A college is something given to us. It is our heritage from the years gone by and from thousands of hands who gave us what we cherish today A college is something that we pass on to the generations to follow us, a heritage made better because we added our best to it. In conspicuous measure we at Wittenberg enjoy both these high privileges. We are rich in our inheritance: we are richer still that we may hand it over, enhanced, to those who will come after us. For both we give abundant thanks. -C. C. STOUGHTON DR. CLARENCE CHARLES STOUGHTON President of Wittenberg College MRS. STOUGHTON In 1949 Dr. Clarence C. Stough- ton became the eighth president of Wittenberg College, succeed- ing Dr. Rees E. Tulloss. The new president was a former president of Wagner College and a widely recognized lay leader of the United Lutheran Church. Since that time Dr. Stoughton's personality and ability have led Wittenberg to an enviable posi- tion among Christian Colleges in America. 17
