YEA RBOOK MESSA GE Henry D. Blake — Principal To The Members of the Class of 1980: There is a legend told of old: One night in ancient times, three horsemen were riding across a desert. As they crossed the dry bed of a river, out of the darkness a voice cried, “Halt”. They obeyed. The voice then told them to dismount, pick up a handful of pebbles, put the pebbles in their pockets and remount. The voice then said, “You have done as I commanded. Tomor¬ row at sun-up you will be both glad and sorry.” Mystified, the horsemen rode on. When the sun arose, they reached into their pockets and found that a miracle had happened. The pebbles had been transformed into diamonds, rubies, and other precious stones. Then they remem¬ bered the warning. They were both glad and sorry — glad they had taken some and sorry they had not taken more ... And this is the story of Education. On the eve of graduation in June 1980 you are probably both glad and sorry — glad you have taken some, and sorry you have not taken more. May the pebbles of the hard won experiences of your high school career be transformed into the precious stones — health, good for¬ tune, love, and hope — of your future years! Henry D. Blake 21
