town filed into the gym to donate blood to the Red Cross. Many who came were first time donors, and their anxiety about giving blood was evident. But the nurses and aides of the Red Cross were extremely reassuring. They provided doughnuts, coffee, and a helpful arm to everyone. Each of the donors left a little weaker, but very happy to have helped the Red Cross. At the end of the day, the final total came to 75 pints of blood donated. We were all proud to have helped the Red Cross when they came. 7Q7Q7Q7Q7Q7Q7Q7Q7Q7Q7Q7Q7«7Q7Q7ft7ft7ft7ft7R7ft7 CHRISTIES COTILLION December 30, 1977 was the night of our senior Christmas Cotillion. Seventy couples came to the Embassy Room to celebrate the Christmas vacation with food and dancing. The two chairpersons, Sandy Jackson and Lisa Longo, had arranged for a fantastic evening for everyone that attended. The band, Body Heat”, provided the music to dance to for almost the entire night. Each couple came prepared to dance and have a great time on the night of their only Cotillion. Each couple was satisfied with both the music and the food. Smiles and laughter were common; we danced until we practically dropped. But everyone enjoyed himself fully, and each couple had their own set of memories to take home at the end of the evening. It was a night we wished would never end. CH-RISTMdS During the week before Christmas, the hallways and stairwells are filled with seasonal activity. Everyone is preparing for the annual door decorating contest. The doors are cleverly decorated with scenes of Santa Claus, Christmas trees, Nativity scenes, and other types of traditional Christmas decorations. Along with this is the annual contest among the four classes for the best-decorated stairwell. The senior class won the competition with a stairwell filled with Christmas trees, teddy bears, and glittering stars. This annual event helps to bring the Christmas spirit to the entire school. With the sight of Santas and presents under trees, everyone begins to hum Christmas carols and think about the vacation which is just around the corner. m 7fi7ft7ft 7ft7ft7ft7ft7ft7ft7Q7Q7Q 7Q7Q7Q 7Q7Q7Q 7Q7Q7P CONCERT The Wolcott High School Band and Mixed Chorus held a joint concert for the Christmas season. On a foggy night, December 14, 1977, the band and chorus came together to celebrate Christmas musically. A few of the selections performed by the concert band were: “Sleigh Ride” by Leroy Anderson, “A Christmas Melody” by Sam Nestico and a flute duet of the traditional Christmas carol, “Greensleeves. The Mixed Chorus sang selections from the “Messiah” along with other Christmas tunes. Near the end of the concert, a surprise visitor made his appearance. Santa Claus came and passed out all types of goodies to the audience. This annual event brings Christmas spirit and joy to all who attend. The music leaves everyone singing and humming for days to come. 78 787878 787878787878787878787878 787878 78787 GhLLGRY Photo by Ed Longo Photo by Donna Tata Photo by Steve Legasse 150 ' I A Shooting Star The sky was clear Stars shining bright The moon so yellow A beautiful night. New Haven Billboard Design - Fran Beleveau Costumes - Brooks Van Horn, New York City Veda Thomas - Consultant The Artful Dodger, Fagin’s brightest pupil, is brought to life by Mark Colangelo. The quick and “artful” movements of the character are most suitable to the personality of the actor. Mark is an agile, quick-moving young man as he moves through the business of a school day. Oliver Twist outstandingly portrayed by Sandra O’Connor is the leading character. Sandy, a novice actress, was a perfect choice for the part. Although Oliver is supposed to be a boy, the character loses nothing in being played by a girl. Sandy's own friendly, yet somewhat timid, personality is much that of Oliver’s. As an excellent touch, Sandy lends a marvelous singing voice to the part. Jeffrey Warner, owner of the workhouse and “owner” of Widow Corney’s heart, is the famous Mr. Bumble. Jeff’s interpretation of the character is very clear-cut. To the part he brings a powerful singing voice and a beautiful speaking voice. Widow Corney, the somewhat overbearing workhouse mother, is portrayed by Sandy Accuosti. This is Sandy’s first appearance in a speaking part. She brings lively sparkle to the character interpretation. Michael Cordeau, plays the part of Olivers grandfather. Mr. Brownlow. This nice old gentleman accidentally finds his grandson. Michael’s own warm personality is most helpful in developing the character. Karen Hanlon, new to the stage, does a spectacular interpretation of Nancy, one of Fagin’s students and a faithful girlfriend to the devious Bill Sikes. Although this is Thomas Jannetty’s first appearance on a stage, his enthusiasm and sincerity is that of a professional actor. He portrays Fagin. an infamous pickpocket who is not so much admired but feared by his students. Tom promises quite a show! Steven Legassy takes the part of Bill Sikes, a mean and ruthless man. Steve is outstanding in his performance. He shows the audience just how tough he can be. Mr. Kenneth Nigro, instructor of instrumental music and music theory at Wolcott High School, conducts the play band of student and professional musicians for the 1978 production of OLIVER. Mr. Nigro most capably blends the experienced and inexperienced musicians into a single unit, pleasant and exciting to hear. Charles Messina, Noah Claypole, presents an interpreta- tion of one of the warmest of Charles Dickens’ characters. Chuck has had no acting experience, but his performance is that of a real professional. Nancy Barstis, stage manager for the production of OLIVER, is one of those unsung heroes of every good show. Nancy is assistant to Mr. Robert F. Carroll, director of the production, and an indispensable part of its success. Mr. Sowerberry is the undertaker and poor hen-pecked husband of Mrs. Sowerberry. The character is most ably played by Ronald