It is discovering anew the diversity of nature and the unity of being. Look around, Leaves are brown, And the sky Is a hazy shade of winter. Awareness is discovering Where we are headed; Yet it is also discovering life As it is today. It is slowing our journey to a Pace at which we can Appreciate the scenery. 8 Look arouiK The grass is high The fields are ript It’s the springtime of my life It is learning to become Sensitive to others; To experience their moods, Thoughts and feelings. It is discovering their being As we do our own. Awareness is stretching the range of Our eyes, our ears, and our souls. It is awakening to beauty everywhere, In a song, In a flower, In another life. 10 11 12 It is expanding our being so that we may suffer And know tragedy, But that we may also experience the grandeur of life. It is taking the time to look, And listen, And comprehend The Year 15 16 For Some, A New Beginning A New Schoo Year For Others, Back To The Grind 17 . . . A Ple r' c Baby oil, automobile tires, paper tigers, and more than 750 alumni joined the ranks of the students to make Homecoming 1970. Open houses in all university buildings, alumni rallies, luncheons, receptions, and a fantastic Friday night concert by Judy Col- lins, crowded the beautiful October week- end. An innovation to the traditional, the fraternities and sororities and residence halls combined forces to construct their displays, most of which dealt with ways to construe the nickname of the Findlay Oilers. During the halftime of the Tiger pounce over the Oilers, Senior Mary Dillard was crowned queen, while Juniors Cathy Heller and Judy Merkle comprised her court. Long hours of hard work on the displays, paid off when Phi Mu Delta and Delta Gamma and Tower and North Halls captured first places in their respective divisions. As the alums re- visited their “old spots,” no doubt they won- dered how it all could have changed! 18 'or Peace: Homecoming 19 We’ve Seen Both Sides Now Through Judy Collins 21 Journey Intx The University Theatre’s first pro- duction of the season was The Night Thoreau Spent In Jail, written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, and hailed as being “among the most brilliant intellectual stimulants of a decade” and “passionately pertinent to our times and our problems.” James Cleveland directed this fine performance, which brought to light not only new ideas in theatre, but also new freshman talent as well. The drama, premiered only the previous April at Ohio State University, con- cerns Henry David Thoreau's histori- cal decision to elect a jail sentence over a two dollar tax that supported the Mexican-American War; a war he declared immoral. David J. An- derson portrayed Thoreau, supported by an able cast. 22 nnual Dads Day Mud Bowl No sooner had a month passed since Ilome- aming than another swarm of parents and lums returned to campus to observe the urteenth annual Dads Day weekend, No- ember 13-15. To add variety to the football eekend, the University Theatre presented erformances of “The Night Thoreau Spent Jail,” the Wittenberg Symphony Orches- •a gave a concert, and Weaver Chapel was ie scene of the John Bennett Ham Memo- al Concert. New officers to head the opera- ons of the University Dads’ Association, hich has raised more than $312,000 to ipport the educational programs of Witten- ;rg since 1957, were elected at their annual eeting. Not breaking with the typical pat- rn of miserable weather for the Dads’ Day une, Witt’s Tigers clashed with Ashland llege in the seemingly annual Mud Bowl. i the turf, the Syncopates performed their ual tricks, ankle deep in mud and grass. 25 26 We Are, But More Than That . . . 27 is 29 Christmas Celebration 30 become Finals’ Study Breaks 31 Winter and Wittenberg Stops 33 ',.v m HHi V-. Hamma School of Theology School of Community Education President: Frederick K. Wentz: Litt.: Thiel College. Hamma School of Theology understands itself as a Christian community who primary purpose is the preparation of faithful and competent ministers. To this end, Ilamma has sought to be consciously and critically experimental bo within and without its walls. A student now spends six of his sixteen terms in fie work and is encouraged to develop new contexts for new definitions of what it meat to minister. A recently approved degree is the Master of Theological Studies. This two year pi- gram allows those students with reservations as to their commitment to the church formalized ministry an experimental exposure to a church vocation. Dean: Adrian E. Patmos; M.A.. The Tigers opened their defense of the Ohio Con- ference championship in a non-conference game against California St. of Pennsylvania. The Tigers proved to be too much for California as they crushed them 61-0 and set a new school record for fewest yards allowed an opponent; 0 net yards. Central St. was the first home game and was sup- posed to be a strong team. The Tigers hit them with 33 points in the second period to keep the Maraud- ers under control. Otterbein was the first conference team played, who was completely outclassed and out-maneuvered by the stronger Tigers. The 76-7 score was the biggest Tiger victory in almost 10 years. Denison was a greater challenge since the Tigers did not have the services of their great quarterback, Rocky Alt. The Tigers defense held strong as the offense put 30 points on the board for an easy 30-0 victory. 142 1970 Tiger Schedule: wu OPP. 61 California State 0 40 Central State 8 76 Otterbein 7 30 Denison 0 48 Findlay 0 21 Baldwin-Wallace 14 35 Ohio Wesleyan 0 35 Wooster 0 14 Ashland 6 The 1970 Homecoming opponent was Findlay. The game was the first meeting of the two schools since 1927. The Tigers made short work of the Oilers, running up 43 points while holding the opposition scoreless. Baldwin-Wallace, the Tigers’ arch rival, was to provide the toughest opposition of the season. Wit- tenberg took an early 14-0 lead, but were unable to hold onto it as the Yellow Jackets put on a surge and tied the game 14-14. A fourth quarter touch- down provided the Tigers with all the points they needed in a 21-14 victory. Denny Yontz rocs high into the air in an attempt to block a Findlay punt. M3 Head coach Dave Maurer contemplates his next move as he guides the Tigers to their second straight undefeated season. Junior Reed Vordenberg gives an example of his beautiful pu: ing form. The Tiger seniors got their revenge against Ohio Wesleyan for the defeat the Bishops handed the Tigers in 1967. The defense posted another shutout in a lop- sided 35-0 victory. The Wooster Scots were undefeated for the first time since 1920 when the Tigers came to town. Everybody at Wooster was up and ready for the big challenge. After a close first half, the Tigers pulled away in the second half to shock the Wooster fans with an impressive 35-0 victory and their fifth shutout of the season. Darryl Herring streaks around the end for a big gain against Findlay. t The Tiger defense, the best in the works, works as a team to shut off the Find- lay offense. A tired offense takes a break as the defense goes to work to stop the opposition. 145 Ashland came to Springfield on a snowy Novem- ber afternoon with hopes of upsetting the powerful Tigers. It looked as if they might when Ashland had the ball for the first time and broke a 72 yard run up the middle for a touchdown. It was the first time all season the Tigers had trailed in a game. Coach Dave Maurer’s club had plenty of spirit and came back to post a 14-6 victory. The Tigers second straight undefeated season and a string of twenty consecutive victories was shattered when it was revealed by the school, that we had played an ineligible player. It was an honest mistake, but it cost the Tigers all nine victories. The Otterbein Cardinals offense is set to meet the Tiger defenders as soon as the ball snapped. m$gr Syncopates The Syncopates welcome Tiger defenseman Larry Williams before a game. The crowd greets the Tigers as they come onto the field to meet the Findlay Oilers. 148 Cross Country The cross country team, captained by John Zerkles and Steve Burns, lost all their meets this season due to team injuries.
