II imiiiim SWORD SHIELD ssented by the Class of 1983 Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School Wittenberg, Wisconsin I BUY THE YEARBOOK BECAUSE . . . I got my pictures taken; I want to see how I look. This is also the first time 1 had my name in a book. I don’t want high school memories To linger in the past; What I do want Is to have them last. These memories are frozen in a yearbook; All the fun, all the sports. Of all the high school teachers, Students of all sorts. All the pictures, the sayings; All the weird, funny looks. Are all wrapped up Into one great book! Later on, in years from now Looking at pictures of my friends, I’ll know then what they say is true Good memories never end. A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM by William Shakespeare The Senior Class Play for 1982 is an ambitious pro- ject from the word “go.” With twenty-three actors and actresses, a plot that gets more and more com- plicated as the play goes on, and the dialogue written not only in poetry, but in Elizabethan poetry, everyone had his work cut out for him. This year’s group was equal to the task, though, and gave a performance that Wittenberg will not soon forget!! — CAST — (alphabetically) John Armstrong Philostrata Pat Augustine Demetrius Beth Beckett Hermia Jill Breske Peasblossom Derrick Bushman Theseus Mike Cherek Snug Brenda Ciszewski Titania Gary Duffrin Lysander Debbie Gorecki Cobweb Ron Hegewald Stage Manager Luke Leslie Tom Snout Neal Liebe Nick Bottom Mark Low Robin Starveling Scott McClellan Peter Quince Kevin Murdock Francis Flute Betsy Peters Helena Kari Reinholtzen Hippolyta Wendy Resch Robin Goodfellow Janine Szczech Fairy Bonnie Wolff Mustard Seed Greg Zabrowski Oberon Brad Zeinert Egeus 57 Pep Band: Row 1: G. M 's CHORUS The class is officially titled Vocal Music, and students taking this class should be able to sing, to follow the music score, and have an awareness of fundamental music theory. TRIM'S The three M’s, Modern Music Masters, are a group of music students belonging to the National Music students Fraternity called the Tri-M s. Students must possess a “C ’ or better grade point and express and demonstrate a love for all music. SWING CHOIR This is an extra fun group consisting of 24 members or less. The students move in time to the music as they sing. MADRIGAL Madrigal singers are generally the older singers with the best pitch or listening ability. They must sing without accompani- ment and the music sometimes breaks into six or eight part harmony. 62 63 Swing Chorus 1981-1982: Row 1: S. Swann, M. Meverden, M. Zoromski, L. Korbisch, J. There are twelve categories: Declamation, Demonstra- tion, Extemporaneous Speaking, Four-Minute, Interpreter’s Theater, Original Oratory, Prose, Poetry, Play Acting, Public Address, Significant Speech, and Story Telling. After hours of hard work, nervousness, and con- tests you try to reach the Forensics Goal: ON TO STATE! FBLA The future belongs to today’s youth. Future Business Leaders of America is a student vocational organization that helps members, through its various service projects and fund-raisers, to become a more knowledgeable, confident leader with a positive self-concept — the number one leadership trait. One event that allows members the oppor- tunity to focus on their goals for the future is the Regional Leadership Conference (RLC). There are six regions in Wisconsin, each hosting an RLC. The RLC’s are designed to test and further develop vocational skills — skills that are useful as the basis for entry-level jobs or advanced training — and to develop leadership skills that are so important in today’s ad- vancing business world. Since being elected as a state officer last February, Lisa DeLeeuw, FBLA Region III Vice President, had been preparing to host an RLC at Witt-Birn. Lisa, working with Sandy Filtz and FBLA advisers Pat Messerschmidt and Tom Stanek, put together a very successful con- ference program. Many hours of work and dedication, both during and after school, were devoted to developing the conference which was held on Saturday, February 12, 1983 at the high school. Approximately 425 members of FBLA chapters from 21 high schools across nor- theastern and central Wisconsin were in attendance. Those who participated competed in academic areas and had a chance to improve themselves, their business qualities, and their enterprise system by attending hour-long sectionals. DeAnne Frease, from Marinette, succeeds Lisa as a state officer. She will be installed and take office as the 1983-84 Region III Vice President at State Competition in May. The enchanting, yet familiar fairy tale was sung to a very large and suppor- tive audience on November 5th and 6th by a W.B.H.S. cast including students from freshman year through seniors. A long seven-week practice schedule was strict- ly followed and the result was a fine show. Mrs. Luedtke, Musical Director, would like to express her special gratitude to the seniors who have been in the last 3 and some even 4 school musical productions. Thank-you: Kari Reinholtzen, Betsy Peters, Jan Szczech, Luke Leslie, Lori Johnson, Carrie Writz, Lisa Luedtke, Desi Reeder, and Mary Liethen. You will in- deed be missed in the W.B.H.S. In the past, the students who worked in the library were called Library Cadets. The name Cadets has been eliminated due to student request. The people who are working in the library constitute a rather informal group prefering to be referred to as aides or club members, with no club officers being elected. Library aides work during their study hall periods per- forming such duties as checking books in and out, shelv- ing books, checking in new newspapers and magazines, filing old magazines, working on bulletin boards, keeping the library clean and neat, and miscellaneous duties. Social activities are planned for outside of school such as roller skating, bowling, and a