WOFFORD COLLEGE SPARTANBURG, SOUTH CAROLINA BOHEMIAN JOHN A. WOMACK, JR. Editor JAMES W. CHANDLEE Business Manager 0 2 WOFFORD COLLEGE llBmY SPARTANBURG, S. C. -29301 Wofford is a world unto itself! At times it is baffling and bewildering: gorged with symbolism, dust-covered volumes, and hypotheses. It is also a world of precision which offers micrometers, calibrated scales, and logarithms. Snow falls and brings the world into sharp focus with brazenly contrasting colors and patterns. Rains descend and that which was formally crystalized is lost in ooze and muck. So the student and the faculty must distinguish between that which is true and has value and that which is biased, prejudiced, and false. But that which is fact this year may change the next. This is Wofford 1966! 4 V 3 TABLE OF PROLOGUE FEATURES ACADEMICS CLASSES PAGES 1-21 PAGES 22-45 PAGES 46-69 PAGES 70-129 Introduction . . . Dedication . . . Rat season . . . Rush . . . THE 1966 BOHEMIAN HONORS WILLIAM RAYMOND BOURNE Time is a trivial entit y. It possesses no emotion nor has it any respect for men, their accomplish- ments, or their personaHties. Man strikes back and seeks to preserve his identity and individu- ality by associating himself with certain ideals, principles or institutions. With a combined total of one hundred and fifty- three years of service to the Wofford Com- munity, Professors William Raymond Bourne, Charles FrankHn Nesbitt, Clarence Clifford Norton, and Raymond Agnew Patterson have defeated the neutrality of time at this college. They have given of themselves to others and have taught, directed, and inspired generations of stu- dents. They retire this year having truly earned the veneration and respect given them by the students, faculty and administration. For their long and consecrated service to Wofford College, the 1966 Bohemian is grate- fully dedicated to these gentlemen. CHARLES FRANKLIN NESBITT V A RAYMOND AGNEW PATTERSON 7 Start here please. Why? What direction do we take? Underneath the bluflE of cahn- ness we sought guidance and security from strange but smiling faces. There were clumsy goodbys. The buss on the check, the groping handclasp, and then, we were alone. There was not time to sulk as we were immediately introduced into the worlds of orientation, field day, and mixers. We emerged convinced of the strength of ourselves and of our class. The first barriers and tests had been taken in stride. Others remained which would di- vide and discriminate among us. Never again would the mass unity we felt in the first week be our security. New groups and new experiences lay ahead. Segregation? White ' s chorus. 9 Smokers, the rush dance, and football games were for the freshmen a time of excitement and euphoria. To all, the social whirl offered a welcome and time-consum- ing excuse to lay aside books and cares. The release of pent-up tension and anxiety over tests is best done at a smoky, sweaty, and stuffy dance where inhibitions are shoved into the background. Pledge day was a satisfying day for old brothers and new neophytes. Friendships began which would last a lifetime. We swealtered in our Fall clothes at the Homecoming football game which was played in summer-like heat. Content with ourselves, we absorbed the pounding rhythms of the bands at the dance that Well, we tried. The Military Ball was con- ducted in a relaxed atmos- phere free from the usual drudgery of the Army. Wofford was privileged to be represented on the national television program, The G. E. College Bowl. Unfortunately, our southern hospitality was too gracious. Army Propaganda! 13 WOFFORD COLLEGE LIBRARY SPARTANBURG, S. C. 29301 At first, the year appeared to drag as WofFord labored under the warmth of a lingering summer. Suddenly, we were caught in a swirl of motion. The field house reverberated with our cheers during the fury of basketball games. The Winter Ball seemed to blend into the Christmas season. In the last chapel before Christ- mas, Professor C. C. Norton again treated the WofFord community to his annual ren- dition of the miserliness of Scrooge and the cheerfulness of Tiny Tim from Dicken ' s A Christmas Carole. Humbug ! ! ! Perhaps the strongest student tradition at WoflFord is the avoidance of work. Bat- man, U.N.C.L.E., and I Spy made inces- sant demands on our time between trips to our mailboxes. The ho-ho-ho man came to Wofford to entertain underprivileged children at the S.G.A. Christmas party. It was a party which satisfied more than the body. It revitalized those qualities of giv- ing to others which we often let drift. Leaping ashtrays! Who ' s that guy in the chimney? 