In your hands, hundreds of students have discovered the wonders and forces of the universe in which we live, an experience which has added immeasurable dimension to our lives. Moreover, your relationship with us has extended beyond the ordinary role of teacher; you have been our counselors, guides, and friends. Unselfishly you have given us much of your free time, not only in the exploration of subject matter but also in the discussion of our futures and in the solving of little problems of daily life. As an expression of our deep gratitude and affection toward you, we dedi¬ cate the 1962 INNITOU to you. Frank Hassett was graduated from the College of the Holy Cross with a Bachelor of Philosophy degree, received his Masters Degree from the University of Massachusetts and studied for his doctorate at Calvin Coolidge College of Liberal Arts. Serving as Superintendent of Woburn Public Schools since 1945, Dr. J. Frank Hassett has long distinguished himself by his active membership in state and national professional educational organizations and by his energetic interest in such civic charities as the Com¬ munity Chest, the United Fund and the March of Dimes. DR. J. FRANK HASSETT Our Principal JT HENRY D. BLAKE Mr. Henry D. Blake, a former graduate of our school, became principal in 1951. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University, he complemented his education with a Masters Degree at Boston College Graduate School, fol¬ lowed by further study at Boston University Graduate School and Harvard University Grad¬ uate School. Mr. Blake, who served as a naval officer in World War II, maintains membership in many educational organizations of a local, state and national nature. In addition, he is an incorporator of the Woburn Five Cent Savings Bank, a Director of the Burbeen Lecture Committee, a Trustee of the Woburn Public Library and a Trustee of the Choate Memorial Hospital. During his years as principal, Mr. Blake has been instrumental in keeping Woburn High School abreast of all current developments in the cons¬ tantly changing field of public education. 8 John P. The Social Studies Department, under the direction of Miss Geraldine A. Soles, provides an understand¬ ing of the road of human history and knowl¬ edge of the workings of our government and the challenges which it faces. World His¬ tory shows the great epic of man’s life on this planet, and gives the general background of history necessary for good citizenship. United States History throws light upon the tremendous development of this youthful republic, and shows the problems which our nation faces as a world leader. The Problems of Democracy course makes students more fully aware that only through individual re¬ sponsibility and participation in government can the tide of Communism be stopped and freedom be spread. Since individual participation is the cor¬ nerstone of democracy, students have be¬ come more fully aware of the workings of our government through the Student Coun¬ cil and the annual class elections. Without this knowledge, study in all other areas is virtually impossible. Our English Department, under the direction of Mr. Paul Murphy, pro¬ vides a thorough treatment of each of the large areas of communication — speaking, listening, reading, and writing. In addition,-ample coverage of all the important elements of grammar, inter¬ related with challenging activities that develop understanding through application, is given. Formal and informal group discussion and spe¬ cial projects, such as panel discussions or debates, present the opportunity for expressing ideas orally and make the student capable of recognizing faulty conclusions and of distinguishing fact from opinion. Competent theme correctors are available who administer counsel when the student deems it necessary. So that a student may read books of all sub¬ jects with as much speed and comprehension as possible, a developmental reading program is in operation for enjoyment as well as for learning. 