Text from Pages 1 - 192 of the 1976 volume:

- As the sun rose We saw ourselves Each other Individuals We could also see All that there was To learn Now as the sun sets We can rest Assured Relieved We’ve done our best And took what we could But we learned so much Because we did it Together ................... ( AQUILA 1976 ] OPEN HORIZONS WOLCOTT HIGH SCHOOL I WOLCOTT, CONNECTICUT J Centuries ago, our forefathers came here with a strong determination to look ever forward. And they pushed over mountains and settled on hilltops to keep in their eyes that endless, ever open horizon. Two hundred years ago, in 1776, our ancestors were people who lived in a land of new ideas and open skies. The new dream was freedom and they struggled to attain it — and they did. The years passed by, events mingling — class rings, class meetings, sports, class play. I saw people with the spirit of life I may cause confusion or disappointment. But I am just growing up, testing my strength, questioning, experimenting, to find out my truth. Somewhere in our four years at Wolcott High School, this goal became common to all — to be free to be oneself. This was the basis for our unity as a class, as it was the foundation for our unity as a country. We began to join together as a group, with smiles and tears and reaching out. Beecher 100 Members of The Class of 1976: This moment of your graduation is the best times and the worst of times”, a time of joy and sadness intermingled, for it signifies many things — great things attained, a mountain top reached, friends made, triumphs achieved, honors won — a time of parting, of farewell, of new mountains to climb, new efforts to make, new directions to seek. It is also a time for looking back, briefly. Your four years here have been outstanding ones. From your first days as Freshmen, you established yourselves as a class from whom much could be expected, and in that special way which has been our brightest tradition, you have distin- guished yourselves. Academically, you have excelled, and as young people entering adulthood you have endeared your- selves to all in 'our house’. You have been eyewitness to historic events at home and abroad, events which at one and the same time have shaken and restored our faith in our democratic institutions. Perhaps the greatest thing you have borne witness to is that our Constitution lives, both as a testment to the genius of the founders of our Republic and as a chart and beacon to illumine our way to the future. What an exciting time in which to live! As we celebrate the Bicentennial of this Pleaven-blessed land, we begin the third century of our national life beset by many problems. They will summon from you your best efforts as enlightened citizens. Remember that there is no human problem which cannot be solved. Give your best to your town and to your world, and I am sure it will be good enough. As you leave us, our new addition begins to take form. I hope you will return to see us, not only to see what the new house looks like, but also to renew the ties that bind. Thank you for all the fine things you have done for the school, and for all the warm and pleasant memories you've given me personally. I count it a genuine pleasure to have been associated with you. May God go with you, and keep you safe, and give you happy lives. Proudly and affectionately, X Laurence E. Shapiro Principal 101 ■ wm i JUNIOR PROM Saturday, May 10, 1975 It was a fine May night, and the junior class stepped out in all its finery for a night of music and fun. The Saratoga Room of the Waverly Inn was decorated in flowers and streamers, and the walls were covered with blue paper studded with silver stars. Our theme mural was done in soft blues, with a picture of a road leading to a castle set in the clouds. After dinner, everyone got down to the sound of Sunship We danced, we laughed, we talked, we touched. And for a moment, we ascended the Stairway to Heaven . SENIOR RALLY Tuesday,September 16, 1975 The morning of the rally dawned chilly and gray, but that didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the senior class office hopefuls and their supporters. Everyone rose bright and early to energetically display his support for his candidates. Some of us blasted along with Spirit, others hooted for Hoos, some partied Hardy with Pat, and still others supported the Empire team. The motorcade began with the traditional red fire engine, and included a “tank , assorted trucks, and many brightly decorated cars. The tension in the cafeteria was unbearable as we waited for Mr. Connor to announce the winners. Later, when the cries of congratulations and the tears of disappointment ended, our officers met with Mr. Shapiro to discuss future plans. