■n M • v:i: ■ . ISPlIlii ■ Ska Class cj foreword... As the years pass by for all of us, there is a time for looking backward and a time for looking forward. This is an historic year for the Class of Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-four, the one hundredth graduating class of Woburn High School. In this issue of the Innitou, the members of the class take pleasure in mingling their footsteps with the guiet sounds of those hoop- skirted ladies and the stiff-collared, tight-vested gentlemen of one hundred years ago. In looking backward, we cherish the ideals of our early educators and take inspiration from their concepts of courage and integrity. We are grateful to these good people of Woburn for molding and shaping our present and our future with the typical American ideals for improving the life values of its citizens and the general public welfare. In looking forward, we aspire to take our places as the future citizens of Woburn, to further advance ideas for progress in our school system, and to work to improve educational opportunities and facilities for the education of all youth in the sound principles of morality, true Americanism, and vocational life which we have been so privileged to receive. An unfortunate accident has taken him from our class and forced an interlude in his studies However, we remember his willing spirit and his cooperative attitude. We admire his courage in the face of adversity. Proudly, we dedicate THE INNITOU for 1954 to James Rodolfos, cur Class President. THE GROWTH OF OUR HIGH SCHOOL At its annual meeting in April, 1852, the town of Woburn voted to establish a high school, and placed the sum of twelve hundred dollars at the disposal of the Committee to enable it to carry that vote into execution. After examining various places, the Committee hired a room in Knight ' s building on Main Street and fitted it for the accommodation of the High School. A lease was obtained from Mr. Knight at the rent of one hundred dollars for one year, with the privilege of having the lease renewed for three years later, if the town so desired. A course of three years was selected because it was similar to those almost universally adopted in other places for a course of study. Such a program was planned and the school was opened on September 6, 1852, with Mr. William A. Stone as principal and with an enrollment of thirty-four students. In 1854, the town of Woburn voted to build a high school. This new high school, a wooden building, now forming the rear of the present Hanson School, was constructed at a cost of $11,701.99. The first graduating class held its exercises in this building December 8, 1855, after completing a three years ' course. This first graduating class had an enrollment of ten girls and one boy. During the year 1873-1874, the brick structure in the front was added, thereby completing Woburn ' s first high school. As Woburn ' s population continued to grow, Superintendent Emerson, in his report for 1897, first recommended the erection of a new high school. The School Committee finally requested the City Council in 1898, 1899, and 1900 to appropriate funds for the site and the building. The present site on Montvale Avenue was selected by the City Council, approved by the School Committee in 1900, and purchased in 1903. The ioundation was laid in 1905, and the construction was started on April 1, 1906. The building was formally opened on May 15, 1907. This new building provided additional opportunities for high school students and a wider service to the community. The old high school curriculum had catered to the tastes and training of those who would enter the various colleges and normal schools. The new program offered various courses which prepared students for vocations in the home and society, and for entrance into fields in connection with trade, commerce and manufacturing. After the passing of a few years, even the new building was found to be inadequate. In 1922, a portable annex was purchased from the adminis¬ trators of Saint Charles School, was added to the rear of the building, and housed two classrooms. This afforded temporary relief for the increased enrollment. Classes were taught here until a hurricane in 1925 destroyed this annex. These classes were then held in the auditorium with a cloth screen for a partition. In 1926, the first year students of the High School were obliged to take all their classes in the afternoon, as the school adopted the two-platoon system. Two wings were added to the central building and in September, 1930, the present building was opened for Senior and Junior High classes. The high school curriculum has progressed from a very narrow type of instruction in the classics, mathematics, and sciences to a very broad program of studies which still prepares students for advanced training in the universities and colleges, but also provides instruction and preparation for necessary progress in the various businesses and trades, and in modern homemaking and leisure time pursuits. Today, a wide program of studies and extra-curricula activities is offered in keeping with the interests, aptitudes, and abilities of all students in all fields of concentration. FIRST GRADUATING CLASS DECEMBER 10. 