I 19 5 8 2 WITTENBERGER WITTENBERG COLLEGE SPRINGFIELD, OHIO VOLUME 42 TSVICOAM K. FARISH 4577 W. NATIONAL ROAD SPRINGFIELD, OHIO 3 4 EDITOR Gary Williamson ASSOCIATE EDITOR Donna Gnagey PHOTOGRAPHY EDITOR Richard Ballentine 5 Here is Wittenberg. A Tradition . . . the impress of her past . . . symbolized in the red-brown tower of Reci. A Solemnity ... a surrounding quiet. . . found in the rich green foliage of Spring. A Purpose . . . enriching ... as noble as the upward reaching trees. A Gaiety . . . the collegiate ... a bright spot of sun- light on the somber leaves. This is Wittenberg . . . this . . . and more . . . .. ... . ., V ' 1 - .. , jn WITTENBERG COLLEGE 1145 FOUNDED 8 . . . a memory . . . the living past upon which the future rests . . . important . . . trivial . . . changing . . . unchanged . . . repeated every generation ... . never quite the same ... all part of college life . . . part of Wittenberg . . . 9 10 A SOLEMNITY ... . . . the quiet... a dignity . .. the search for one's self ... for God ... for knowl- edge . . . the refreshing calm ... a stillness . . . concealing . . . revealing . . . the elusive Truth . . . it's here . . . it's part of Wittenberg . . . II t 12 A PURPOSE ... . . . educating . . . enriching . . . pre- paring . . . the basis for a college. Here there is more . . . developing . . . build- ing . . . Christian lives for service . . . this is the character of Wittenberg . . . 13 A GAIETY ... . . . the brightness of youth . . . the spirit of fun ... in the countless ways of collegians . . . ribald . . . sophis- ticated . . . original . . . typical ... in the way of all students . . . this is part of Wittenberg . . . 15 A college is something given to us. It is our heritage from the years gone by and from thousands of hands who gave us what we cherish today A college is something that we pass on to the generations to follow us, a heritage made better because we added our best to it. In conspicuous measure we at Wittenberg enjoy both these high privileges. We are rich in our inheritance: we are richer still that we may hand it over, enhanced, to those who will come after us. For both we give abundant thanks. -C. C. STOUGHTON DR. CLARENCE CHARLES STOUGHTON President of Wittenberg College MRS. STOUGHTON In 1949 Dr. Clarence C. Stough- ton became the eighth president of Wittenberg College, succeed- ing Dr. Rees E. Tulloss. The new president was a former president of Wagner College and a widely recognized lay leader of the United Lutheran Church. Since that time Dr. Stoughton's personality and ability have led Wittenberg to an enviable posi- tion among Christian Colleges in America. 17 DR. W. EMERSON RECK Vice President and General Secretary DR. ROLAND C. MATTHIES Vice President and Treasurer JOHN N. STAUFFER Dean of the College Even as we have been fortunate in Dean Nystrom's service, we are blessed in Dr. Stauffer. With these words Dr. Stoughton an- nounced the retirement of Wendell C. Nystrom as Dean of the College and the promotion of Dr. John N. Stauffer as his successor. We are gratefully aware of Dean Nystrom's devoted service to our col- lege even as we recognize the proven ability of his successor. Dean Stauffer. 19 DR. WENDELL C. We are proud of our pledge, Carla Sivadon, chosen Freshman Queen, and of Carol Boyer and Rosaleen Drumel for their parts in The King and I. We were honored to have Alma Mater, sister Ann Van Meter, living in our house. We enjoyed looking at the awards which President Steph brought back with her from the national A D Pi convention in Nassau last summer. Christmas time brought singing with the Lambda Chi's. After finals the next big event was the Sweetheart Dance at the Springfield Country Club, and to round out a full year, our informal dance in May. 1019 N. Twenty-seven fine pledges, the annual Apple Polishing Party (right before finals!), and the long-awaited formals made it an exciting year. Formal serenades were numerous as several Alpha Xi's became the proud bearers of shiny fraternity pins and sparkling diamonds. Everyone was delighted when Dottie Nussbaum became Miss Wittenberger of 1957 and Jan Gonter reigned as Crescent Queen of Lambda Chi Alpha. Time went quickly. Soon Initiation, Parents' Weekend, and the traditional Senior Breakfast brought to a close another successful year for Alpha Xi Delta. 