r r i uhmw i3y rite W0BI Swiiw 1 CZgu j Of Ipdbura foreword T E, the members of the Innitou Staff, have worked diligently that your yearbook might be a success. It is our sincere wish that as time passes on it will help you to recall many pleasant memories. ' Dedication Zo Miss Margaret JC. fturke OUR KIND AND CONSIDERATE SUPERVISOR r J ' , HE success of this annual book, “The Innitou, is due only to the many hours of work and careful guidance given by Miss Margaret L. Burke. In order to express our gratitude for her un¬ tiring efforts, we, the Class of Nineteen Hundred Forty Nine, proud¬ ly dedicate our issue to her, our most helpful instructor. J. Frank Hassett ' Y’OUR Superintendent of Schools congratulates you on comple¬ tion of your secondary school training. As you are now about to step out into the world to compete for employment or for admission to some school of higher learning, I would like to suggest that you give special attention to developing a favorable attitude towards Neatness, Pleasantness, Courtesy, Punc¬ tuality, and Sincerity. If you already possess each of these attributes, then strive to improve them. These attributes combined serve as the key to success in life, and with this key you will have no diffi¬ culty realizing your ambition. Should you ever find need in later years of my counsel or as¬ sistance, please consider me a friend awaiting to help you. J. Frank Hassett Superintendent of Schools Orel M. Bean TT is a pleasure as well as a privilege to extend friendly greetings and good wishes to you through your Yearbook as you graduate from Woburn High School. It is my sincere hope that you will not consider graduation as the end of your formal education but only the beginning. Our world needs trained minds and leadership. It is your opportunity to further your edu¬ cation that you may have a part in this leadership. Whether you have one talent or five, the assets and capacities that lie within you should be developed to their full extent. This is essential if you are to participate actively as an informed and responsible citizen in the solution of social, economic, and poli¬ tical problems of our community, state and nation. You have the courage, the imagination and energy of youth to attain this goal. Do not look for ease, comfort, and convenience, but believe in the right to work and to enjoy the products of your own labors and to receive awards according to merit. Success can be obtained in no other way. There can be no easy formula, no magic solution. Dare to be fine, true, and upright, for character will be a determining factor in the extent of your individual attainment. It has been a pleasure for us to help you and we look forward to any further service we may render. We hope you yourselves will find the joy of achievement worth working hard to attain. May the years ahead be happy ones. Orel M. Bean, Principal Zke faculty First Row — Myrta A. Hall. Zilpah F. Ranney. JVI. Maude Morton. Shipley W. Ricker, Orel M. Bean. Helen M. Gillespie. Among the honors that he claims are the “Massachusetts C ross-Country Championship” and the “New Eng¬ land Interscholastic Championship”, the greatest award that can be given to a high school runner. In the Boston Garden Ree again won fame when he broke the mile record. Kee RICHARD FOWLE Kaw R AW — The only runner who beat Ree in 49, was always on his brother ' s heels. Raw became the Pil¬ grim Meet Champion by breaking a record set by his brother a week earlier in a dual meet. Unfortunately he sprained his ankle during practice and was handicapped for the rest of the season. He placed fourth in the State Meet and did exceptionally well to place seventh in the New England Meet. Raw broke the thousand yard record on the same day that Ree broke the mile record. ROBERT FOWLE YEARBOOK M.TRJANTAFILOU H. MULRENAN DEMOCRACY CONTEST Class Poem THE LIGHTHOUSE It stands above the foam-crowned reef — A warning ' gainst the dangers there. The sturdy ships regard its beam As storm clouds gather in the air. The wildest gale disturbs it not; The lashing waves lash but in vain. Its base of strongest rock contrived Holds firm the tower in wind and rain. We with our base of strongest rock In knowledge set must truth release — Must throw ' cross storm-swept skies our light To guide the world to lasting peace. Donald Bryant Pearson Class Song (Tune: Let Ale Call You Sweetheart) Now our years are over here at Woburn High; To our friends and teachers we must say good-bye, In our hearts well cherish all your memories dear; They will make you nearer every passing year. In the school of life we’ll now our names enroll, And each one will journey toward a different goal, Even though the tides of life will Bear us far, May your golden precepts be our guiding star. Zo Zke future Seniors JSJow that we are coming up for pardon, our deepest sympathies are with you who must finish your sentence. However, don’t be jealous because you, too, will rate consideration when you come before the board next year. That is, if you remain on good behavior. Before we leave we’ll do one big favor. We’ll put in a word for you with all the teachers. In doing this we ' ll ask them to keep a stern hand on your fu¬ ture doings and to make your senior year as difficult as possible. That is, if you wish us to do so. We wouldn’t want to violate our probation by using your name in vain. And when we are gone, think only this of us; that there is one bad influ¬ ence fled from your life. The Class of ’49. Zo Zhe Suture juniors A T last you .have passed your initiation period in this established institution of knowledge. We, your forefathers, about to be released for good be¬ havior feel that you are sadly in need of some expert advice founded on the lessons learned in the school of experience. As sophomores, yours has been the task of suffering all the trials of the lowly, and you have borne your burden nobly. Now you are about to be pro¬ moted and one year of your sentence will be over. Take up the cudgel next year. Be not the dumb-driven beasts you seem — you can’t be. Rise up! Throw off the yoke of slavery. Remember that this country was founded on independence and the right of free speech. Do not sacrifice those ideals, and mark well that tire more you use them, the more adept you will become. When you are called upon by the upper classmen to tame your wild ideas, assert your¬ selves. This, dear Juniors, is the advice of your elder brothers. Follow it and you’ll be sorry. The Class of ' 49. SOPHOMORE BOYS SOPHOMORE GIRLS Appreciation The Innitou Staff takes this opportunity to ex¬ press its thanks to everyone who has helped in any way to make this book a success.