1855 Standing: Louise B. Horton, Mary S. Brackett, Elizabeth H. Collamore, Amelia S. Andrews Sitting: Florence K. Holden, Martha W. Persons, Harriet B. Nelson, Martha M. Hill (Valedictorian), Marriette Thompson Lower left: Anna E. French, Lower right: Abel T. Winn Oldest Living Alumnus of Woburn High Woburn High School has produced, over a period of one hundred years, many eminent men and women graduates. Perhaps there is no alumnus who carries the title of first more than a 95 year old man, Mr. Arthur U. Dickson of Clinton Street, Woburn. As far as we have been able to ascertain, he is the oldest living graduate of Woburn High School. After his graduation from secondary school in 1875, he pursued a course in civil engineering at Tufts College. He is at present the oldest living graduate of this college and the sole survivor of the class of 1878. After his college days, Mr. Dickson worked in an advertis¬ ing firm, an importing company, and as an operator on the first telephone line out of Boston to Natick, Framingham, and Worcester. He was also treasurer of Burdett College of which he is the oldest living graduate. Mr. Dickson retained a keen interest in farming throughout his life and, because he refuses to retire, he still raises and sells many varieties of plants and flowers. Because of his keen interest in civic affairs, he checked the daily progress of Route 128 as it was being built. This gained him an invitation to ride in the first car to travel the route with state officials. Congratulations to Mr. Arthur Dickson from the class of ' 54. Thomas Emerson 1862 - 1871 James I.. My message to you could be summed up in two words, Have Faith. The world which you are about to enter is confused and unsettled. The quotation These are the times which try men ' s souls could more fittingly apply today than it did when Thomas Paine uttered those words in Revolu¬ tionary times. You have seen your brothers, a little older than you, go to Korea and other far-off places; you have heard conflicting opinions of learned men over radio and tele¬ vision, and you have wondered about planning for your own immediate future. Your graduation from High School into this turbulent world would indeed look dim if it were not for the bright light of Faith, -— faith in yourself, faith in your country, and above all, faith in an eternal and all-loving God. That is the torch which we of an older generation are putting into your hands. Carry it always, and hold it high. Faith in yourself means believing in your own capabilities and developing them to their fullest extent. You were put into this world to perform some task; find out what it is, however big or however small, and you will be doing something that no other person could do as well. Faith in your country means believing that its greatness lies not in its size, its wealth, or its brilliant leaders, but rather in its principles of democracy laid down in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Faith in God means an assurance that Right will always prevail. We show our faith in Him by prayer. A man or woman is never so big as when he kneels before his Maker and asks for guidance. It is then that he knows that feeling of peace and confidence which no atheist or communist can ever know, — that feeling so well expressed by the poet, God ' s in His Heaven; all ' s right with the world. J. Frank Hassett Superintendent of Schools Zo the Class of 1954 Within the covers of this volume there exists a permanent, pictorial record of your days in the Woburn High School. The careful preparation, editing, and pub¬ lication of a work of such magnitude are tributes to the arduous labors of your fellow classmates on the staff and to the devotion of your faculty advisers. A full century has now elapsed since Woburn High School first met the challenge of providing for the current educational needs of the youth of the community. Tremendous changes have occurred in the economic, social, and educa¬ tional life of Woburn from the mid-nineteenth century era when needs were relatively simple and well defined. The complexity of an atomic age has presented multiple problems in second¬ ary education. The Woburn High School has devoted every effort to enable you to meet this challenge with a spirit of inquiry and d edication. The attitudes of your daily life, your interest in your fellow man, and your future service to God and country, will reflect in detailed measure, the extent to which your high School has prepared you for citizenship in a changing world. It is the hopeful wish of Woburn High that this book will be a permanent memory of those days, activities, and teachers that prepared you for active participation in preserving the American way of life. Signed: The Class of 1954 LETTER TO JUNIORS AND SOPHOMORES Dear Underclassmen, We, the Class of 1954, have greatly enjoyed and profited from these past years at Woburn High School. As we part now, we wish you, the future seniors, great prosperity and happiness for the remainder of your school days. Appreciate your excellent teachers and their efforts in helping you to develop into future citizens. They are most anxious to make your stay in high school profitable and enjoyable both socially and scholastically. Support your teams and your school by joining in the extra activities provided for you. Some of our most pleasant memories are the athletic, literary, and dramatic programs in which we parti¬ cipated. Above all remember that the best way to gain friends is to be a friend. Your classmates will enjoy your company if you will be considerate of others. Go out of your way a bit to make things pleasant for those with whom you come in contact. It is as easy to smile as it is to frown and it brings more pleasant results. Before we leave, we would like you to know that we appreciate your cooperation in all our under¬ takings, and for that may we say Thanks.
