Greetings and congratulations to each member of the Class of 1961. Your year¬ book is a marked achievement. I con gratulate you and your parents on your completion of four years of educa¬ tional preparation for future endeavors. Many sacrifices have been made by your parents that you might finish this prelim¬ inary training for life’s work. I know how happy and pleased they are on this occa¬ sion. Education is indispensable for those who have the ability and desire to improve them¬ selves. An everlasting faith in God’s Wisdom and a sincere effort to be of good charac¬ ter will definitely -determine the extent of your success in future endeavors. Never hesitate to be honest, upright, and true at all times in all of your activities. You have the imagination and youth to compete in this opportune period of “New Frontiers” as proposed by our President, John F. Kennedy. I urge you to view the years ahead with optimism. It has indeed been a pleasure for me to have played a small part in your educational program and development. I hope that you will continue to consider me a friend who will be ever ready in the future to advise and help you whenever needed. I am very pleased to be afforded this op¬ portunity to have this brief message in your yearbook, and I wish each of you success and happiness in any new undertaking which you may decide to pursue. J. Frank Hassett, Ed. D. Superintendent of Schools 12

The heart of any school is its faculty. Indeed, the success of the individual student depends in large measure upon the caliber of his teachers. In this re¬ gard, we of Woburn High have been most fortunate. To those who have taught us, who have guided us, who have helped to make up what we remem¬ ber as the “golden years”, we offer our heart-felt thanks. 11 o n

Pri W n c i n a ’ e 3 5 u a e HENRY D. BLAKE Graduates of the Class of 1961: In the evening of his life the noted seven¬ teenth-century English poet, John Donne reflected on the significance of his past ex¬ periences: “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of the main . . . any man’s death di¬ minishes me, because I am involved in Man¬ kind ; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.” On the eve of Graduation for the mem¬ bers of the Class of 1961, there is a signif¬ icant lesson for all to learn from this ser¬ mon, not as a discouragement, from a prophet of gloom but rather as a recognition of the virtues and potentials of the least among us. It is a humbling thought to re¬ flect that on the eve of permanent separa¬ tion of the members of this class, the image of the class, that will carry through the years, is a composite of the total contribu¬ tions of each of its members in their years at Woburn High—the help of the last as well as the first. Perhaps the most significant single aim of the school during your stay has been the attempt to have all pupils learn to live in harmony in our American democracy, rec¬ ognizing their responsibilities as well as their rights. The promotion of the general wel¬ fare must have high priority if our society is to serve its reason for existence. In the days ahead, when discouragement and anxiety cause distress, we could prop¬ erly remember that we were not educated in a vacuum, that we must sincerely extend the hand of friendship and aid in the brother¬ hood of man, and that the pursuit of happi¬ ness and the promotion of the general wel¬ fare can most readily result when a volun¬ tary acceptance is made of our responsibili¬ ties as American Citizens. Certainly Donne pointed the way when he declared, “No man is an island . . . every.man is a part of the main.” May the future see your hopes fulfilled, and may your training here at Woburn High prepare you for your “finest hour.” Henry D. Blake, Principal
