Muhlenberg College AS the preface tells the purpose of a hook, so Dr. Tulloss defines the purpose of Wittenberg College in our hook of Philosophy. It is up to him ro see that the hook will he well written, or the purpose ful- filled. This he does with amazingly fine results. A scholar himself, our president takes pride in giving honor to those who deserve it and encouraging it al- ways. Supplementing the many other characteristics he possesses, he is a good business man, which is made evident in the financial security Wittenberg enjoys. With pride and pleasure we say “Yes, that distinguish- ed man is our President”. ■ Page Twelve DEAN c:. Ci. SHATZKR A. B.. A. M.. Sc. D. DEAN MISS IMMELL becomes an important part of a textbook of Philosophy because of her wise counsel and the interest she has in every phase of college. Our Dean is highly respected by the many women she personally contacts each year. WITTENBERG students have for twelve years enjoyed work under Dean Pershing. For the last five years the men on campus have profited by his advise and appreciated his under- standing. With ease he adds to our Philosophy book. Dean c. g. shatzer. a.b., A.M., Sc.D., in his role as dean of college may be likened to the Table of Content, for under his skillful guidance we are directed to every part of the book or every department of the college. His congeniality immedi- ately wins him friendship with every- one he meets. His students will tell you it is impossible to leave his classes without feeling the richer for having known the man as well as the teacher. OF AN RUTH IMMELL A.B., M.A. DEAN B. H. After six straight setbacks, the Tigers knocked off two in a row. The consecutive triumphs may be partly attributed to an outbrust of spirit on the part of the students, when they began staging fiery “pep rallies . Despite their third pep meeting , the students could not instill the gridders with enough umph to capture the season's final. An innovation in Wittenberg’s football me- morials was brought in at the close of the 19 7 season in the form of choosing the team’s most valuable player and inscribing his name on a plaque. Paul Norman, guard, received the honor this year, in addition to holding a spot on the All-Ohio conference second team. Boyd Abrams and Gil Dickerhoof were given honorable men- tions in the backfield. First Ron. COACH STOBBS. PETRI, R.JNKIN, BLACK- Bl RN, HALL. DICKERHOOF, TO ICO. J. KOCH. ABRAMS Second Row PERETTI. Page Forty-nine FOOTBALL DAYTON OUTSUBSTITUTED by a powerful Dayton eleven, Wittenberg’s footballers went down to defeat in their initial contest of the season here in a night game. Sept. 24, 28—7. Boyd Abrams made the only Wittenberg touchdown on a long run, but he emerged from the skirmish badly injured. KALAMAZOO COMING as a new opponent on Wittenberg’s schedule and with an enviable record, Kalamazoo turned the team back with a 7—0 score. Outplaying their opponents throughout the contest the Lutheran’s just didn’t possess the punch to put the ball across the goal line, and lost the second game of the season on their home field, October 2. DENISON PLAYING their first game away from home. Wittenberg met Denison’s Big Red in a night game. October 8. The, Witten- berg team played heads-up foot- ball, but bowed to a stronger team 20—7. Kissell made a beautiful return of a punt to score the only touchdown for Wittenberg. Fifty MARIETTA MARIETTA’S strong aerial attack proved too much for he crippled Stobbsmen as they set Wittenberg back for the fourth straight time in a confer- ence night game at Marietta, Dctober 15, 12—6. Both elevens entered the fray with three con- secutive losses behind them. MUSKINGUM FEATURED by Dick Peter’s 99- yard run after intercepting a Muskie pass, Wittenberg’s home- coming game with Muskingum, October 25, resulted in the Lutheran’s fifth straight setback and the third of an Ohio con- ference eleven, 27 13. Muskin- gum applied a bewildering razzle- dazzle attack on the Stobbsmen. OBERLIN TDADLY crippled and lacking spirit Wittenberg’s gridders left for Oberlin and came back in worse spirits, for the Yeomen administered a 13—0 lacing to the Tigers, October 30. Marty Berthold starred for Oberlin. Pane Fifty-mu: BOWLING GREEN INSPIRED by a heated student “pep rally , sponsored by themselves, Wittenberg’s foot- ballers went over to Bowling Green, November 6, and came back after bowling the Bee Gees over the green, 13—0. to tell