11 As mathematics touches upon all aspects of our existence, our Mathe¬ matics Department, under the direc¬ tion of Mr. William J. Horrigan, offers many different courses in mathematics in order that all stu¬ dents may obtain as much training in mathematics as is possible. Alge¬ bra and geometry are offered on both college preparatory and general levels. Advanced courses are more theoreti¬ cal in nature, and are necessary for all students planning careers in engi¬ neering or the sciences, and are help¬ ful to those desiring a broad liberal arts preparation, for these courses show beginnings of the great mathe¬ matical patterns upon which the uni¬ verse has been built. Mr. Horrigan explains determinants to Harry. Loguidice (Radio Club Advisor), Mr. Neil Lewis, Mr. Harry Marderosian (Science Club Advisor) Science Man has always probed into the universe in an attempt to understand better both him¬ self and his environment. In Woburn High, students find answers to some of their ques¬ tions concerning the universe and its work¬ ings by means of the courses offered by the Science Department. Although one year’s study in such areas as chemistry, biology, physics, and general science cannot go into great detail and specialization, the under¬ lying and more important aspects of these fields are treated in a manner which makes the world much more understandable to us. The student who wishes more study in the areas of chemistry, physics, or biology has for his use a program of Saturday morning laboratory classes in which more extended study and the development of independent laboratory technique is made possible. Ad¬ ditionally, students are able to do research in great detail upon a specialized topic of interest to them by the preparation of a project for the annual Science Fair. SATURDAY MORNING LAB Seated, left to right, Mrs. Kathleen Nisco, Mr. Ernest Mazzone, Department Head, (French Club Advisor), Miss Geraldine Rucki (French Club Advisor), Standing, left to right, Mr. Jean P. Houde (Classics Club Advisor), Mr. Anthony Feroci (Span¬ ish Club Advisor) Foreign Languages Because of the rapidly increasing need for a working knowledge of foreign languages in both education and the business world, our foreign language department, under the direction of Mr. Ernest Mazzone, has revolutionized its outlook in the brief period of time that he has been associated with the high school foreign language program. The study of elementary Spanish and French, as well as Russian, on Saturday mornings, is devoted entirely to aural- oral (hearing-speaking) comprehension. A simplified laboratory composed of tape recorders and head sets helps the student acquire the necessary pattern and structural drills. As a result of this method, students, when beginning to read and write, glide into foreign lan¬ guages undaunted by vowels of differ¬ ent value and unintimidated by new alphabets. In the field of classical lan¬ guages, the study of Latin offers the student a vital link with the glories of a past civilization and makes even more pleasant and rewarding the study of Spanish, French, English, as well as World History and Biology. La lecon va bien! Seated, left to right, Miss Alice Badger (Innitou Advisor), Miss Doris T. Lynch, Department Head, (Business Ed. Club Advisor, Tanner News Ad¬ visor), Miss Eleanor McCall (Innitou Advisor), Standing, left to right, Mr. I. Edward Marashio, (Faculty Manager of Athletics), Miss Judith Berry (Pep Club Advisor), Mr. Richard Skeffington (Sophomore Class Ad¬ visor, Basketball Coach, Assistant Football Coach), Miss Alice E. Brady This beats addition! This department, under the di¬ rection of Miss Doris T. Lynch, is designed for pupils who plan to be stenographers, bookkeepers or clerks, and also provides prepara¬ tion for the fields of accounting, salesmanship, the administration of small business and the area of civil service. The program provides terminal education for many students and the strategic location of the City of Woburn in relation to industrial Route 128 and the banking and in¬ surance centers of Boston provides numerous opportunities for employ¬ ment. In addition, the Business Educa¬ tion Department provides valuable electives in personal typing and gen¬ eral business for the pupils in all other curricula at Woburn High School. Music Library Art Miss Sheeran is always willing to help. Left to right, Mr. Edson L. Kimball (Director of Senior Play, Band, Orchestra), Miss Helen Sheeran (Librarian, Future Teachers Club Advisor), Mr. Frank Newark (Art, Fine Arts Club Advisor) Mr. Edson L. Kimball, head of the Music Department, is directly responsible for our talented band and orchestra. These groups participate in many school functions and give senior high musicians a chance to dis¬ play their abilities in public. Music appre¬ ciation classes are designed to enrich the students knowledge of the great wealth of music which has come to us down through the centuries. In the Art Department, a course intended to produce a basic understanding of the prin¬ ciples of both two and three dimensional de¬ sign is offered under the guidance of Mr. Frank Newark. Problems basically adaptable to either commercial or fine art techniques are solved, and the history of art is dis¬ cussed. The Harlow Library has a collection of sev¬ eral thousand books, hundreds of periodicals and pamphlets, and a number of filmstrips and recordings. The primary function of the library is to provide resources for students and teachers and to stimulate reading. Each year a Paperback Book Fair is held under the direction of the School Librarian, Miss Helen Sheeran. 