17 3 A m ' 18 Second semester brings a variety of ex- periences beyond the actual hectic regis- tration. Our ranks have been thinned. Not all of us are capable of college work, a bitter reality for many. Those that have survived the pressures, deadlines, and exams complain and grumble and, hke Sisphus, take up the burden of another semester. To seniors, it is the final nota- tions on a permanent record sheet, the taking of the GRE, and the moving of a name to the alumni files. It is the final hurdle in a four year race. The solitude of semester break. Dont you wish you had it? Apollo. Second semester is a staccato of action. There are spring weekends where the beaches and mountains attract us and Hghten our pockets. On track and field days athlete ' s sweat forms quickly under the strain of competition. There is spring vacation and the cult of sun worship. There is Greek Week where an exchange of ideas, problems, and solutions flow among individual fraternities and the ad- ministration The week of discussions and lectures is climaxed at the Saturday night dance where we jammed ourselves into the confines of the Armory for an evening of frolic. The apogee of second semester is graduation. It is an end and a beginning within itself. The final page of a man ' s pro- logue is written. The first chapter lies ahead. A well-earned honor. RAT SEASON Rat season is more than overbearing upper- classmen having shoes to be shined and beds to be made. It is a time to test one ' s mettle and the time to test a tradition. Meeting and making new friends remains as the central purpose of this phase of orientation; however, another impor- tance of this period is its value as an integrating force between the freshman and the traditions underlying the twin towers. Hopefully, Rat Sea- son will continue as a light-hearted yet firm wel- come to Wofford. ' Now, for the last time, rat Wofford Gentlemen? Futility! Wonder where I left that Batphone? RUSH Hearty handshakes, warm smiles, smorgasbord, and punch being rush. As eager eyes pour over scrapbooks, censorous eyes begin to ponder. Friends are made for life; the pat on the back leads to a secret grip and the aceptance of a responsibility. Rush is much more than aching feet, smoky rooms, slick talk, and hoarse voices. It is the mature judg- ment of boys becoming men. HOMECOMING QUEEN The Homecoming Queen represents the beauty, pageantry, and spirit of this WofiFord tradition. Sponsored by Bill Howell, SAE, Miss Shirley McPhaul is crowned with such glory. Miss Mc- Phaul, along with the exciting and static moments of the 1966 Homecoming will remains as cher- ished memories. MISS SHIRLEY McPHAUL Homecoming Queen, 1966 29 HOMECOMING Wofford College ' s 1966 Homecoming began with the talented Womenfolk in concert. Their vocal blend of seriousness and satire gave way to Saturday afternoon ' s defeat at the hands of Catawba. Saturday night Wofford came out of its slump under the influence of the Dixie Cups and Inez and Charlie Foxxe ' s ninety-proof show. Sunday was for two Alka Seltzer tablets, the mountains, the parking lot picnic, or just good- bye. It was another homecoming gone but not forgotten. Evasive Whitaker again makes the big play! The Queen and her court The climax of anxious moments spent waiting! Well, who ' s going to say grace? . . . and this one s called the push-pull! ' s HOMECOMING . . . and this is house number four. Their ideas all went up in smoke. The Mockingbird without its feathers. 31 MILITARY BALL Military discipline yielded to paper cups and music but lent enough dignity to make the 1966 Military Ball a success. Formal military dress contrasted with the informahty of the party, and the appeal of the decorations were second only to the beautiful sponsors. Hang on . . . Sloopy! Hurry up! Five more minutes and I turn into a Converse Lady. Bang! Bang! 32 WINTER BALL Seen through rosy-colored glasses and the un- usual warmth of a December night, the popular show of the fabulous Tams lent the Wofford stu- dent body one of its finest dances. It served the purpose of unifying Wofford students socially. ' Hey girl, don ' t bother me! ' Another sock-hop The Fabulous Spontanes! 33 Professor Harper suggests ideas to an attentive audience. Miss Donna Emerson, Greek Week ' s Miss Venus 1966, sponsored by Neal Dickert, a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. GREEK WEEK Greek Week at Wofford is a period for rededi- cation of fraternal principles, goals, and spirit. Mr. Richard R. Fletcher, Executive Secretary for the Sigma Nu national fraternity, dehvered a message underlying the Greek Week theme, The Fraternity and Honor. This emphasized to all fraternity men one of the underlying principles of our growth and existence which lies within the framework of the academic community. Greek Week for 1966 climaxed with individual parties Friday night and the Major Lance— Otis Redding show on Saturday night. Honor is the creed underlying every man in his organiza- tion. Steaks for Mr. Fletcher and invited guests. MISS FORREST HEMPHILL Sigma Nu GREEK SWEETHEARTS MISS SAMMIE MOORE Pi Kappa Phi MISS RANDY POLLARD Kappa Sigma 38 I MRS. It is with these qualities, combined with diligence and devotion to duty, that these men work to advance the Wofford dream. MR. EDWARD K. HARDIN Chairman 50 MRS. RUTH R. BRANNON Secretary to the President THE PRESIDENT The almost overpowering tasks of a college president are to raise money and increase aca- demic standards. To over-emphasize one deletes the other; therefore, the middle road must be carefully navigated. In his eight years at Wofford, Dr. Marsh has continually shown himself to be a man of im- mense capabilities in co-ordinating and directing the policies of the College. 