A Scholar a Gentleman a Friend . . . DR. CHARLES E. CAUTHEN 1897-1964 On December 12, 1964, Wofford College lost one of the most respected members of its faculty in the person of Dr. Charlie Cauthen. The words that bedeck this page embody the reflective thoughts of his closest colleagues, students, and friends. . . . a living example of what a Wofford gentleman shiould be. 1954 BOHEMIAN. Dr. Cauthen exhibited the marks of a great teacher by his intellectual discipline and his sense of communication which carried the idea to the student. His presence demanded respect and students felt they had let him, as well as them- selves down if they did not do a good job. George Dean Johnson, Jr., Class of ' 64. ' He sought the practical solutions, the decent ones. If there were polls for the ' most valuable faculty member, ' he would have been chosen by his associates. Dr. Lewis Jones, Class of ' 38. ' He served ably in positions of great responsibility, but will- ingly in more lowly tasks. He was a scholar, humble before truth; a friend who never presumed on friendship; a lover of goodness and knowledge and wisdom. Rev. Bryan Crenshaw, Class of ' 43. ' When one of his colleagues reflects even briefly on the life and influence of Dr. Charles Edward Cauthen, all of the finest and noblest words he can summon to characterize a man so universally loved and admired and respected rush pell-mell into his mind.