of their initial victory of the season after six consecutive losses. Abrams returned to the line-up to score a touchdown, as «.lid Dickerhoof. KENYON ANOTHER pep rally and what a victory followed. Wittenberg walloped Kenyon, 66 0. here in an Ohio confer- ence contest, Novenber 13, to chalk up their second triumph in succession. Abrams, Hall. Lisak, Peter, and Dickerhoof all made one or more touchdowns. HEIDELBERG A N under-rated Heidelberg team brought the curtain down on the Lutheran’s football season, at Tiffin, handing them a 6 0 defeat. Scoring in the first period the Student Prince’s held to their slim lead through the remainder of the game. Page Fi ty-tuo FRESHMEN FOOTBALL GI: I I INCi a taste of varsity football comes as a regular feature to the freshman footballers. Coached in the fundamentals of varsity play these yearlings content themselves, often too frequently, by workouts with the varsity team. Thus giving the varsity practice and getting toughened up for Ohio Confer- ence, competition falls to the lot of the freshman. This year’s squad, though not over large, possessed more worth while ma- terial than in former years. We are looking for these men to fill the score book with points in the future. Wittenberg’s 1937-38 cagers came back strong after their first Marietta game. Jan. 15. to win fifteen games in a row and capture the Ohio conference honors. Breaking five all-time Wittenberg sports records, the Lutheran quintet was heralded throughout the state for their achievements during the season. In addition to finishing the season with a record of 19 wins and six losses in their 25-game program, the Stobbsmen rolled up the following records: 1. Wittenberg’s initial Ohio conference championship. 2. Three times an all-time high scoring total for a single game: Jan. 21, Witten- berg 72, Muskingum 30; Feb. 4, Wittenberg 73, Ohio Northern 39 (there); Feb. 22, Wittenberg 79, Ohio Northern 27 (here). 3. Wittenberg’s longest streak of consecutive victories over Ohio conference foes: 19 (including eight victories in 1936-37 season). 4. All-time individual high scoring mark, set by Frank Shannon, Feb. 24. at Marietta with 24 points on 11 goals and two fouls. 5. New all-time combined high score of 106. established when the Lutherans whipped Ohio Northern, 79—27. Still more records flowed into Wittenberg cage annals, though of lesser signifi- cance than the above five marks: 1. The longest winning streak in Ohio college basketball during the 1937-38 season: 15 games. 2. Wittenberg’s all-time record for consecutive triumphs tied, as the 1930-31 team also registered 15 straight. Coach T. W. Stobbs’ record as head cage mentor reached 84 games won and 52 lost, with his average for seven seasons at .617. His chart now shows a co- championship, a second and a fourth in the Buckeye Association, and two-fourths and a championship in the Ohio conference. Lew Werener was named for the first string center post on virtually every all-star All-Ohio team while the other four Lutheran regulars. Andy Moran, forward; Frank Shannon, forward; Tom Rankin, guard; and Ray Dykstra, guard rated at least honorable mention posts on nearly every team Lew drew a place on. Phrc Fifiy-six SEASON IN REVIEW IN their initial contest of the season against Du- quesne at Pittsburgh Wittenberg lost. 39—36. Continuing their eastern tour, the Lutherans won three straight over Dickinson, 38 30, Juniata, 54 34, and Lehigh, 46—44. In the remaining four games ol the Pre-christmas tour, the Stobbsmen managed to emerge with a victory in only one. a 48—35 triumph over Washing- ton. St. Thomas. Rider, and St. Joseph, whipped the Lutherans, 33—29, 46—43, and 40—36 to finish the eastern itinerary. Dayton’s Flyers whipped Wittenberg in the open- er of the regular schedule on the Lutheran hard court. 36 35, in a thriller. Xavier threw another blemish on Whittenberg’s endeavors, when it out-roughed the Lutherans on Cincinnati court, 37 27. Ohio Wesleyan visited Wittenberg, but returned home in sorrow tor the Lutherans had smothered them. 48 30. Flashing form for the first time of the season, the Cardinal and Cream downed Marietta. 