Christmas party. The downhillers thrill to the ride up the hill on the chair lift or T-Bar and the chance to display their skill at carving turns and controlling speed on their descent. The cross country skiers delight in making their way through the untouched snow, cutting trails as they go, or gliding across a groomed trail. A typical ski trip starts with everyone rising early to catch the bus that leaves at 6:30 A.M. After a long and sleepy ride, members pile out of the bus amidst skis and poles flying here and there as members try to find out which ones are theirs. After an hour or two on the slopes or trails, it is back to the chalet to warm up, chat with friends, munch on snacks, or to have a hot chocolate. The afternoon finds the beginning downhill skiers testing their wings on the longer beginner and intermediate runs and find to their surprise that all goes well. The day passes quickly and soon it is time for the long ride home. After much exercise and fresh air, it is usually a quiet trip since most have fallen asleep. Home at last and there is talk about sore legs, tired arms, “wipe outs,” and when the next trip is. As usual, a good time was had by all. 79 The Spanish Club is a cultural and social club for those students who are now taking Spanish or have already taken it. We show films and have speakers. At Christmas we prepare a typical Spanish meal for members and their guests. We also raise money for scholar- ships to World Affair Seminar at U.W. Whitewater, where students participate in a workshop for one week during the summer. Some years we go to Folk Fair at Milwaukee. We also have a special interest in helping our exchange students in any way we can. Spanish Club Row 1: B. Newcomb, K. Schram, S. Filtz, S. Kupiic, J. Kulas. C. Escolano, M. Navarro. Row 2: J. That’s really what cheerleading is all about . . . building spirit and promoting good sportsmanship for your teams, your school, and your friends. Tryouts for the positions on the varsity squads are held in the spring; while summer means cheerleading camp and plan- ning for the new school year. In the fall the football cheerleaders are kept busy, and tryouts are held for JV basketball cheerleaders. During the winter season the basketball and wrestling squads spend many hours practicing and cheering. 93 Cross Country The 1982 Cross Country Season The 1982 cross country season was the best in Charger history as both the boys and girls team won sec- tional championships and went to the state meet. During 1982, twelve trophies were added to the Charger collec- tion. What about next year. It was a building year for the team. We lost a few key players, but the experience gained by the underclassmen should get us ready for next season. If we can improve our hitting we should be ready for a good year in “83.” o J' I knew I shouldn’t have gone out last night. Tell me another one, Desi. Home run time? 1st Row: B. Newcomb, W. Linke, W. The wrestlers on this year’s team are a dedicated crew and are working hard to achieve their goals. Since wrestling is an individual sport, the team aspect comes last and each individual on the team tries to win their particular match. Any grappler who likes a one-on-one challenge with another grappler, then wrestling is the sport that will challenge them. This year’s team is the 2nd best talented team at Witt-Birn high. We would like to thank the people who have followed our wrestling team for their support. 116 Row 1: B. Newcomb, A. Ploeger, T. Armstrong. Row 2: J. Anderson, K. Murdock, L. Leslie, P. Teens Against Disease is an an- nual Student Council sponsored event. The 1983 T.A.D. week at Witt- Birn was a great success. A total of $1988.13 was raised bet- ween the competing classes. Freshman representatives, Greg Dif- for and Corrie Norrbom were crowned King and Queen of the TAD dance because their class raised $715.27 for charity. Senior representatives, Derrick Bushman and Kristi Gauthier, were second with $508.58; Junior representatives, John McCullough and Laurie Bushman were third with $480.53; Sophomore represen- tatives, Mike Beran and Julie Byrnes were fourth with $283.75. The 1983 TAD charity drive set a new record for funds raised. This money will be distributed by the Student Council to Cerebral Palsy, March of Dimes and Muscular Dystrophy. 125 King Greg Diffor and Queen Corrie Norrbom 126 So much to remember Right now as I look back So many kinds of people, The ones that make you laugh. We run from day to day Really never knowing why. It’s the love that keeps you going, It’s the will that makes you try. And you’re sitting at a football game With the first chill in the air — The people bundled, shouting, cheering While you sit without a care. The good times all remembered While the bad are pushed aside You remember all the laughter And forget the times you cried. Together as people we grow, Together as friends you share, Together learning to show Just how much you care. Life is made of memories kept And making friends that last, It’s hard sometimes to realize How the time has gone so fast. And if only for a moment Wc could bring back all those days, We would live tomorrow and love today And smile all the way. by Barb Branchfield ANNUAL STAFF Row 1: Kari Reinholtzen, Beth Beckett, Barb Bowers. This year’s co-editors (to your right) are Beth Beckett and Kari Reinholtzen. They and their staff put in many long hours to complete this year’s annual. In November we had our Yearbook Sales Campaign Week with activities, con- tests, and excitement to get students to buy this limited edi- tion. We gave away a free yearbook, pizza, and movie pass. In February, we sponsored “Computer Fun” where everyone filled out a questionnaire — 10 days later they received a letter from the computer telling them who they’re compatible with. This was a big success as we raised almost $200. We hope you enjoy this book. 128 Autographs WITTEM
