Superintendent Dr. J. Frank Hassett To the Class of 1970: You are the first class to be graduated in this new dec¬ ade of the seventies. Sometimes we feel that when a new decade begins, we have left behind the errors of the past and are given a chance to start anew. The nineteen sixties was indeed a troubled period in the history of our country and of the world. It is deplorable that the problems of war, famine, air and water pollution, slum areas, and many more, that were a part of your early life, are still with us. If they could have been solved you might now go forth upon graduation day into a utopian world where each of you would be free to pursue his individual happiness. However, man always has needed challenge in order to progress. The discovery of fire, the invention of the wheel, the taming and use of electricity, and most recently, the reaching out into space to walk on the moon, were all brought about by man’s basic need for challenge. You are entering a world of challenge. Whatever your native talent may be, you can use it to help in the solution of at least one of these diversified problems. During the next ten years you will have launched upon a career. Hope¬ fully you will have dedicated yourself to the full use of your talents for the betterment of society. We, of an older generation, are proud of you. We have faith in your youth, energy, and intelligence. You will help write the story of the coming decades. May it be a giant step forward in the history of man.” God bless each of you. DR. J. FRANK HASSETT Superintendent of Schools I. Edward Marashio assistant to the superintendent Assistant Superintendent Jerome T. Lynch 20

To the graduating class of 1970: The beginning of a new decade renews the perennial hopes for peace and happiness that rest in the hearts of mankind. Only ten years ago, we looked forward with keen antici¬ pation to the ’Golden Sixties.” Looking back, we see in despair, the events that not even the wisest of prophets could predict — the impressions of disorder, the conflicts of environment and race, and overall the strain of the war in Vietnam. Yet as we look ahead we have hope, for now as a people we are critically examining our goals and our lives, often at the urging of the youth in our society. Never before have we so honestly examined the problems of ecology. A people who solved the incredible feat of reaching and exploring the moon in the sixties, surely should be able to solve the gradual deterioration of our environment on this planet in the seventies. Our hopes lie with you, for you will be the people who will fashion for good or evil, the opportunities that are available as we enter this decade. May the close of the decade of the seventies demonstrate that you have confounded the present prophets of pessi¬ mism. It is a mighty challenge that requires the dedication and optimism of the Class of 1970. HENRY D. BLAKE Principal Principal Henry D. Blake Vice-Principal Lawrence Gilgun reviews the Daily Bulletin. Vice-Principal James Brennan discusses a problem over the phone. 21 y n '