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY In May, 1975, the newly-elected members of the National Honor Society needed a fund raiser to help finance the banquet they were planning for the outgoing senior members. A carwash and cake sale?” suggested their advisor, Mr. Gerace. Terrific! the members replied. So, on a bright Saturday morning, they descended upon the Banking Center, armed with hoses and laden with cakes. The cakes sold quickly. They washed a few cars, then they washed each other. They washed a few more cars, then they washed Mr. Gerace. CARWASH-BANQUET Traditionally, the junior members of the Honor Society hold a farewell banquet for the outgoing senior members. On Thursday, May 29, 1975, the (then) junior members presented A Night of the Gatsby”, the culmination of weeks of hard work. The cafeteria was transformed into a garden complete with a yellow and white gazebo, which had been built by the male members. The juniors had even procured a yellow 1924 car. The banquet was both a beginning and an end. For the seniors, it was a finish to their successful careers as members. For the juniors, it marked a beginning full of hope for what was yet to come. New officers were installed, and the evening was declared successful by all. The senior class had all the ingredients needed to win the First Lady contest: a pretty representative, Gabi Rominger, and the desire to win. So, all we needed was the money. To raise the funds, we auctioned off girls, bought Mr. Connor spanking rights to Lori Daddona and pitched in enough money to buy the privilege of throwing a pie in Mr. Connor's face. Some say that the latter was the most fun of all! no SENIOR FIRST LADY RALLY FIRST LADY DANCE hursday, September 25, 1975 The entire student body turned out in its finest clothes to honor the First Lady representatives of all four classes. Excitement ran high as the hour of the crowning drew near, but it was no surprise when the winner turned out to be senior Gabi Rominger. Her pretty attendants were Darlene Cosmos, Kathy Boisvert, and Linda Spatafore. The dance was sponsored by the National Honor Society, and the theme was “Harvest”. m FUND RAISERS Magazine Drive Candy Drive Once again the senior class held its annual magazine and candy drives. The proceeds from these fund raising events help finance the Cotillion, prom and caps and gowns for graduation. This year's high salespeople during the magazine drive were Bill Fow, Mark Penhallow, Janet Qubeck, and Mark Rosa. HALLOWEEN “It seems to me a crime that we should age. These fragile times should never slip us by. Times we never can or shall erase, As friends together watch our childhoods fly.'' Varsity VICTORY DANCE Club Friday, November 28, 1975 Thanksgiving merriment had ended, only to be taken up by Varsity Club festivities honoring Wolcott High’s fall sport participants. Kacey Cooney, representing soccer, was crowned ‘‘Victory Queen . Music was provided by Foolish Pleasure. 114 BLOODMOBILE COMES TO WOLCOTT HIGH Wednesday, December 3, 1975 For the second time in Wolcott High’s history, the student council sponsored a visit from the Red Cross bloodmobile. The donors consisted of brave and hardy individuals from both the student body and faculty. The procedure was quite simple and relatively painless, facts which surprised many apprehensive first-time donors. After a donor gave his pint of blood, he was escorted to a table where he could have cookies and coffee. When the day ended, and all the sleeves were rolled down, everyone was pleased that so much life-saving blood was collected with a minimum amount of fainting! 115 CHRISTMAS COTILLION Monday, December 29, 1975 Holiday Seasons Restaurant Music by Mannequin The girls were graceful in their long dresses, and the boys looked strangely at ease in their ties and jackets. This was the social event of the winter season: the Christmas Cotillion. The fine company, fine food, and good music made it truly an evening to remember. REHEARSAL! Auditions had finally ended. Those who had made the cast of this year’s senior class production of “Gypsy could get down to the business at hand: the putting together of a play. The entire cast, director Robert Carroll and choreographor Cynthia Koch worked quite hard to prepare for the play's April performance. “Everything’s coming up roses!” MOST UNFORGETABLE ■ Gabi Rominger Darren Wolter LOUDEST Gail Mori Mike Massimo CLASS GOSSIPS — Tony Yanelli and Debbie Goggins MOST GULLIBLE — Tony Yanelli and Janet Qubeck MOST DEPENDABLE Ralph Napiany Moira Dowling CLASS COMPLAINERS Kevin Thomas Tracey Colby BEST LOOKING Mike LeVasseur Gina Colucci QUIETEST Brian Schmidt Cheryl Kazsas CUTEST Darryl Jones Carol Monnerat CLASS CHATTERBOXES Tony Yanelli Lisa Jones mam jb u'v CLASS MUSICIANS Brett Murphy Terri Welton DID MOST FOR CLASS Darren Wolter Kathy Eagan CLASS PARTIERS Pat Forcucci Dale Delpier CLASS MATCHMAKERS Edie Lanosa Joe Vanderhoff MOST CONSERVATIVE Bob Barolak Sue Guerrera GOD'S GIFT to the OPPOSITE SEX Lori Duval Bob Nelson FRIENDLIEST Gabi Rominger Tim Caswell PHYSIQUE Don DiTota BEST FIGURE Chris Cote CLASS PHILOSOPHERS 5 Reagan Bev Arcaro MOST POLITE Tim Caswell Kacey Cooney CLASS STORYTELLER Sharon Ancheff CLASS CLOWNS — Lori Daddona and Mike Massimo CLASS FLIRTS — Liz Metesky and Brian Morrone WORST TEMPERS Joe Coulson Linda Dunn BEST FRIENDS John Moffo Tony Buonocore HUNGRIEST — Tracey Colby and Brian Morrone CLASS GEARHEADS — Linda Maher and Jerry Deziel SHORTEST Deb Brown Dave Pilloise H TALLEST Tim Caswell Vicki Balko MOST POPULAR Kathy Eagan Darren Wolter CLASS ARTISTS Lori Kloznik Rich Tata BEST DRESSED | | Gina Colucci Joe Coulson ' ?■ .Mi MOST LIKELY to SUCCEED Bob Barolak Moira Dowling ■ MOST SOPHISTICATED Bob Barolak Moira Dowling MOST STUDIOUS mtm : mm v v'y ,yj:- mmmm SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS 126 Sophomore Class Officers are: Pres., Rick Colby; V.
