NINETEEN HUNDRED FIFTY-EIGHT Published By The Senior Class WOBURN HIGH SCHOOL Woburn, Massachusetts V ] 3 1 1 15 VOLUME XII 2 _ , 3 FOREWORD Time is the essence of all being — the yesterdays, the todays, the tomorrows. When their events are compiled, man¬ kind ' s record of progress, achievement, and accomplishment becomes a bright page in history for all to peruse. We are limiting our record of attain¬ ment to our time in school. These are our bright pages. It is with deep sentiments of gen¬ uine friendship and appreciation that the Class of 1958 dedicates this volume of The Innitou to WILLIAM J. HORRIGAN Worries about mathematical terms and problems disappear as Mr. Horrigan explains the simplicity of them. Nothing to it, boys! 6 o WILLIAM J. HORRIGAN 7 Miss Burke explains Julius Caesar. Coach Dorrington explains some football plays. Mr. Connolly gives the good news to the boys. Miss Brady dictates short¬ hand to the girls. Miss Caruso and Mr. Marashio enjoy a pleasant chat. Mr. Mahoney, our efficient secretary. 8 9 SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE: TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1958: May I extend my congratulations to each member of the graduating class of 1958 and to the parents who, through their cooperation with the school personnel, have made the successful completion of your elementary and secondary education possible. In our former yearbook messages we have stressed the fact that the very word commencement signifies a be¬ ginning rather than an end. It should be a beginning of your further quest for knowledge and truth. We have tried to give you the tools, the ideals and the attitudes to aid you in the future years. If we have been successful, you will not stop here, but will be eager to increase your knowl¬ edge and understanding. You are on the threshold of a tremendous new age. Atomic power is still in its infancy; scientists are reaching out into space. Many educators are beginning to stress the value of a scientific education io the exclusion of the humanities and the cultural subjects. We in this country believe in educating the whole student; this has been our objective in the Woburn Schools. We have perfect confidence that in the future you will be able to take your place among the other members of your genera¬ tion in solving the problems of a new age. It is our sincere prayer that you will never cease to ask for Divine Guidance; that you will continue to learn and develop your native abilities to their maximum, and that you will contribute your share, however large or small, to¬ ward the ultimate goal—a better world. Dr. J. Frank Hassett Superintendent of Schools Dr. Hassett ' s dictation keeps his secretary. Miss McGowan, busy. 10 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE i Mr. Blake discusses the program with Mr. Vallario. MEMBERS OF THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 1958: The eve of graduation for the class of 1958 is a time fraught with anxiety. It recalls the words of Dickens writ¬ ing of another era in history: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity ... it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair. Certainly the momentous events of your last year in high school, the increasingly wondrous developments in science, and the inquiries of our leaders require us to ask how well we have prepared to enter our complex modern world as graduates in the spring of 1958. A new chapter in the record of mankind dawned with the first release of nuclear energy! We have come far from the relatively simple society which existed in the early days of our high school in the mid-nineteenth century. The ever- changing and organic society of 1958 is a daily challenge to the methods of education in our present secondary schools. Yet the principal aim of the Woburn High School has always been to provide the best possible education that our community could provide to meet the contemporary educational needs of the youth who attend the school. It is hoped that we have learned from history that the great problem of our times may well be the proper develop¬ ment of moral and spiritual values. If the days at hand are grim, we must strengthen our faith in the present and in the great potentialities that lie within all of us. We must remember as we enter the competitive task of daily living in our American democracy in 1958 that the thing that counts is not what we can ' t do, but what we can. We must use our abilities, not our disabilities. In that, I feel, you and our country will reach our greatest day. Henry D. Their influence and teaching will be felt in the future as they are today. Few of us ever pause to appreciate their efforts to encourage us toward the fulfillment of our ambitions. Without their unfailing interest, we would have accomplished little. We sincerely offer our thanks to them. 12 Anastia G. Canty French Joseph F. Curran, Jr. Social Studies Paul E. This was a year of great respon¬ sibility; of interviews, applications, examinations, field