Jo the L Lin ol 1955: The world of 1955 is a time of crisis at home and abroad. It is an era fraught with uncertainty among leaders in government and with despair by a large segment of our population. It is not a time calculated to calm the troubled mind. Yet in the uncertainty and despair of our times lies the challenge to our youth in the class of 1955, Woburn High School. None of us with faith in our country and civilization, none of us who has learned the lessons of history can avoid this challenge. Was it not often in perilous days that the challenge of the days called forth many of civilization ' s greatest contributions? We need only recall that during England ' s most devastating civil war that Milton wrote his greatest poetry; that while Napoleon ' s armies subjugated Europe, Beethoven wrote his music; that during our own Civil War,- Lincoln postulated forever the dignity of all men, irrespective of creed or race or color. It is our task on the eve of graduation in June, 1955, to renew ourselves with the faith that in the refusal to accept defeat in the face of despair and un¬ certainty that our American democracy will reach its highest hour. Let us look, then, on the Yearbook of the Class of 1955, as a permanent pictorial memorial to these days, and friends, and opportunities, which pre¬ pared us to open without fear and timidity the door to America ' s golden future —a door which can be opened only from within. M eMaae t to JL C lasi oj tty55 I wish to congratulate each member of the Class of 1955. Your four short years of high school training are over, and you are now ready to find a place in employment or to continue your education at some new place of higher learning. The Class of 1955 has made a fine record at Woburn High School, and we in charge of the educational program feel quite certain that each graduate has been adequately prepared to meet the many new and interesting experi¬ ences which he or she will find in our community and social life. Your parents are to be congratulated also for realizing the value of a high school education and for having you complete your high school studies. In some cases your parents had to make many financial sacrifices to make this possible. I sincerely hope that you will remember to return occasionally to the school to talk with your teachers, principal and others who will always be interested in your welfare. I. FRANK HASSETT Superintendent of Schools
