Esse Quam Videri To be, not to seem The Senior Class proudly presents WOBURN HIGH SCHOOL Woburn, Massachusetts Volume XIV -I- to DEDICATION 99101 ry- H s Behind every well organized administra¬ tive office there is one person whose func¬ tion is that of coordinator of all business which goes through that office. In Woburn High School that person is the secretary to the principal. His constant efforts on behalf of all school personnel and students are well known by all who have had business in that office. The seniors especially have benefited from his friendly assistance and extra work on our behalf. We know well the import of the old saying: “If you want something done, ask the busiest person you know to do it.” That person has never been too busy to oblige us. As a small measure of our gratitude for his assistance the Class of Ninteen Hundred and Sixty proudly dedicate this volume of the Innitou to JOHN P. MAHONEY Mary, Donna, and Mr. Mahoney take time out for a picture. 4 Mr. Mahoney puts the bulletin out. JOHN P. MAHONEY FOREWORD As The Great Spirit, Manitou, looks with confidence toward the future, so we too look forward with the knowledge that we have been sufficiently prepared at Woburn High School for whatever the future holds. Our preparation for life, reflected in all its phases in The Innitou to be recalled for us in years to come, has fostered a balance between work and leisure. During our years at Woburn High School, we have gained a deeper respect for our leaders, a more extended knowledge and greater use of our skills, and a deeper appreciation of human values. When you registered for the tenth grade in Sep¬ tember 1057 your graduation may have seemed to be in the distant future, but now it is here and the past three years have passed so quickly that you haven’t had much time to really think of the future. In later life when you recall these three years at Woburn High School you will agree that they were the happiest days that you ever exper¬ ienced. Education in a democracy, however, must not stop with graduation. The acquiring of a diploma is not the end; it is just the beginning. It tells all man¬ kind, and especially those people who are interested in your welfare, that you now have the preliminary background and skills to proceed to higher education, or to have a try at solving the many problems in¬ volved in employment. Inclosing this brief message I want you to know that, although I have not had the opportunity to know each of you personally, you do have a special friend in the School Department Office. Your future success in college, business, or in the professions is one of my sincerest wishes. Please do not hesitate to call upon me if I can assist you in any way. Dr. J. Frank Hassett Superintendent of Schools Miss McGowan helps Dr. Hassett check his schedule for the day. 10 PRINCIPALS MESSAGE Mr. Blake and Mr. Brennan enjoy the Student Council Tea. H i 1 7m. 1, Members of the Graduating Class of 1960: The activities of Commencement Week in the colleges and secondary schools of our country are occasions when speakers and writers often are asked to convey a message to members of graduating classes. Traditionally, the advice so freely given is too often filled with platitudes and sophistries as unconvincing now as the day they were first pro¬ posed. It is as though one were asked to convey in cap¬ sule form the wisdom of the ages to serve neophy¬ tes as a guiding beacon on the highway of life. Yet, certainly, this eve of Graduation in June 1960 should be a time of deep and honest reflection. It is most important to you and to the society in which you live, how well you have matched your capabilities with the educational opportunities of¬ fered you in your high school career. If you have met this challenge, if you have learned to live well with your fellow man, and if you have learned the lesson of humility, your education has not been in vain. For over one hundred years, it has always been the principal purpose of the Woburn High School to provide, in keeping with the demands of the changing eras, the best possible opportunities in secondary education for the youth who attend the school. It is the sincere hope of the administration and staff that these opportunities have been seized to aid you in preparing for the uncertain but chal¬ lenging future. i) Henry D. Adviser Robert Cagnina Vice President Joan Moore Treasurer Janet Carbone Secretary We, the class of 1960, now look back on our pleasant and joyous times at Woburn High. Three years ago we entered our Sophomore year rather timidly but proudly, and during the short span of these three years we have known many eventful days. Our teachers, our classes, our friends, our good times, and our bad times; these things will be re¬ membered for many years to come. Our senior year has been a series of exciting events; our athletic games, our dances, and our many school functions have all contributed to a most enjoyable year. We will look back on this last year at Woburn High School as a memorable milestone, for now we each must go our separate ways into the future. 