trips, conferences— the last chance to make decisions for the future while under the guidance of Woburn High. This was a year of great enjoyment; of exciting athletic events, of dances, of banquets, of commence¬ ment—our last chance to meet together socially as undergraduates. The accom¬ plishments of the Class of 1958 have now become a matter of record. Mr. Horrigan, Adviser; H. Neimszyk, Vice- President; J. MacDonald, Secretary; V. Carbone, President; E. The highlight of academic life, membership in the National Honor Society, was now a realization; the highlight of social life, the Junior Prom, a mem¬ ory. After a period of gradual integration they assumed their role as contributors to the aca¬ demic and social life of the school. Extra-curricular activities beckoned but not at the expense of the class¬ room. The class had 46 members representing it on the honor list. The play Sweet Sixteen gave promise of future showmen and the first attempt at a social whirl, the Snowflake Festi¬ val, proved a huge success. Miss Evelyn Caruso and Mr . Judith Clarke 60 CLASS POEM CHOOSING THE WAY by Linda Preston Life is a road of various ways, Each whispering softly, Come here. To Youth, so eager to travel the road, Rings out a question strong and clear: Which is the path that I should choose? Which, for me, the best; And where shall I find the guide that I need To aid me in my quest? Came then a voice In answer sent; Straight to the soul Of Youth it went. Have faith in yourself, It seemed to say, And the courage to try, When choosing your way. Hope, you may, and even dream, But work, you must, and wisely plan; Yet if you slip and stumble, Arise and try again. Always as a guide, Remember, use your heart. Thus, on the road of life, Youth did bravely start. Though Tomorrow we may pause, To look back along the way: Our Tomorrow is yet to come, And Youth must choose today. 61 OUR CLASS WILL We the class of 1958, do bequeath the following: Julene Ames leaves the first seat in the first row to Louise Ackerman. TANNER NEWS First the conception of an idea, then the development of this idea; write and re-write; read the galleys and find appropriate illus¬ trations; meet the deadline, cover costs— these are a few of the never-ending problems of a newspaper staff which produces four copies a year. Joy of viewing our efforts in print, of keeping our fellow-students abreast of the events of the school; of attending the editors ' conferences; of circulating copies of an award-winning newspaper—these are the rewards of a newspaper staff. Lawrence and Jean are pleased with Sheila ' s results. Sheila edits the copy 71 First Row: P. Prat t, R. Ccccoluto (business manager), J. Clarke (editor), R. Roche (treasurer), C. Moore, R. Tracy. Where did those pictures disappear to? Has anyone seen . . . These and hundreds of similar questions are heard coming from beneath the crack of Room 323 almost any afternoon until three-thirty. In addition to learning the technicalities of pro¬ ducing an annual, the staff of THE INNITOU learned a great deal in the art of human relations. What a relief after the last deadline was met! In the short interval before the copy was returned from the printer to be proofed, we started our plans for the trip to New York with the members of the local chapter of the National Honor Society as our guests. The four hour train ride provided us with an oppor¬ tunity to discuss some of our ideas for the class ban¬ quet, sponsored by the INNITOU staff, and also for the scholarship awarded by the Yearbook. After much worry and hurry the Yearbook was distributed. To see the pleased seniors as they re¬ ceived their books and to know what these copies will mean in future years—this was the staff ' s reward. Carol and Judy hurry to job number the pages before the printer arrives. 11 j ilk y First Row: S. Goulet, M. Sullivan, S. Burdett, M. Lada, J. MacConnell, B. Carrns, Mr. Kimball, J. This organization provides the musical entertain¬ ment at many of the school functions. ORCHESTRA PEP CLUB It takes more than the team to make the football season successful; interest, spirit, and enthusiasm are needed. This is what the Pep Club has contributed. At every football game approximately one hundred girls in colorful black and orange supported the cheerleaders in urging the team on to victory. At every football game of the 1957 season, they added the pep that only one hundred high school girls cheering for their team could add. Mr. Ratchford and the enthusiastic members of the club have aided the cheer¬ leaders in promoting school spirit. First Row: G. Boutwell, B. Hull, J. Larkin, Mr. Ratchford, J. Chamberlain, S. Elected for ability, as well as popularity, they have for their main objective the co-ordinating of all school activities. Meetings are held bi-monthly and each home¬ room and organization is represented by a delegate. Rallies, assemblies, and student exchanges are sponsored by this group. JUNIOR RED CROSS Striving to develop a spontaneous accept¬ ance of willingness to aid others, the Junior