203 W. College Ave. First row: Vaughan, Fisher, Wilton, Elbert. Fall flew by with Homecoming, the pledge dance, and our winter formal, Carol in Gold. We especially enjoyed The King and I with Lucy Musser as a student director. Christmas time brought the D.Z.'s and Lambda Chi's together to fix toys and dress dolls for Inner Mission. The spring work session to raise money for our national philanthropy was fun for the whole chapter. A busy and fun-filled semester was highlighted by initiation, the annual bridge tournament, the Sing, the spring formal, and ended with the Goop Dinner and Senior Banquet. Following pledging were the exciting days of Homecoming displays—our theme being, We are holding our line for victory. The eventful year brought forth two pledge dances; one given in honor of the new pledges and the other given in honor of the actives, and our Founders' Day Banquet with our most helpful alums at the Rustic Inn. Our annual orphan's Christ- mas party at the chapter house and the memorable Christmas formal at the Shawnee Hotel were two events which made our Christmas very happy. The brothers started the third year at 105 W. Mc- Creight with a successful rush program. In October the display brought Alpha Gamma another first-place trophy in the Homecoming competition. The new Mascot, Tuxedo I, was acquired in the fall. Tux, a huge St. Bernard, is popular with everyone, but its favorite is the Beta's wonderful cook, Annie. Alpha Gamma athletes, led by all-Ohio basketballer Terry Deems, kept bringing home laurels for Wittenberg and the chapter. THE MARCHING BAND The Wittenberg Marching Band, under the direction of Robert C. Dolbeer, provided us with a fresh and dif- ferent routine during intermissions a t each football game. Led down the field by high- stepping drum major Bob Roberts, the 46 members of the group aided tremendously in spurring both crowd and team to new heights of enthusiasm. JOHN CHOWNING COLLEGIATES The Collegiates formed in the fall of 1956 by way of a get-together in a crowded practice room of the School of Music. They began to play for dances on campus and in the Springfield area, with addition of a Wittenberg alumnus on tenor sax. The summer of 1957 the trio spent thirteen weeks in a restaurant on the east coast, and just before re- turning to school went to New York to record on L.P. record at the RCA Victor studios. George lindamood, John Chov ning, Dove Arnold. WOODY HERMAN Woody Herman and his Third Herd jazz band invaded the Field House on October 25 for a joint concert and dance program. The 16-piece band played to an enthusiastic audience, iheir selections ranging from rhythm and blues to modern jazz with a Dixie- land beat. Invitations were extended to include area residents and students of district colleges as well as Wittenbergers. 183 STUDENT SENATE Student Senate President W. Again mentored by Bill Edwards, the Crimson compiled a record of 7-2-0, garnering for them a share of the Ohio Conference title with Denison, and a high regard in Midwest grid circles. Wittenberg received additional laurels when Ron Lancaster, Tom Kurth, and Earl Fry were placed on the All-Conference team. A sell-out crowd filled Tiger Stadium for the home and season opener with Akron in what proved to be a bigger game than was anticipated. A first quarter safety decided the victor as the Tigers succumbed, 7-9. Led offensively by Bellisari and Weiss, the Tigers copped their first win by blanking Marietta, 27-0. The Lutherans traveled to Findley to pull a major upset by completely outplaying Heidelberg, 34-6. Before a Homecoming throng of over 5,000, the Tigers again foiled the experts by taking Muskingum into camp by a 33-7 tally. Mount Union was the next victim of the rolling Tigers, falling 51-7. Kasunick displayed phenomenal running by grounding out 135 