To the members of the Class of 1 975: As we enter the last quarter of the twentieth century and observe in 1975 the bi-centennial of the establishment of our country, we find an unprecedented period in our development as a nation. Inflation and recession have affected the lives of each of us, and a stabilized economy is not in sight. This economic malaise, the shock from Watergate, the accelerat¬ ing rate of change in our society have had a profound effect on schools. A new emphasis is being placed on character education and value classification requiring students to make moral judge¬ ments and personal reflections on simple considerations such as justice, honesty, truth, concern for our neighbor, and respect for property. If we are to learn from the moral dilemmas which beset the home, the school, and the nation in the late sixties and early seven¬ ties, we must commit ourselves to a re-examination of our objec¬ tives. Education must include more than the three R’s of reading, writing, and arithmetic. On the eve of graduation in June, 1975, it is our fervent hope that you will enter the mainstream of society, resolved to make a positive contribution to the ethics of our American way in the final quarter of this century. May your future bring each of you the peace of mind that comes from a personal concern for the welfare of your neighbors and other simple, positive moral judgements. James F.