Red Cross volunteered to undertake several projects during the year. The major accomplishment was carried out in the fall, when the members dressed and distributed dolls to children confined to hospitals during the Christmas season. They supplemented the club activities by featuring two representa¬ tives at the meetings of the Boston Chapter. Their newest project to be considered is the assistance at the local hospital. Although the members of the group made plans to enter the Science Fair in the spring, they set one main objective for their first year—to promote a general feeling of interest and enjoyment in the study of science. At their monthly meetings they discussed a variety of subjects under the guidance of the chairman of their advisers, Mr. Vallario. .afP Reach for the sky Grin and bear it Before the game It ' s up to you, John f -mMfc M { ‘ Si wk. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Although the Tanners proved tough on their home court, they found it impossible to come through with flying colors. The fact that they failed to win the Northeastern Conference championship does not discredit them in any way. They will be remembered as a team with the spirit that produces champions. The boys have gained valuable experience despite the fact that they finished the season with a 3-won and 13-lost record. They made up in drive and energy what they lacked in experience. Our guiding force Quite a show of legs! The Girls ' Basketball Team, under the excellent leadership of Coach Higgins and Captain Maureen Garvey, had an exciting and victorious season. The team which consists of sophomores, juniors, and seniors, though not undefeated, won five of nine games and showed great sportsmanship and school spirit. Our vivacious cheerleaders, dressed in the tradi¬ tional black and orange, gave moral support at all the games. Between the games they made up new cheers and taught them to the students at pre-game rallies. The short cheers seemed highly effective in the fast-moving games. HOCKEY The coaching ability of Mr. Robert Connolly paid great dividends to this year ' s hockey team which was under the leader¬ ship of Captain John Day. They responded to the fans ' enthusiasm by winning 10 games and tying 7. By doing so they qualified for the league playoffs and overwhelmingly won the Woodman Cup. An invitation was extended to them to compete in the state play-offs at the Boston Arena. 92 Smiles conquer all Hard at work The girls ' field hockey team, despite the fact that they finished the season with no victories to their credit, showed great spirit this year. A green team, made up for the most port of sophomores and juniors, held Stoneham to a 0-0 score. Their last game, played with Wilmington, ended in a 1-1 tie. T heir first and only goal for the season was made by their captain, Kathy Danizio, in the first two seconds of the last game. The sea¬ son finished with the cry, Wait till next year. McGovern During Mr. McGovern ' s years at Woburn High School, the contributions made in the lives of his boys ' toward the development of high ideals, gentlemanly deportment, and clean living are too far-reaching to enumerate. Too many, also, are the thrilling contests, eager competitions, and high-spirited meets of his teams. However, some of his outstanding victories never to be erased from the annals of Woburn High School athletic achievements include: The Fitchburg Relays 1934 The Mystic Valley Championship 1940 The Northeastern Conference Championship 1954 Cross Country Champions Middlesex League 1947-1948 Cross Country Champions Middlesex League 1956-1957 A plaque from the Sports Trail Century Club- Chicago in recognition of 100 victories in 1957 Mr. McGovern may leave us in person, but the spirit that he has instilled in us shall always remain. PRETTY JUNIORS ASSIST OUR 1957 MARSHALL Graduation week is the most exciting one of the entire year. Juniors, as well as seniors, are caught in the bustle of excite¬ ment. Our happy queen, Elsie Our class officers BLUE The pause that refreshes The start of a wonderful evening Our debonaire ushers 105 MINUTES TO REMEMBER Memories of the class of 1958 are many and varied. Our first thoughts are of the social and extracurricular activities, the basketball, football and hockey games; the dances, the club meetings and the social hours. We think last of the all-important curricular work—the subject which we finally mastered but which almost mastered us, our favorite teachers, the fun of shops or home ec . These and others will combine to form the impression of our alma mater. On these pages is re-enacted both pictorially and verbally our high school days. In looking through this book we remember school as it was; we remember the buzz of the closing bell; the shuffling of feet in the corridors; the joyful goodbyes and the slamming of car doors. As we leave this way of life to enter on new paths, a nostalgic feeling creeps over us, and we join with Elizabeth Akers Allen in saying: Backward, turn backward, O Time, in your flight.
