We, the staff of the 1959 INNITOU, have attempted to record these never-to-be-for¬ gotten memories in order to keep them alive both literally and pictorially. Judging - by the cheerful expression on their faces, Karen and Mr. Ring seem to have reached a satis¬ factory decision during this guidance conference. DEDICATION The success of a graduate depends to some measure on his abilities, his apti¬ tudes, and his interests. To some ex¬ tent it depends on the instruction re¬ ceived and on the knowledge acquired. A great deal of success depends, how¬ ever, on the direction of these abilities, aptitudes, interests, instructions, and knowledge into the proper channels for each individual. For this guidance we have looked to a person who has willingly devoted his time and effort in mtr behalf. As a small measure of our gratitude for this de¬ votion to us, we, the Class of 1959, dedi¬ cate The INNITOU to Mr. Timothy F. Ring, Director of Guidance Mr. Ring is appreciative of the great help given to him by his secretary, Miss Rosalie Tirrell. 6 TIMOTHY F. RING A ION As we prepare to leave the restricted area of the class¬ room, we pause to reflect for a moment on that which we cher¬ ish most. Ranked high among our memories will be the hours spent under the tutelage of cap¬ able and devoted instructors and administrators. You have instilled in us ideals which we hope will bear fruition in the years ahead. For these ideals we shall be forever grate¬ ful. Our fondest hope is that we shall always be a credit to you. THE SUPERINTENDENT a SPEAK TO THE Members of the Graduating Class: In considering this final message a parting bit of advice to you, the Class of 1959, I find the task a difficult one. Due to the rapid strides and discoveries of science during the past de¬ cade, you will mature in a world with prob¬ lems beyond the imagination of any of us to¬ day. Further development of atomic power—un¬ heard of explorations into outer space—are just two of the many new situations which will arise to confront your generation. Are you prepared to meet these exigencies ? Your education in the Woburn Schools has been adequate and ranking high with that of any public school system in our country. In view, however, of the changing world, you must continue your search of knowledge; you must be alert at all times to the danger of complacency, and you must be ready to accept responsibility in the new world of which we now know so little. In order to preserve democracy and the American way of life, you must be ever vigi¬ lant to keep abreast, and even surpass, the youth of godless nations who have been train¬ ed in atheistic ideologies and whose aim is world domination. Your task is great, but our faith in you is greater. You will meet the challenge fearless¬ ly as generations of American youth have done in the past. As you leave the Woburn High School, our prayers go with you for a fruitful and happy future. 10 Dr. J. Frank Hassett Superintendent of Schools THE PRINCIPAL CLASS OF 1959 Members of the Graduating Class of 1959: As you stand on the threshold of Gradua¬ tion from Woburn High School in June, 1959, and reflect on your years of preparation for this turning point in your life, you may well note that you have lived through years of crisis in world affairs. The world of yesteryear and the comparatively simple society of even the relatively recent days when you began your formal schooling have gone forever. In education, too, you have witnessed the intense interest and exhaustive studies which are being made on the modern comprehensive high school. An awakened and alarmed public has been made aware that the very welfare and safety of our beloved country is at stake in the coming years. It has been well said that hu¬ man history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe. This feeling of deep concern has found re¬ flection in the more challenging opportunities made available to you, and it is pleasing to note the eagerness and seriousness with which you have accepted the tasks. This attitude of cheerful and fearless acceptance of the fu¬ ture’s demands gives us great encouragement for youth in the days ahead. The intensified and changing programs in the humanities as well as in science and mathematics are suc¬ cessful because you have met them with in¬ creased application. The principal purpose of the Woburn High School, established well over a century ago, has always been to provide the best possible education the community could offer to fill the educational needs of all the youth who attend the school. These needs, once simple, are now as complex as the space age we have entered. Because we feel sincerely that your preparation by a competent and dedicated staff has been adequate, we have confidence in your future and the future of our country. May success attend your every effort, and may God be with you always on the highways of life. Henry D. Your guiding hand has shown the way; Life’s new road shall start this day. Your faith shall not fail as we blaze a trail To conquer fields anew for you. So let our hearts shine with pride, as we say goodbye To all our friends at dear Woburn High. 64 Our Monument By MARTHA McGOWAN There came a day, the final one for us; Upon which former days frothed clear and crystalline, Adrift, and gone soon on the surge of Time, , Floating on seas of memories. We wanted then a monument erect, A buoy to mark our course, our passage there. A mooring fast to bear against the swirling tides around, Changeless, and anchored on solid ground. But Time and Tide care nought for stone Or monuments of Man’s design; Rigid, they crumble, fall, are swept away, Leaving no trace behind. If, then, we seek which shrine will stand, Which ties hold fast through future storms, We find that these won’t fail, though we must part: The fond remembrances of the heart! CLASS POEM Realizing that all learning does not take place in the at¬ mosphere of the classroom, it was not too many weeks after our class schedules had been completed that we were again busy organizing our clubs and sports groups to try our strength at leadership. Under the sponsorship of faculty mem¬ bers, many new groups were added to those already well-es¬ tablished. An activity for every student and every student a member of an activity became our slogan. THE INNITOU The problems of The Innitou staff have been many, but the rewards have been great. Anyone who has walked by room 318 on any afternoon could have seen the eagerness with which the staff attacked these problems. From a clutter of write-ups, pictures, dummies, copy, etc., has emerged a book which the staff hopes will bring you much satisfaction now and in the years to come. What’s so puzzling, Pat? Everyone enjoys looking at pictures. The yearbook must have patrons also. Ruthie and Judy have some more work to do. Mr. Vantine discusses our many problems. Our boys, though not champs, displayed all the enthusiasm and stamina which is necessary for a successful team. Under the excellent leadership of Captain Joe Marciano our team was unsurpassed in good sportsmanship and school spirit. Jump — Bobby — Jump! Who’ll get the jump? The Girls’ Basketball Team, although it did not have a victorious season, nev¬ ertheless scored high in enthusiasm and school spirit. Along with the cher¬ ished memories of our friend¬ ships made at school, we shall always hold you, our sponsors, in high esteem. We are most grateful for your assistance.