50—42. for their initial Ohio conference win at the field house. Findlay, conference adversary, put up a good fight, yet they faltered in the last half to lose to the Stobbsmen, 43 36. on the Findlay court. For the first time evincing the power of their aggregation, the Lutherans over- whelmed Muskingum, a conference foe, 72 30, at the field house. In a home game between semesters, Earlham bowed to the Lutherans, 55 38, in a non-conference affray. The Big Red from Denison went to perdition before the Lutherans in the initial conference contest of the second semester, tin Wittenberg’s court, 62 32. Smothering Ohio Northern’s Polar Bears. 73 39, the Lutherans rolled up their fifth conference win at Ada, Ohio. Cincinnati gave the Lutherans the most opposition in two weeks, yet that team was bettered 30- 27 bv Wittenberg here. Heidelberg was Wittenberg’s sixth league and ninth all-games victim in a skirmish here, losing, 57 27. Wittenberg conquered Bowling Green there, 43—40. in a league game. Otterbein lost to the Lutherans, 36 30. in another Ohio conference en- counter here. Treking to Kent State, the Lutherans returned with a 49- 40 bunting in a conference altercation. Ohio Northern was Wittenberg’s tenth league victim, losing a 79 27 de- cision here. 300 students accompanied the cagers to Dayton, where Wittenberg rolled up its fourteenth consecutive win in a non-league affair. 39 36. In the season’s final game, Wittenberg routed Marietta’s Pioneers at Marietta. 53 35. to give the Lutherans the Ohio conference title. COACH T. V. BROWN ALMOST concurrent with the varsity’s long winning streak. The Wittenberg freshman cagers rolled up eight consecutive wins in games serving as preliminaries to the intercollegiate encounters to wind up with a 1.000 hatting average. Only before the Earlham and Ohio Northern contests did the frosh fail to exhibit their dexterity on the hard courts. Norman Foster and Clifford Heskett at forwards were crack shots, while Don Wearley seems to be the answer to Coach Stobbs prayer for a center to replace the graduating Werner. Both of the aforemen- tioned speedy forwards are capable of holding down varsity posts, while Wearley needs a bit of seasoning. At the guard positions Scheide- mantel and Shelhaas played excellent ball. Under the tutelage of Dr. Wilbur West, new swimming mentor, the mermen captured the initial meet of the season, edging the Fenn college swimmers. Gilbert Dickerhoof, a mainstay for three years and Ohio conference diving champion two years ago, became ineligible after the Fenn contest. The program, still an important part of the physical education program, retained boxing which was introduced last year. The sports dropped from the calendar were indoor baseball and fall horseshoes. • TAG FOOTBALL Completing its schedule with a record of two wins, one tie and no defeats. Alpha Tau Omega topped the list in the “A” division. Delta Sigma Phi was second in the final standings. Undefeated, but twice tied. Dorm League took top honors in “B” league competition. Beta Theta Pi, also undefeated, was forced into second place as a result of having tied three of its games. Alpha Tau Omega won its first two games in the play-off series with the Dorm League to assume undisputed championship in tag football. • VOLLEY BALL Competition in “A” league volleyball resulted in a three-way tie among Alpha Tau Omega, Phi Kappa Psi and Phi Gamma Delta. In the play-off matches Alpha Tau Omega defeated Phi Kappa Psi, only to be nosed out by Phi Gamma Delta in the finals. Champion of the “B” league was Alpha Tau Omega, closely followed by Phi Gamma Delta and Beta Theta Pi. respectively. • PING PONG Gaining 57 points in the all-sports race with Alpha Tau Omega, Phi Gamma Delta captured the ping pong title. In a tie for second place were Delta Sigma Phi and Hamma. Page Sixty-two • HANDBALL Breaking a three-way tie. Dorm League captured the handball champion, ship from Alpha Tau Omega and Phi (lamma Delta, who tied for second place. • BASKETBALL “A league competition in basketball was hotly contested from start to finish, in keeping with the race in the “B league which followed. Suffering only one defeat at the hands of Phi Gamma Delta, Theta Kappa Nu assumed championship in the senior division. Second in the final standing, with two defeats each, were Phi Gamma Delta and Phi Kappa Psi. Three stand-out teams raced through the “B” league season and ended in a three-way tie, each having lost but one game. In the first of the play-off games, Alpha Tau Omega defeated Phi Gamma Delta. In what was one of the most spirited games of the season. Pi Kappa Alpha’s tight zone defence proved too much for the A. T. O. team, giving the Pi Kaps the