Through them authors have set forth stirring descriptions of our magnificent land and of its deep spiritual truths. It is through this medium of literature that we learn much concerning the forces which have influenced our lives. With this in mind, the 1955 Innitou Staff has attempted to present the adventures and achievements of its class in the form of the novel whose plot will be forever stamped on the mind of each student. outeitt DEDICATION SUPERINTENDENT ' S MESSAGE PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE FACULTY SENIORS ACTIVITIES CLASS SONG CLASS POEM Caesar Augustus was pre¬ sented to the school by Mr. S Mrs. James Skinner in memory of their son, James Lambton Skinner of the Class of 1890. Athena was received as a first prize in a Herald contest held some time before 1907. It was placed temporarily in the library until moved to its present position in the auditorium. 1 ICdt LOtt ETHEL M. BASCOM The counselors who never change, the friends who never go. Reflection is the best medium of thought. There will be many in the city of Woburn and in other communities who will pause to reflect this year on their high school days. Mirrored in these thoughts will be memories of class¬ mates and teachers who have moulded their associations of early life and character. Outstanding among these will be a teacher of long service and highest repute; one whose years were untiringly devoted to the highest ideals and ethics of the profession which she has followed so devotedly. Although Miss Bascom will leave Woburn High School this June, the influence which she has exerted on the students will be felt for years to come. We all wish her many years of retirement and the best that the future can hold. We, therefore, deem it an honored privilege to dedicate our book to Miss Ethel M. Bascom. M eMaae t to JL C lasi oj tty55 I wish to congratulate each member of the Class of 1955. Your four short years of high school training are over, and you are now ready to find a place in employment or to continue your education at some new place of higher learning. The Class of 1955 has made a fine record at Woburn High School, and we in charge of the educational program feel quite certain that each graduate has been adequately prepared to meet the many new and interesting experi¬ ences which he or she will find in our community and social life. Your parents are to be congratulated also for realizing the value of a high school education and for having you complete your high school studies. In some cases your parents had to make many financial sacrifices to make this possible. I sincerely hope that you will remember to return occasionally to the school to talk with your teachers, principal and others who will always be interested in your welfare. I. FRANK HASSETT Superintendent of Schools Jo the L Lin ol 1955: The world of 1955 is a time of crisis at home and abroad. It is an era fraught with uncertainty among leaders in government and with despair by a large segment of our population. It is not a time calculated to calm the troubled mind. Yet in the uncertainty and despair of our times lies the challenge to our youth in the class of 1955, Woburn High School. None of us with faith in our country and civilization, none of us who has learned the lessons of history can avoid this challenge. Was it not often in perilous days that the challenge of the days called forth many of civilization ' s greatest contributions? We need only recall that during England ' s most devastating civil war that Milton wrote his greatest poetry; that while Napoleon ' s armies subjugated Europe, Beethoven wrote his music; that during our own Civil War,- Lincoln postulated forever the dignity of all men, irrespective of creed or race or color. It is our task on the eve of graduation in June, 1955, to renew ourselves with the faith that in the refusal to accept defeat in the face of despair and un¬ certainty that our American democracy will reach its highest hour. Let us look, then, on the Yearbook of the Class of 1955, as a permanent pictorial memorial to these days, and friends, and opportunities, which pre¬ pared us to open without fear and timidity the door to America ' s golden future —a door which can be opened only from within. The main purpose of this group is to bring about improvements and to give the students an opportunity to have a voice in the functioning of the school. Each student in the school is asked to pay ten cents to help the council carry on its projects. Under its conscientious advisers, Mr. James O ' Donnell and Mrs. Lawrence Conroy, the council held its annual dance in November and has sponsored all the assemblies during the school year. The Key Club is composed of boys selected from the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades with the approval of the principal. They meet under the spon¬ sorship of the local Kiwanis Club with Mr. Edward Marashio acting as the school adviser. This club aims for the development of leadership among youth and for the fostering of justice, liberty and democ¬ racy. True to its motto, We Build , the club is always ready to assist in any program which the school considers worthy. 