18 CAROLE ANN ABREU Curriculum II Activities: Future Nurses 2 . . . Throughout the play, Mother and Dad, now casually, now in great concern, discuss their youngsters’ pro¬ blems. The play, enlivened by frequent bits of humor, is a gen¬ uine study of the “inter-reac¬ tions” of parent and youngster. In the end, the problems are solved and the curtain closes on a happy ending. CLASS OF 1961 Two hundred and ninety seven students of the Junior Class returned to their classes early in September. REVELATION In the building standing here, The Sculptors toil; Creating, forming, molding, Not inanimate objects, but living personalities. As Sculptors we know them not; Friends, teachers, dedicated workers, yes; But deft, dextrous, devoted hands, indeed, Smooth the rough edges to perfection. Slowly they labor, One following another, Year after year, Each adding a mark of his own. Distinguishable now: Maturity, knowledge, understanding; Fused with careful strokes, Achieving epitome of form. The day the Sculptors lay their tools aside, Reluctantly, wistfully, yet hopefully, Their work, ready for the unveiling, Extends, row on row, cloaked in black raiment. Now, the final moment; The presentation of the work; A voice calls out a name, And the world sees! Not a Sculptor and a statue, But teacher and student. The mediator leading the neophyte; To the threshold of Life. 72 Tune: From the First Hello to the Last Good-bye MEMORIES FAIR From the first hello to the last good-bye We’ve enjoyed a pleasant sojourn Through the years at Woburn High As we travel on toward our future goals We’ll have mem’ries fair to cherish and share True friendship will remain And the joys we’ve known we will long retain. When in future years we must face a trial We’ll have learning we’ve acquired To attend us all the while. Though we’ve far to go on the road of life The instruction strong we’ve gained all along Will guide us on our way ’Till we reach that last graduation day. 73 Dan, Rachel, and Dotty seem to be enjoying Gary and Lee’s duet. BAND The Woburn High Band always presents a beautiful demonstration, whether at as¬ sembly, on the football field, or in the many parades in which they are invited to march. Much credit goes to Mr. Kimball, who has produced a precision unit year after year. The band is one of the finer activities of the school and one of the most essential parts of student life. Keep that banner straight girls! The band plays at halftime. 95 Kneeling: M. J. Niemann (co-captain), D. Ryan (co-captain). Standing: J. Rackcliff, M. Petersen, E. Lombard, P. Donohoe, G. This team is undoubtedly one of the best Woburn has fielded for some time. Good sportsmanship was dis¬ played both on the field and off the field. The Woburn line swamps a runner. George and Donnie are in close pursuit of a Win¬ chester player. Mr. White and Charlie have a pre¬ game conference. 97 First Row: E. Callahan, T. O’Brien, R. Haggerty, D. Rogers, R. Burnham, G. The girls’ sports in many high schools are neglected by the students, but at Wo¬ burn High they enjoy great participation. This is especially true of Field Hockey. This year, under the supervision of Miss Seminatore, the team seems to have started a winni ng type of playing and much is expected of them next year. The enthusiasm displayed by these girls has set a precedent to be followed by many teams to come. Kathy and Donna wait to see who will get the ball. 103 The “Tiger” makes friends with Andy. Dan, and Beverly help with the decorations. Everyone enjoys the Grand March. Some of our ushers. Everyone enjoys a grand march Our ushers perform their duties with dignity. 106 The officers of our junior year, Janet, Joan, Fred, and Richard, appear pleased. The big moment comes when Elaine is crownet Queen while Anne and Donna attend her. Joan gives a lei to Karen as Don and Peter look on. Just about every member of our class dances to the pleasant strains of Brogna’s orchestra. 107 SILHOUETTE IN BLUE ajj .
