To: The Class of 1981: The national and international events taking place during your senior year at Woburn High School are certainly historically significant. You have witnessed a United States presidential election resulting from one of the largest popular vote majorities in U.S. history. You are part of an economic see-saw unique to American economic progress and are see¬ ing daily enormous price variations in consumer products and services. The television medium makes international events seem almost a part of regular daily routines. Your lives are caught up in all of these events. For me, the taking, holding, and final release of fifty-two American hostages has rekindled the meaning of freedom, which perhaps we too easily take for granted as American citizens. Psychologists tell us that being deprived of a privilege may help one to respect it all the more when returned. Let us reflect on that great privilege of personal freedom, within the law, that we Americans enjoy; and let us gain from the ordeal of the American hostages, now returned to safety, a better perspective and appreciation of our American freedom. Let us not be timid in expressing our patriotism, to ideals and privi¬ leges we as United States citizens uniquely, among a world of peoples, enjoy, and for which half the world is currently attempting to achieve to even a small degree. Congratulations and best of luck to each graduate. Dr. Charles W. Lamontagne Superintendent of Schools Dr. Charles W. Lamontague Superintendent Paul J. Andrews Assistant Superintendent Bertha Bane Assistant Superintendent I. Edward Marashio Assistant to the Superintendent 22 Robert McArdle Director of Special Education Ellen McCarthy Director of Title 1
