A rapidly changing society stimulated by ad¬ vances in science demands an edu¬ cational program designed to meet the challenge of change. Education in the sciences must go beyond the immediate and include the future. What is more important, it should provide young people with the background and intellectual tal¬ ents for shaping the future in a manner that assures the welfare of human beings and sustains prog¬ ress. The science curricula at Wob¬ urn High School is dedicated to meeting these challenges through a continuing process of implementa¬ tion of relevant courses and subject matter content; and predicated upon the thesis that ’ science teach¬ ing must result in scientifically li¬ terate citizens.” 27

Mr. Hanung explains the fundamentals of Versatility in Career Preparation data processing. J A Students who aspire to be bookkeepers, stenographers, typists, and accountants are prepared to enter business offices, large and small, and to work at varying kinds of office occupations. The offerings of the Business Education Department appeal to many students whose individual interests and aptitudes greatly vary. However, through many course selections, the Department accommodates each student’s choice. For example, the senior who excels in word power, judgement, and capacity to reason, finds satisfaction in preparing for the roll of a secretary. The student who prefers meeting the public and who possesses a flair for design and display enjoys our co-operative distributive education classes. For the graduate who hopes to operate his own company, or work on the accounts of a business, the discipline of bookkeeping is appealing. Many other students benefit by the preparation provided in skills required of the clerical em¬ ployee. Each graduate of the Business Education Course enters the business world with the background and skills necessary to pursue a successful career. Students Reflect Excellence in Mathematics All students, whether preparing for a business career, college or homemak¬ ing, have one course in common — mathematics. The goal of the Math Depart¬ ment, under the direction of Miss Virginia Hall, is to introduce forms of mathe¬ matics that will be meaningful and useful to students after graduation. Well-trained teachers aware of what’s happening in a rapidly changing field, the latest in textbooks and equipment, and an expanding math library contrib¬ ute to a math department. An active Math Club, and a successful Team show that the students are taking full advantage of the math training. The Math Team has competed with teams from surrounding communities and has won distinc¬ tion in many meets. Several Woburn High students have been awarded top priz¬ es and individual honors, a fine tribute to the excellence of the Department and its instructors. A digital computer for second semester is available in the math lab for stu¬ dents this year. Miss Hee emphasizes a point. 28
