EDITION WOBURN, MASSACHUSETTS 2 This is our FOREWORD li e n n i t o u The title, The Innitou, is sig¬ nificant of the theme portray¬ ed throughout the book. Be¬ fore the advent of the white man, Horn Pond was one of the more frequented camping sites of the Indians. The Great Spirit, Manitou, who was be¬ lieved to dwell on the moun¬ tain which bore his name, de¬ lighted in gazing at his image reflected in the sparkling wat¬ ers below. Thus, the name Innitou, meaning looking glass, was derived. The Innitou reflects our memories of school, friends, and activities throughout our three years in high school. 4 ear...a year of. FRANK HASSETT Our Superintendent MESSAGE TO THE GRADUATING CLASS You are one of the thousands of graduat¬ ing classes throughout the length and breadth of our land. From among you will come the statesmen, the scientists, the philosophers, the teachers, the doctors, and the religious lead¬ ers who will decide the destiny of the world for the next fifty years or more. The respon¬ sibility seems frightening in the face of to¬ day ' s precarious world situation, but it is also a tremendous and inspiring challenge. Many of the older generation have grown weary of the struggle. Your efforts in working toward the ultimate goal of a peaceful world with freedom for all peoples will be similar to a transfusion of fresh new blood to a tired soldier. Your faith, high ideals, and courage, coupled with your innate abilities, will make an invincible weapon against iqnorance and tyranny. The only danger we face is that of Youth ' s becoming lackadaisical and indifferent; of each underestimating his own importance in the General Plan. Let me say in the words of Father Keller, You CAN change the world. You must not feel that you have finished your education upon leaving High School. You must keep on learning and developing your native talents. You must start early to take an active interest in community, civic, and national affairs, contributing new ideas wher¬ ever possible. Yours is a tremendous task, but you have the youth, courage, and faith in God to face it. As we watch you leave the Woburn High School this June of nineteen hundred fifty- seven with a strong feeling of hope for your future and that of the whole world, we say, God bless you. 8 J. FRANK HASSETT Superintendent of Schools To The Class of 1957 To the Class of 1957: The Yearbook of the Class of 1957 is a tribute to the efforts of the staff, the skillful guidance of the assisting faculty, and the co¬ operation of the members of the graduating class. The associations of your high school days, the activities of your class, and the pur¬ pose of the school will always remain fresher in your memory because you carefully pre¬ pared this permanent pictorial record. The great challenge of the Woburn High School is to prepare pupils for their roles in our American society. From the relatively sim¬ ple and well-defined community in the early days of the school to the increasingly complex world of an atomic age, the Woburn High School has endeavored through an organic development of its curriculum to meet the challenge. On the eve of graduation in June, 1957, we are asked to rededicate ourselves to the attitudes and ideals which the school has stressed, and which have made our country the beacon light of freedom in a world beset by anxiety and crisis. It is the prayerful wish of the Woburn High School that each member of this graduating class has been prepared by the activities and associations which this book records to make his maximum contribution to the general wel¬ fare and attain his personal happiness in America ' s golden future. Ricker 1892-1956 Born in South Berwick, Maine, on January 3, 1892, Mr. Ricker was graduated from Bowdoin College with the Class of 1906. A practical philosopher of quiet, friendly manner, he assumed the duties of a chemistry and physics instructor at Woburn High School in 1918. In 1 920 he was appointed as a sub-master of our high school which position he held at the time of his death. His many friends among the faculty, student body and alumni of Woburn High School share with Mrs. Ricker and his son the deep loss of a beloved teacher, a devoted husband and father, and a loyal friend. 15 On September 4, 1956 the doors of Woburn High School opened for registration of Seni¬ ors, Juniors and Sophomores. STUDENT COUNC Janet ' s idea meets with Mary ' s approval but Carl and Harold seem hesitant. Representatives from each homeroom and organization are elected each year by the pupils to be members of the Student Council. Through these representatives all students have a voice in school affairs. With the help of Mr. O ' Donnell, our faculty adviser, the council sponsored many assemblies and social affairs, financed by dues of the student body. The biggest fi¬ nancial and social event was the Booster Dance held in November. 64 Elaine, Paul, Bobby, and Brendan are delighted to answer questions on scholarship. To obtain membership in the National Honor Society a student must maintain a B average and possess qualities of high character and leadership. The great in¬ crease in membership shows clearly the students ' growth of interest in scholarship, one of the main purposes of this group. The Woburn Chapter of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools is cap¬ ably supervised by Mr. Connolly, Miss Soles, Mr. Horrigan, and Mr. Ring. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY 1st Row—V. Elia, M. STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES To Rotary and Woman ' s Club Carl explains the advantages of Rotary while the girls wait their turn to praise the Woman ' s Club. To be invited into the world of adults is the cherished dream of every teen-ager. Each year on recommendation of the faculty and the principal, two boys from the Junior Class are selected to attend the weekly meetings of the Rotary Club during the Student ' s Senior Year. For a number of years also, Woburn High School has been represented at the weekly meetings of the Woburn Woman ' s Club by a group of girls chosen from among the honor students. It has been their privilege to act as a liaison between the youth of the school and the adults of their city. 66 1st Row—M. Benullo, V. Hall, J. Caros, T. Martin (Pres.), Mr. Curran (Adviser), W. The Tanner News, our prize-winning newspaper, was published four times dur¬ ing the school year and was distributed to the students before vacations. With Ernest Coakley as Editor-in-Chief, the newspaper gave full coverage to the ac¬ tivities and features concerning our school life. The three classes were repre¬ sented on the staff. Miss Brady, Mr. Flaherty, and Mr. Walsh assisted our faculty adviser, Mr. Connolly. Ernest explains the correc¬ tions to his assistants, but Carol seems to be the only one wor¬ ried. 68 Bernard enlivens many gatherings with his accordion while Richard en¬ tertains with his sax. ORCHESTRA This school year found the members of the orchestra upholding their record of the past by contributing to many of our social affairs. Kay must be a rapid typist if she can keep six girls busy proofing her copy. Since our student body has been keenly interested in the yearbook, the staff has made this edition more inclusive. Under the guid¬ ance of Miss Margaret Burke assisted by Miss Catherine Burke and Miss Doris Lynch, it has proved a full-time job, but it has also been a never-to-be-forgotten experience. Stretching the dollar, planning lay-outs, scheduling re-takes, checking and rechecking copy, burning the midnight oil to meet dead¬ lines, and all the other horrible nightmares faded into the past as we distributed The 1957 Innitou to the seniors without cost at the June banquet sponsored by the staff. 74 Efforts of hard-working staff culminate in the 1957 INNITOU Kneeling —W.