16 Home Economics A stitch in time . . . Standing, left to right, Miss Jane Cowhig, Miss Carol Donovan, Seated, Miss Barbara Dunbury (Hi-Teen Fash¬ ion Club Advisor) The Home Economics Department, under the direction of Miss Barbara Dunbury, is now offer¬ ing a course for senior high girls in clothing con¬ struction and wardrobe planning. This class meets five periods per week, two of which are devoted to lectures and three to laboratory work. Per¬ sonal grooming, design, budgeting, consumer in¬ formation are some of the units covered along with actual garm ent construction. In the Shop and Mechanical Drawing Depart¬ ment, courses in woodworking are available for those seniors who desire them. However, the larger part of the program is devoted to the draw¬ ing courses, mechanical and pre-engineering. A beginning treatment in graphic representation is an important part in work training for those who do not plan any further formal education, and is also an important part in the college prepara¬ tion for students planning a study of engineering. i]wr 7 Industrial Arts Mechanical Drawing Mr. Thomas Kilday Mr. Wilfred Walsh All together now, 1 - 2 , 1 - 2 . Physical Walter White Coordinator of Athletics Education All the knowledge in the world is of little use to our students unless they possess strong and healthy bodies. The Physical Education Department offers a pleasant change from mental activity to physical activity. This year, physical fitness examina¬ tions have been administered to all stu¬ dents as a part of the national effort to improve the health of American youth. As a result of this program, the students have approached their exer¬ cises with fresh ambition and purpose. Additionally, physical education classes give students an opportunity to partici¬ pate in team games, and also give in¬ struction in the ways of good health. Left to right, Austin T. ST [Wm THE FLIGHT As fledglings on our first attempted flight, We left our nest in search of higher learning. Embarking on our trip to seek the right, We knew that time would grant us no returning. The molting of our feathers came with time; Each passing day our knowledge did increase. No longer nestlings, we enjoyed the clime, As wings, untried, have been with strength released. Now that our trial-flight days are almost o’er, And parted are the days of erudition. Now on to even greater heights we’ll soar, As we go forth to seek our life’s ambition. 30 ■■ TOMORROW’S NOW TODAY Time has come to part friends As we end the days Filled with books and teachers That have steered our ways. Now the World is calling And to us does say, “Graduates on your way now, For tomorrow’s now today.” Each must try his utmost In his separate way. To give to life a meaning Is the hope we pray. Keep the country growing And let freedom stay, Grad’uates on our way now, For Tomorrow’s now today. Tune: Let Me Call You Sweetheart 31 Seated: Left to right, Anthony Bent, President, Mr. William J. Woburn’s king-sized forward wall, led by Co-captains Nelson and Quinn, proved to be too formidable for any penetration by most Tanner opponents. Tanners Take Aim at Titles At about the same time this book goes to press, Woburn’s veteran-studded baseball team will be eyeing two crowns — the Northeastern Confer¬ ence Pennant and their second consecutive class “B” title. Although Coach McDonough lost sev¬ eral members of last year’s championship team, the picture is brightened considerably by the re¬ turn of three sports star Ed Foley, lost last year because of an arm fracture sustained in spring football practice. As a sophomore, Ed batted over .400, pitched a no-hitter in his varsity start, and played the best first base seen at Woburn High in years. In addition, there are several promising prospects up from Coach Paul Sweeney’s once defeated Junior Varsity nine, namely, pitcher-outfielder Joe Carbone, catcher Buckie Doherty, firstbaseman Eddie Gill, infield¬ er Ray Liddell and outfielders Jim Griffin and Bill McGowan. The nucleus of the team will be returning veterans Tom Carney at second base, Jim Pereira at shortstop and Bill McDonough at third. Out¬ field posts will be filled by Nick Bowers and Jim Donovan, both of whom hit well over .300 last year.