51 PHILLIP S. D. Coates. Dr. Boylston Green ' s favorite definition of an educated man was a man that knows something and can talk about it. He himself knew many things, and his verbal charm and eloquence made it a joy to hear him talk. He was the epitome of gentlemanliness, with perfect manners, sophisti- cated ease, and a deep concern for other people. His personal interest in his students made the path through college more pleasant for many of them. As one of them said, One does not soon forget such a man. —Harris Chewning. Professor Green came to Wofford quite late in his life, but I think the years he gave to us were among his happiest ones. Certainly he spent them as he wished to, living in this area among his many friends and helping Wofford students to appreciate a type of southern excellence he both cherished and embodied. —Vincent Miller. 62 FACULTY Fred T. The society has spread through the entire nation and has become one of the most respected organizations of its kind in the world. The Wofford College chapter, Beta of South Carofina, was chartered in 1941 and celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary this year. Election to Phi Beta Kappa is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a person by the College. Election to the society is a recognition of intellectual capacities well-employed in acquiring an education in the liberal arts and sciences. 90 SENIOR ORDER OF GNOMES WHO ' S JIM ANDERSON BILL BATES JOSEPH BORUM PHIL BURRUS CHARLES CASE RHUDE CHERRY BUDDY HAYES BUZZ HENRY JOHN LAND 92 93 JUNIORS DONNIE Mcdonald, President JIM ROUNTREE, Senator BILL SMETHIE, Senator WILLIAM BROWN, Senator JOHN MILLER, Senator A. We have inherited from our noble spiritual founder, Gen. Robert E. Lee, an atmosphere of chivalrous idealism. We are proud of him; we are proud of ourselves. Since the founding in 1865, our philosophy is that decency of character, and an incessant quest for knowledge are the basic goals in life. Man is a social animal, formed to please and enjoy in society. The order recognizes this. Per- haps our triumphs in the social world are un- equaled by any other fraternal organization. The climax of our social accompHshments are reached at our annual Old South Ball, held in Augusta. Mrs. Richard Bridges, wife of Brother Bridges, represented us as K.A. Rose 1965. The new mem- bers of our chapter, pledged earHer this fall, looked forward with anxiety to this glorious oc- casion. This year we have made worthy contributions to the campus life. We are greatly represented in all phases of college athletics. We are represented in Who ' s Who, Blue Key, Circle K, the Pi Gamma Mu, and others. Brother Robinson served as president of the Wofford Student Body. Brother Walker, our capable Number One, served as presi- dent of the IFC. 1965-1966 saw the marriages of Brothers Limehouse and Flower; Brothers Robinson, Howell, and Rountree were pinned. Brothers of the finest quality who have gone before us have laid a strong and worthy founda- tion on which many years of successful brother- hood may rest. We look forward to next year— it will be another excellent group of Southern gentlemen. ' Duhh, Ernie! Kappa Sigma ' s responsi- bility in all areas of campus life was evidenced throughout the year with representatives in stu- dent government, IFC, SCC, as well as college and intramural sports. Following the Alpha Nu tradition we wel- comed another outstanding pledge class, each to be a part of a bright future for Kappa Sigma. The annual Christmas party for underprivi- leged children was a heart-warming success as were all the good times shared by everyone at each event on our social calendar. Sigma Alpha Epsilon— a common denominator for individuals who vary on ideas which range from objectives in life to enjoyment in leisure- gives meaning and effectiveness to men through a brotherhood established on the ideals of the True Gentlemen. These standards not only en- hance its members ' success on campus but also better prepare them for the world soon to be entered. A rugged Rush paid off is the SAE ' s pledged 21 top freshmen; and despite the fa( t that traditional Sunny Dale was unavailable, pledge night was not dampened, to say the least. More pins and pool parties at the Verse again earmarked the E ' s by never missing an oppor- tunity for good-natured fun. Through the expert