1st Row: R. McGurl, J. McGurl, W. Pickett, L. DeLuca (Sec.), L. Levine (Lt. It added greatly to our assemblies during the course of the year and was always ready to lend assistance to any group calling upon it. 1st Row: N. Robb, C. Sweetser, J. Their ex¬ cellent performances contribute much to the enjoyment of school assemblies and other programs. In addition to these assignments, they give willingly of their time to outside performances. One of the highlights of this year was the open¬ ing of the On to Washington Drive” at the Strand Theatre. The purpose of the school orchestra is to give musical-minded students a chance to further their knowledge of music while at the same time gaining enjoyment from playing the various instruments. The Glee Club, under the capable direction of Mr. Edson Kimball, worked enthusiastically during the year. One of the features of graduation each year is the performance by the Senior Girls ' Glee Club. Membership in this group is open to all senior girls who have been enrolled in the chorus or music classes through¬ out the entire three years. £ ettLPt 9 1st Row: T. McCue, J. Rogers, C. On the football field they dis¬ played new struts and twists which helped to entertain the spectators be¬ tween the periods in the games. Fre- guently they displayed their talents while accompanying the band during its many marching activities. The cap¬ tain, Charlotte Lavacchia, was respon¬ sible for the many wonderful perform¬ ances of the group. turn a tetter 1st Row: J. Pattelena, C. Lavacchia (Cap ' t), L. Anderson. 2nd Row: F. Each year these girls are chosen from the student body by teachers and coaches of other schools. Eleven juniors and seniors assisted by their mascot, Terry Varey, and their ad¬ viser, Miss Trowbridge, urged the teams on to vic¬ tory. The compliments of the spectators at the games were well-deserved. Only hours of drill and practice could have brought forth such outstanding perform¬ ances as they have given. It is their duty to see that the corridors are kept clear during the filing periods and that order is maintained during fire drills. The members of this squad have also served as ushers at various school functions during the school year. The main purpose of the Junior Red Cross is to bring happiness to others. One of its biggest projects this year was the dressing of dolls for children in hospitals. Much of the clothing for these dolls was made by hand by the girls in the group. Among other under¬ takings by this group was the making of tray favors for Easter, holiday boxes for May, and birthday boxes for June. These were sent to nearby Veterans ' Hospitals. Zd c 1st Row: E. The girls and boys enrolled in this course meet twice a week for classroom in¬ struction. Actual driving experience is gained during after school hours when the members use the school-owned car. After twenty weeks of training, a stu¬ dent may try out for a license. Those who are successful also receive a cer¬ tificate entitling them to an insurance deduction. Front Row: J. Foley, R. The Staff is composed entirely of seniors who pos¬ sess qualities of leadership, responsi¬ bility, co-operation, and determination. Regularly scheduled meetings are held on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month when the different depart¬ ments meet as a whole to formulate plans and exchange ideas. Most of the actual editing of the book must be done after school hours. Under the capable direction of Miss Margaret Burke, assisted by Miss Catherine Burke and Miss Doris Lynch, the Staff brings to a close its activities for the year by sponsoring the Senior Class Banquet financed by funds from this activity. 