championship. • SWIMMING Victors by vitue of a one-foot lead in the final event. Delta Sigma Phi won its second consecutive swimming championship in the annual intramural meet. One point behind was Alpha Tau Omega in second place, with Phi Kappa Psi following in third place. • FOUL SHOOTING Presenting a team without a weak spot. Theta Kappa Nu took the laurels in the five-man event. Delta Sigma Phi and Phi Gamma Delta took second and third place respectively. Heading the list of individual performers was Norman Foster of Theta Kappa Nu, who completed 63 of 70 attempts. James Keyser, liamma, stood second with 56 out of 70 attemps. Chi Oinet:a lost the last match to Alpha Xi but already had enough points to win even with this loss. Alpha Delta Pi finished third. • VOLLEY BALL THE Intersorority Volleyball contest was won by Alpha Delta Pi. In second place, following closely, was Chi Omega. The Alpha Delt's defeated the Chi Omega’s to capture this trophy. Third place was won by Alpha Xi Delta. • POSTURE ALPHA DELTA PI gained first place in the Posture contest, with 80 points. Alpha Xi Delta captured second with 75 points and Chi Omega third with 75. Mary Chambers of Alpha Xi Delta won individual honors in the contest. Page Sixty-four • BASKETBALL BKTA PHI ALPHA, with an outstanding player in the person of Kay Schlegel, ran over all opposition to win the Basketball Championship. I heir stiffest opposition came from Chi Omega and Gamma Phi lk ta. Chi Omega finished second and Gamma Phi third. • SWIMMING DEITY FRENCH set a new pool record for the breast stroke and helped the Alpha Delt’s win first place in this Intramural Sport. Chi Omega finished second and Alpha Xi Delta third. • SUMMARY WITH the Intramural season practically over it seems that Alpha Delta Pi will capture the all sports trophy award for this year. Chi Omega and Alpha Xi Delta will probably follow in second and third positions respectfully. WOMEN’S INTRAMURALS I irc Sixty-fiiv ACTIVITIES Page Sixey-seten WITTENBERGER EDITORIAL STAFF Eduor .... Adding still more to the prominence of Wittenberg was the appearance of this choir on a nation-wide N. B. C. hook-up from Radio City, New York. Membership in this organization totals eighty-one; however, for travelling purposes, forty-one select members were named for the eastern trip. Springfield is quite familiar with the high caliber of this choir by dint of its numerous programs and concerts presented here. Recognition for its success must be given to the inspiring leadership of its director. Professor John Thomas Williams. CHOIR Page Ninety-eight ORCHESTRA WI TH new enthusiasm and revived interest the orchestra this year, under the leadership of Mrs. Haines, gained great success. Composed of 25 members the organization carried out one of its most extensive programs in years, and for their efforts won high acclaim. In the fall they presented a concert in the Chapel and this spring made a tour through Indiana and Ohio cities. Fifteen members will return next year and with the incoming freshman the orchestra has visions of new success in the future. First Row: LAUGHBAUM. PETTIGREW. GOTHERMANN, Bl 'RNS. Mrs. HAINES. When the influx freshmen women became too large in '36, an auxiliary dormitory was opened at 625 Woodlawn Avenue and called the Woodlawn House. The women’s dorm consists of three buildings: the old Wittenberg Academy, a brick building of 1884. Page One Hundred Fonytwi and later additions of 1914. Organised for the first time in the fall of '36. a house committee calls meetings at irregular intervals when it seems “desirable or necessary”. Approximately IS women from the differ- ent halls of the dormitory compose the committee which studies the discipline problems and later presents them to the entire dormitory group. Social activities of the Hall are Sunday teas, exchange dinners and parties, and birthday celebrations each month for the girls whose birthdays come at that time. A board composed of Russell Patterson, George Burns, Grade Allen, Betty Grable, and LeRoy Prinz acted as judges for the contest. At our suggestion, they cooperated to the extent that they sent a picture, showing them together judging our contest, accom- panied by the letter containing their decisions. Both the letter and the picture are available for anyone to see at any time. The Editor. Pane One Hundred Fiftyone GRADUATION 1937 Miyi-xifij piptntf-j .hiq .tSrj HOMECOMING SNAPS Action! Camera!
