Text from Pages 1 - 239 of the 1951 volume: “
Witteriberger aberg College Ohio Robert Weiskotten Robert Anderson i % V iiJsRJHHH The colorful cover of this hook carries the label “1951 Wittenberger, Volume 35.” The format, beginning with that cover and carrying through all 224 pages, leans toward the mod- ern trend in design —and so underscores “1951.” However, we realize that it is still a yearbook and, as such, will eventually take its chronological place between Volumes 34 and 36 in the file of Wittenberg annuals. It is merely one volume in the overall picture. It is not a catalogue; it is not a directory. It is a part of the recorded pictorial history of Wittenberg as seen through the eyes of its students, show- ing the gradual physical and philosophical changes that make a campus alive and posi- tive. And to depict The Wittenberg College of 1951 we have used both familiar views with the traditional flavor of Wittenberg, and new perspectives in keeping with a newer and more progressive campus. Volume 35 is you, the Wittenberg students, and your part in the growth of Wittenberg. ♦ 1 | i V TABLE OF CONTENTS Section 1 . . . Hail to the seniors for the promise of their lives, enriched by the deepening experience of college years. Here is potential power waiting to be delivered, in homes, industry, schools, churches, everywhere in the life of the nation. Nail to the seniors for what they have con- tributed to Wittenberg during their days here —a new idea here, a warmer enthusi- asm there, affection, loyalty, and strength. 1 lail to the seniors, ambassadors of Witten- berg wherever they go. For in their achieve- ments and in their contributions, men will judge their Alma Mater. As they are strong and true and good, men will see the strength and the truth and the virtue of Wittenlrerg. Hail to the seniors. We do not say good-by. With them we stand bidding good morning to the new day that is theirs and rejoicing with them in the opportunities that await them. Miss Charlotte Teeter reigned as Homecoming Queen dur- ing the Homecoming Game. Miss Vivian Held (left) and Miss Patricia Kalback (right), were her attendants. Once again rain and snow descend- ed on the Wittenberg homecoming festivities, but it failed to dampen the spirits of the celebrants, or to damage the large and intricate dec- orations. The new ruling excluding motions from the sorority displays resulted in greater ingenuity, and Alpha Delta Pi, sorority winner for the second consecutive year, won the cup with an intriguing display that was highlighted at night by lu- minous paint. The Dorm League won the fraternity trophy with the amazingly realistic tiger shown in their display. m 84 Homecoming Decorations .cnsva WE3 u©a N0S1N30 SARISTI Directed for the third consecutive year by a new head coach, Wittenberg football endeavours finally became a winning reality in 1950 as the team compiled its best re- cord in ten years. More important than the heartening re- cord. however, was the return of a spirit and will to win that fostered some of the finest Tiger football seen in a decade. Ralph E. “Tom Ness, who took over the reins of head coach and athletic director during the summer, brought with him an enviable coaching record from Lake- wood High School in Cleveland. An exponent of the T- formation and a drill-master in fundamentals of football, he began the job of revitalizing a team which had won but three games in the past two years. Long hours of prac- tice and informal “skull sessions were to produce later results, both in the record l ook and in the minds of the patient Tiger fans. Opening at home under the lights, the Lutherans dis- played a versatile attack, sparked by the passing of 11am- mond and the running of Varble, but a spotty defense enabled Ohio Northern to slip past, 11-11. An optimistic squad traveled to Obcrlin one week later, and battled the Yoemen on even terms for the first half. A Hood of last half touchdowns by Obcrlin proved too much for the Tigers, however, and the 32-7 route to renew memories of past years. But on Migration Day a raging Wittenberg team trampled Capital S2-0, to register the second highest score in the history of the college. Seven men crossed the Capital goal line. Bill Varble leading the way with three tallies. In one of the hardest battles ever fought in the Wittenberg stadium, the Lutherans outplayed Ohio State's Junior Varsity for three quarters, only to succumb to superior numl ers in the final quarter, 20- I I. Oddly enough, this, the third loss of the season, proved to be the turning point for the Tigers. The Marietta Pioneers provided little opposition for the fired-up team, and with Varble and Popko teaming up for most of the yards gained. Wittenberg scored its second victory of the sea- son, 34-6. Seemingly used to their wining ways, the Tig- ers went down to (Georgetown and promptly ground out a decisive 28-6 win over the 1 loyas. 1 lomecoming saw the revitalized Lutherans score their fourth victory of the season, a 19-0 win over Denison, marking the first shut- out in 32 contests for the Big Bed. Coming from behind in the final four minutes, Ohio Weslyan took advantage of a Tiger gamble which failed, and converted its only score to gain a 7-7 tie with the Lutherans. Unable to stand the strain of the terrific uphill battle. Wittenlx-rg Ixnved to Valparaiso in the final game of the season. Freshman Football Under the direction of Bernie Allison the Wittenberg Cubs white-washed their first two opponents and tied the third, showing an ability that promises to strengthen the varsity. With halfback Don Henderson taking scor- ing honors with three touchdowns, the Cubs completely out-classed the Kenyon junior varsity at Cambier, 50-0. Quarter- back George Reasch, completing 17 out of 28 passes in the first two Cub games, sparked the freshmen to a 25-0 victory over the Otterbein freshmen. In the final game, the Cubs came from behind to tie the Ohio Wesleyan Baby Bishops 13-13. Sixteen men were awarded numerals at the annual football banquet. Continuing the “new look in Wittenberg athletics by a successful football season, the 1950-1951 bas- ketball squad ended a twenty game schedule with an impressive 12-6 collegiate record, plus two loss- es to the Dayton General Motors Air Gems. Coach Howard Red” Maurer had but four lettermen back from last year's mediocre team, two of whom graduated at mid-year. Since the average height of the squad barely reached six feet, intensive prac- tice sessions stressed a fast break and accuracy. Gene Cornwell Perk Robins Bill Roeth For the first time since 1947, the Tigers won their opening game, easily defeating Otterbein, 75-62. The first road trip proved encouraging for the Lu- therans. as they beat Hiram, 92-58, and Western Reserve. 96-87, setting a new Wittenberg scoring record in both games. Flaying their third game in as many nights, the Tigers dropped their first game to Case, 73-70. A heartbreaking loss to the Air Gems from Dayton’s General Motors, 63-61. raised many an eyebrow, for the highly touted industrial team was an overwhelming favorite. Christmas vacation saw a win over Mount Union, 62-53, and a loss, the second of the season to the Air Gems, 66-52. Undefeated Obcrlin was the vic- tim of the third straight Ohio Conference win for the Lutherans; Denison made it four in a row for the high Hying Tigers. 56-46. After a ragged 59-53 win over Ohio State’s Junior Varsity, Wittenberg defeated Otterbein. 66-54, to tie Muskingum for conference leadership; graduating seniors Rill Roeth and Gene Cornwell, one-two in scoring for the season, playing their last game for the Cardinal and Cream. Premonitions of unhappier days ahead appeared as the Tigers, obviously miss- ing the artistry of the two veterans, dropped their first conference tilt. 65-61, to Marietta. A visiting Kentucky Wesleyan team was defeated, 80-78, bu! I leidelberg beat the Lutherans, 82-79. Muskingum gave the Tigers an exhibition of near- perfect basketball, 82-63, but they came back to defeat Denison, 57-56, and Capital. 79-60.