financial figuring of John, George kept the social ball rolling smoothly, although it might soon change into a spastic super-ball with Big Busi- ness arranging the parties. Fred, with honor and successfulness, led the fraternity in an outstanding first semester. Out- looks are optimistic as Jack takes the gavel, and glassy eyes turn toward the fraternity weekend. Lake Lure and road trips anywhere between the Mississippi and Nassau. To highlight the Senior Banquet, the SAE ' s will present for the first time to the outstanding senior the Bill Newbury plaque in honor of a True Gentleman, who for many years magnificently guided South Carolina Gamma as its alumni advisor. Not only to the recipient, but also to the fraternity as a whole, this award will always have meaningful signifi- cance; for it will remain as a perpetual reminder of the satisfaction gained from life by a man who hved and loved Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Seventh Row: Alexander, Muirhead, Brakefield, Stober. In early action Whittaker drives past the Frederick Hnemen to pick up his downfield blockers, Rusty Simons, Paul Infinger and Ronnie Wilson. Jim Perrow makes a shoe-string tackle on Frederick ' s hard-running fullback who has just eluded several Terriers. Coaches Duane Stober, Jim Brakefield, Gene Alexander, Head Coach Conley Snidow and Bob Muirhead once again directed the Terriers to the best record in the state. The team boasted a new mascot, a cheer-leading Terrier, an exciting Snidow-T offense and a stingy defense. Whittaker, Ellis, Phelps and Wilson made up Wofford ' s flashy backfield, the best in the district. Bill Day- vault, Don Williams, Lamar Westberry, Lanier Phillips and Paul Infinger anchored the offensive and defensive lines. Speed, depth and experience made the Terrier of 1965 tough and the same factors will make the Terriers of 1966 even tougher. Milton Rhodes, Bill Burk, and Jim Jacobs gang up on a Furman pass receiver. Don Williams, No. 70, continues to smother enemy ball carriers in the Homecoming game against Catawba. More of Bill Burk ' s outstanding defensive work stops a Newberry drive. Billy Ellis digs for yardage against a tough Ted Phelps rolls for some of the 140 yards he gained Homecoming day. Warren Whittaker just releases the ball before being hit by a Buccaneer of East Tennessee State University. Phelps skirts left end against East Tennessee for big yardage. Paul Infinger meets a host of Mountaineers from Ap- palachian after completing a pass. 181 BASKETBALL First Row: Ed Cole, Buddy Hayes, Rob Payne, Barry Lentz, Jimmy Littlefield, Tom Leahy. Second Row: Buddy Cubitt, John Hendrix, Neal Meyer, Frank Talley, Willie Pegram, Mac Lemmons, Whit Payne. A blend of experienced veterans and talented freshmen carried the 1965-66 Terriers to another outstanding season. Gene Alexander ' s charges posted a 17-9 won-lost record. Buddy Hayes, Mac Lemmons and Buddy Cubitt closed out brilhant careers at Wofford with Hayes ending up third among all-time Wofford scorers. Next year ' s team will be young and doubtless will count on Jimmy Littlefield, Wilhe Pegram and Barry Lentz to spearhead it to more victories. In spite of prolonged injuries to veteran players, Coach Gene Alexander again led the Terriers to one of the state ' s best records. 182 184 WofFord .... 54 Newberry 51 WofFord .... 65 Erskine 58 Wofford .... 73 Elon 97 Wofford .... 64 E. The big gun for the Terriers will be Richard Miller, who was MVP last year while batting .431. Miller should get plenty of hitting and fielding help from Warren Whittaker, Rusty Hudson and Johnny Hendrix. But several newcomers must prove themselves before the baseball team can come up with the winning formula. Spirited practice games instill good base running habits and lots of hustle. Like Ron McCrady all hurdlers work extra on their form. Form like this helped Mac Lemmons rack up 294 points last year. Graduation losses hit the track team hard, but Coach Bob Muirhead has a good nucleus return- ing in Mac Lemmons. Big Mac set a school record with 294 points last year, winning six first places in one meet. In addition to Mac, this year ' s team will feature Ron McCrady in the hurdles and Tom Walton, Bill Harkey and Jim Jacobs in the middle distance races. How well the new men develop will determine the success of this year ' s squad. Quick 440 ' s are good drill for track men regardless of their event. It ' s hard to imagine anything costing less today, but electric- ity does. In January, 1965, Duke Power made its 16th rate reduction since 1913 — the fifth in less than six years. Now the average cost of a kilowatt hour of electricity to Duke Pow- er ' s residential customers is actually one-third less than 20 years ago. These rate reduc- tions have helped Piedmont Carolinians improve their standard of living through their ever increasing use of low-cost electricity for appliances and heating.