Roberts. Ron has had some vocal experience with the chorus at Wolcott High School. Susan Lorusso, Mrs. Sowerberry. drops her own very pleasant, sunny personality, to put on the character of a shrewish, domineering wife. Mr. Robert F. Carroll, director of the Wolcott High School. Class of 1978. production of OLIVER, is also Vice-principal of the high school. This is Mr. Carroll's twelfth production of senior class plays. His vision of the characters, actions and settings of the Dickens work has made this play one of his best. The success of any production, ultimately, must rest on the ability of the director to bring every part into a whole. Miss Maria D’Andrea, choreographer for the production of OLIVER, is also a foreign language instructor at Wolcott High School. Miss D’Andrea actually adapted the Broadway production's choreography for this production. This is no small task in itself. But it becomes increasingly more difficult when one teaches the routines to young people with little or no dancing experience. Mr. Kernie Wessinger devoted many hours to the choral aspect of the OLIVER production. As choral director, Mr. Wessinger developed the singing talents of the entire cast of the play. Mr. Wessinger is the chorus instructor at Wolcott High School. Food, glorious food! We’re anxious to try it. Three banquets a day — our favorite diet. Since there’s nobody near us. who could see us, or could hear us! If I ask you, can I kiss you? One boy. Boy for sale. He’s going cheap — only seven guineas. “Consider yourself at home. Consider yourself one of the family.” “Don’t keep him too warm. Mrs. Bedwin. but be careful that you don’t let him be too cold.” Stage Manager, Nan- cy Barstis, checks costume changes with Denise Parent. Who will buy this wonderful morning? Such a sky you never did see! “Who do you think you are — laying your hands on me? Shame on you. And what are all these people doing here? Stand there, under the picture, boy. Can you keep that expression fora long time, boy, with a crowd watching you? He's got books, Fagin. Look at his togs. Superfine cloth and the heavy swell cut. He's nothing but a gentleman, Fagin! Gary Savage directs John Murphy to set a spotlight as other mem- bers of the crew work. Let him alone? I’m giving the boy a change. Everyone lets him alone except dear old, kind old Noah. “How dare you speak to me like that, you great big lump. Now take this!” Director Robert Carroll reviews sound plot with members of the sound crew. Miss Marie D'Andrea choreographing a number with Dodger and Navy. Strong men tremble when they hear it! They’ve got cause enough to fear it! Nobody mentions my name. Debbie Gancher and Edie Lanosa instruct the makeup committee on how to apply character makeup. What’s wrong with a crop of danger. Mr. Fagin? After all. that’s the only bit of excitement we have around here. And who would deny us that small pleasure? ■ baseball ■wrmw, softball row 1: Joyce Lockert, Pat Neville, Liz Haddad, row 2: June Lockert. Diane Scholan. Dana Hinrichs. Think of the past, and memories flood back, some good, some bad. Thus, to us, our good friend and buddy, Mike Cordeau, someone we all loved and respected, is not past but very much a part of our lives. Mike still lives within us now, and even though he is gone, he is still very much alive in our hearts. His memory shall never be forgotten. Oliver Oliver Our senior class play, Oliver, was a huge success. The long hours of work and rehearsal finally paid off. The audience enjoyed every minute of each of the four performances. Oliver proved to be a credit to the director, Mr. Robert Carroll. For the final time, Mr. Carroll brought together students to form a production of a Broadway musical. Tom Jannetty's antics as the fiesty Fagin brought the audience to its feet every performance. Sandy O'Connor’s delightful por- trayal of young Oliver added warmth. Karen Hanlon and Steve Legasse as Nancy and Bill Sykes brought drama and suspense. Mark Colangelo’s performance added humor to the Thieve's Kitchen. Also adding to the atmosphere were the Undertakers, Mr. and Mrs. Bumble, the Workhouse Boys, Fagin’s Gang and the Londonners. Each actor, stage crew member, artist and musician added his own energy to the work of our great stage manager, Nancy Barstis, to make Oliver a complete success. Fashion Show The card party fashion show was held by the FBLA and FHA members. During the show a penny auction took place in which numerous and lovely gifts were given away to the participating audience. Mrs. Lawson was the hostess for the evening along with Miss Gudegast. All of the girls displayed their tremendous sewing talent throughout the entire show. Jo Ann Perkins Mouse. JoJo ... FBLA Pres.; Eaglet. Going Out. Snowmobiling. L.L., P.C., P.J., N.P.. Clowning. senior prom On June 2, a lovely Saturday night, our senior prom was held at the Agua Turf Club in Southington. The prom chairperson, Cathy Dolan, really did an excellent job. Throughout the meal we were entertained by our former music teacher, Tom Stanchus. He closed with our eighth grade graduation song, Morning Has Broken, by Cat Stevens. The prom theme was also based on a Cat Stevens' song, Changes, which was an appropriate choice for this changing time in our lives. mammmmmsmm honor society induction The annual Honor Society Induction was a great suc- cess. The thirty-three senior members put on a rendi- tion of The Wizard of Oz” for the twelve new senior members and the nineteen junior members. In the play, the characters were looking for leadership, schol- arship, service, and character. After acquiring these qualities, the characters received entrance into the Honor Society. In the second half of the Induction, the new mem- bers were dubbed into the Honor Society by King Hon- or and his knights. Each inductee received a member- ship card and pin and was congratulated by Mr. Sha- piro. Mr. Gerace and Mr. DiChristifaro were chosen as honorary members.