yards, averaging 16.9 yards per carry. Wittenberg visited Dixie the following week, and continued to roll, dumping Washington and Lee, 61-26. Sophomore standouts Murphy and Smith paced the Tiger offensive machine. Murphy tallied four times, and Smith ran up a total of 140 yards in 12 carries. Wittenberg went all-out to down a fired-up Wooster aggregation, 19-13, for their sixth victory in succession. A Dad's Day crowd witnessed Yoder crash over from the one-foot line for the decisive score. Wittenberg engaged traditional rival Ohio Wesleyan for a conference tie and came out of a rugged struggle as 20-13 victor. The win marked the first over the Bishops since 1929, and it returned the Old Indian Skull to the Wittenberg campus. Having concluded the conference season, the Tigers visited Western Kentucky and closed the year with a 28-13 defeat at the hands of the Hilltoppers. A hard-earned lift but it was worth if. Tony Wilcox, Terry Deerm, Bernie Thompson, Eldon Miller, Tony Vedova, Coach Ray Mears. The 1957-58 Tiger quintet, in addition to establishing the most impressive record in several decades of Wit- tenberg basketball, 19-3, afforded Crimson supporters excitement and surprises throughout the campaign. Under the able leadership of Ray Mears, in his third year as Wittenberg coach, the Tigers went into the final Ohio Conference contest with Akron sporting a clean conference slate, and proud of a successful trip to the East over the holidays. The Wittenberg contingent, none of which was a senior, promises big things to come in the future. Although fourth in the nation defensively, the victorious campaign must olse be attributed to an offensive punch which garnered as many as 105 markers in a game against Marietta, and a consistent winning margin of thirty or forty points. Balanced scoring, the fast break, and a definite display of teamwork highlighted the season, as the Tigers continued their home victory skein over two seasons. Arch rival Capital again proved a match for the Crimson in each of two engagements. In the first encounter at Columbus, Wittenberg failed to establish a comfortable lead until late in the second quarter. The return bout at the Field House saw the Tigers enjoy two leads. The first—a 2-0 margin—and the second a 61-60 advantage to end the game. At Akron, the Tiger powerhouse faltered enough to enable the Zippers to cop a 46-49 victory, the conference crown, and a berth in the N.C.A.A. small college playoffs. No other title would be more appropriate for this year's Tigers, the team. As a team, the Tigers ranked fourth in total team defense in the nation, and were rated as one of the top twenty small college contingents. Individual honors went to Terry Deems who was selected most valuable player in the conference. He is the sec- ond junior in the history of the conference to receive this honor. 213 first row: Wilcox, Deems. Coach A ears. Thomp- son, Miller, Vcdova. Second row: Fisher, Rader, Weiss, Bramc. The team started the season with many new recruits and several veterans. The team, led by captain Earl Fry, lost its first two matches by close decisions. Wittenberg then earned its only win of the year defeating Denison in their second meeting of the year. Due to injuries and many difficulties the team strength was weakened. The next four matches were lost to very good teams. Wittenberg sent four men to the con- ference meet at Denison, but only Don Kovach reached the semi-finals. Coach George Davis is looking for a better season next year with the team only losing heavyweight Earl Fry. The other members of this year's team were Gene Harper, 123; John Marzoff, 130; Tom Herr and Sid Stein, 137; Don Davis and George Eastland, 147; Paul Hofflan3 and Bob Kinsey, 157; Dick Yurich, 167; and Don Kovach, 177. 223 GOLF Coach Ness, Grothc, Shultz, Gonyard, Wiese, Malles, Ford, Kazmaier, Textor. Last year's top four men were Jerry Lorentz, Sig Dietrich, Roger Imhoff, and Ed Ullery, with five other men, Dave Shargel, Bob Webb, Larry McCoy and Clint Chu, and Jim Marsha battling it out for 5 and 6 positions in singles.
