THE PRINCIPAL CLASS OF 1959 Members of the Graduating Class of 1959: As you stand on the threshold of Gradua¬ tion from Woburn High School in June, 1959, and reflect on your years of preparation for this turning point in your life, you may well note that you have lived through years of crisis in world affairs. The world of yesteryear and the comparatively simple society of even the relatively recent days when you began your formal schooling have gone forever. In education, too, you have witnessed the intense interest and exhaustive studies which are being made on the modern comprehensive high school. An awakened and alarmed public has been made aware that the very welfare and safety of our beloved country is at stake in the coming years. It has been well said that hu¬ man history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe. This feeling of deep concern has found re¬ flection in the more challenging opportunities made available to you, and it is pleasing to note the eagerness and seriousness with which you have accepted the tasks. This attitude of cheerful and fearless acceptance of the fu¬ ture’s demands gives us great encouragement for youth in the days ahead. The intensified and changing programs in the humanities as well as in science and mathematics are suc¬ cessful because you have met them with in¬ creased application. The principal purpose of the Woburn High School, established well over a century ago, has always been to provide the best possible education the community could offer to fill the educational needs of all the youth who attend the school. These needs, once simple, are now as complex as the space age we have entered. Because we feel sincerely that your preparation by a competent and dedicated staff has been adequate, we have confidence in your future and the future of our country. May success attend your every effort, and may God be with you always on the highways of life. Henry D.
