TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1953 I wish to congratulate each member of the senior class on being graduated from High School. I congratulate also your devoted par ents upon whom you have brought honor with your graduation. Upon entering the Senior High School your graduation day may have seemed to be in the far future, but now that it is here, you will agree that the past three years were really three short years and passed so quickly, that you have hardly had time to think what you will do next. Those of us who have been directly or in¬ directly associated with formulating your high school education and training sincerely hope that we have given each of you a sound and complete secondary education. Your future success in business, or in the professions, is also one of our cherished wishes. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said The true test of civilization is not the census, nor the size of cities, nor the crops, but the kind of man the country turns out . Likewise we can say of our High School that the true test is not the number of students enrolled, nor the size of the building, nor the scope of the curriculum, but the kind of citizen that the school turns out. The High School program is designed only to prepare a boy or girl in how to learn. Each must be taught to think logically and construct¬ ively, but the main objective in high school is to teach one how to learn. After finishing high school the responsibility to continue the learn¬ ing process through work experiences or by higher education rests with the graduate him¬ self. A few months ago in an issue of your school newspaper, the Tanners News, I quoted the following: It. is not what you know that is important, but rather how you use what you know . Since reading your copy of the Tan¬ ners News I hope that you have given some thought to this quotation because it is true and so important in everyday living. In closing may I say Fear not that which lies ahead . The three years of schooling which you have just successfully completed qualifies you on a par with any American high school graduate. Take a little time to think about, and discuss with others, the kind of work you would like to try for your vocation in life. Once you have decided on your goal, then with (1) courage, (2) determination, and (3) a frequent prayer for Divine Guidance and Help, — you can ' t miss. If perchance you do miss on your first try, it will be only because you gave up in one of these three items when the going became tough. My best wishes to each of you. J. FRANK HASSETT Superintendent of Schools
