We have advanced from the so-called horse and buggy era through the different stages to the Diesel engines and the jet-propelled planes of the atomic age. In similar manner in travel through our educational career, we have journeyed from the problems of simple reading, writing, and arithmetic through the more advanced stages of the complicated processes of reasoning, interpreting and evaluating. Thus shall we continue to travel along life ' s highways meeting the chal¬ lenges of progress and the resulting adjustments to life. As we travel, may this book remind us that we have met and overcome the difficulties of the past with the same sense of humor and good judgment that we will maintain in fac¬ ing the future. Zable of Contents Mr. Blake Dedication Mr. Hassett Faculty Innitou Staff Seniors Poem, Song, Motto Activities Will Organizations Zo the Class of1953°. The task of organizing, preparing, and pub¬ lishing the Yearbook of the Class of 1953 of Woburn High School is one of considerable magnitude. Its success is a tribute to the fac¬ ulty advisers, the staff, and the class. In one sense a school Yearbook is merely a pictorial record of the senior year of a high school class. In a much greater sense it is a permanent memento of the associations, the friendships, the aspirations, the trials, and the dreams in a far too fleeting period of a most precious time of life. Although the class may never meet again in its entirety, this remem¬ brance of times past will enable you to retain the memory of your classmates with you al¬ ways. Just one hundred years ago, the first class was in attendance in the Woburn High School. What advances have taken place in secondary education since that day! The few pupils who were then subjected to the classroom work were privileged members of the community. Now the modern high school has become the great example of democracy in action, pro¬ viding for the educational needs of all Ameri¬ can youth. The doorway to knowledge stands open to all. There are no machinations, no ex¬ clusions, no contrived demands! In the successful completion of your high school career, you are the product of a great democratic institution. As we stand on the threshold of the second century in secondary education in the Woburn High School, may success attend your days and may you keep intact the ideals of your church, your home, and your school in the perilous times ahead- In this way you will attest to your faith in the American way. HENRY D. BLAKE Principal (d J Oar i icrine ' Dedication The class of 1953 takes great pride in dedicating this issue of The Innitou to an outstanding teacher, leader, friendly counselor, and class adviser. In all our endeavors she has given unstintingly to us of her time and encourage¬ ment. Through her efforts our scholastic and social affairs have been success¬ ful and satisfying. Truly we may say that whatever measure of achievement we have met in our senior year has been due in a large measure to the work of Miss Catherine E. Burke whom we greatly admire as both teacher and friend. TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1953 I wish to congratulate each member of the senior class on being graduated from High School. I congratulate also your devoted par ents upon whom you have brought honor with your graduation. Upon entering the Senior High School your graduation day may have seemed to be in the far future, but now that it is here, you will agree that the past three years were really three short years and passed so quickly, that you have hardly had time to think what you will do next. Those of us who have been directly or in¬ directly associated with formulating your high school education and training sincerely hope that we have given each of you a sound and complete secondary education. Your future success in business, or in the professions, is also one of our cherished wishes. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said The true test of civilization is not the census, nor the size of cities, nor the crops, but the kind of man the country turns out . Likewise we can say of our High School that the true test is not the number of students enrolled, nor the size of the building, nor the scope of the curriculum, but the kind of citizen that the school turns out. The High School program is designed only to prepare a boy or girl in how to learn. Each must be taught to think logically and construct¬ ively, but the main objective in high school is to teach one how to learn. After finishing high school the responsibility to continue the learn¬ ing process through work experiences or by higher education rests with the graduate him¬ self. A few months ago in an issue of your school newspaper, the Tanners News, I quoted the following: It. is not what you know that is important, but rather how you use what you know . Since reading your copy of the Tan¬ ners News I hope that you have given some thought to this quotation because it is true and so important in everyday living. In closing may I say Fear not that which lies ahead . The three years of schooling which you have just successfully completed qualifies you on a par with any American high school graduate. Take a little time to think about, and discuss with others, the kind of work you would like to try for your vocation in life. Once you have decided on your goal, then with (1) courage, (2) determination, and (3) a frequent prayer for Divine Guidance and Help, — you can ' t miss. If perchance you do miss on your first try, it will be only because you gave up in one of these three items when the going became tough. My best wishes to each of you. J. ITn flfcemoriam PAUL JAMES DONAHUE 1935 - 1951 A boy ' s will is the wind ' s will, And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts. — Longfellow Time, the healer of all things, will mend the aching heart and bring remembrances into the light of friendship shared and youthful dreams unfulfilled. We knew Paul not only as a mem¬ ber of our class but as a friendly, good-natured chum who always had time to help anyone m need. We shall always remember him as be¬ ing of us, although not with us, at this time. ass S totto The Credit We Get For Wisdom Is Measured By Our Success. Class zLoeni Class Song GRADUATION PRAYER LOOKING AHEAD O God our refuge, strength, and life, Teach us Thy wondrous way, That in this world of war and strife We may not go astray. Tune: America The Beautiful We ' re grateful to thee, Woburn High, For precepts we ' ll uphold. They ' ll guide and help us all the way, Give us Thy guidance from above, The light to lead us far Toward Thee, the source of life and love, As Wise Men toward a star. As future years unfold. Chorus: Then help us day by day to be, No matter where we are, A little more a part of Thee To cast our light afar. O Woburn High! O Woburn High! We bid farewell to thee. We look ahead with confidence, The class of ' 53. Audrey Hallberg We ' ll ne ' er forget thee Woburn High, Though we may wander far. We ' ll try our best to honor thee, No matter where we are.