1st Row: J. J lati ua i A, Scholarship, service, leadership, character—these four qualities deter¬ mine membership in the Woburn chapter of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools. Contrary to pop¬ ular belief, scholarship alone does not make a Student eligible for member¬ ship, although each member must maintain a B average. Most of the students in this society hold high offices in other school activities. Membership in the society is one of the highest honors which a student can achieve in high school—an honor which is carried on beyond high school, for graduate membership is retained after gradua¬ tion. To stimulate interest in the society, members are encouraged to wear em¬ blems of this national organization and printed membership cards are given to each member. This society is under the supervision and guidance of Mr. Shipley Ricker. During the fall one of the most active groups in the school was the Cross Country Team. The boys had a great deal of stamina and underwent rigorous training under Coach John McGovern and their enthusiastic Captain John Dineen. The season ran from the open¬ ing of the school year through the first of November. In addition to competing with surrounding schools, the team ran in the Pilgrim Division Meet, the Mid¬ dlesex Valley League Meet, and the State Meet. This team made a fine showing at all of these events. C t A-4- 1st Row: R. Kelley, J. Ray, J. Dineen (Cap ' t), Mr. J. McGovern, J. Marlowe, J. Porter (Mgr.), R. Doherty, R. Walsh. 2nd Row: R. Although the Field Hockey Team was not victorious this year, they displayed qualities of good character and sports¬ manship inspired by their excellent coach, Miss Trowbridge. They put every effort into the games and played their best. On many unpleasant days they could be found out on the field, hoping to perfect their game. 7 1st Row: C. Sweetser, L. Cuozzi, N. Every afternoon the can¬ didates practice on the track and sur¬ rounding areas. Main interest is in the dashes, field events, and distance runs. Under the coaching of Mr. McGovern, the team has been outstanding, and during the 1954 season brought the championship to Woburn High. This year ' s team holds promise of retaining this great honor. 1st Row: L. Cuozzi, A. Dahlman, J. Johnson, Miss Higgins, M. Stearns (Captain), J. Madden, R. Abreau, S. Sarno, N. Wheaton. 2nd Row: P. The Girls ' Basketball Team practices on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. The first and second teams are made up of all classes in the school. Nine games were played and our girls gave the opponents a good battle each time. Miss Higgins deserves much credit for coaching the girls in playing the best possible game regardless of the score. Although it lacks height, it displays a great deal of spirit and team work. Paul Lennon, in his second year as captain, was a most able leader who seemed to inject courage and fight into his team mates. Much recognition is due to Mr. Flaherty, who led the team to the Northeastern Conference Champ¬ ionship in 1954. This year ' s team had a large following of loyal fans. 1st Row: N. Baseball is a popular sport at Wo¬ burn High School, and each year an exceptionally fine team is produced. Last year the team won the Northeast¬ ern Conference Championship and competed in the sectional playoff. They played Somerville at Braves Field. With many of the players returning this year, there is a good chance that we shall once again have a winning team. Credit is due to the team ' s able coach, Mr. McDonough, who has been so successful in his coaching assign¬ ment. 1st Row: T. Walsh, P. Lennon, Mr. McDonough, R. White, N. Cuozzi, P. The Football Team had an outstand¬ ing season. Although the captain, Nick Triantafilou, was unable to play be¬ cause of a neck injury, he worked with our excellent coaches, Mr. Dorrington, Mr. Corleto, Mr. White, and Mr. Mur¬ ray, building up and sparking the team to eight wins and one tie. These vic¬ tories brought us the Northeastern Conference Championship and the championship of Class C. Because of the team ' s sportsmanship and victory, the people of Woburn sponsored a drive to send the boys to Washington, D. C. Swampscott—7 . Woburn—20 Wakefield—12 .Woburn—20 Reading—13 . PERFECTION by Irma Lorraine Pearson Perfection, sages say, is God ' s alone, And like the well of life is but a dream, A golden pendant shining in the minds of men, A spur for those who strive for thoughts supreme. A line of lovely music or poetic phrase Transports a soul to wondrous realms profound. For one supernal second, timeless, full. The summit sought so long at last is found. Perhaps perfection thus can be attained. For who defines this goal beyond our reach? An ecstasy divine, a secret pure, The hope of youth, the lesson God must teach. y lot The publishing of our annual, The Innitou ' , is a big financial undertaking. Without the generous as¬ sistance of our sponsors and our advertisers, we could not possibly have a yearbook. The staff wishes to thank all of them for their contributions and re¬ quest our readers to patronize these people when¬ ever possible. In addition to financial backing, success de¬ pends upon good leadership. The Class of ' 55 has had that quality in the guidance of our advisers. Miss Margaret Burke, Miss Catherine Burke, and Miss Doris Lynch have been responsible for the suc¬ cess of our publication. We appreciate the many hours they have given to make our book possible.
