Miss Trezbiatowski coached running events and Miss Ebert coached field events. Sharon Weller, a sophomore, put in a great effort and earned a first at conference and went to sec- tionals, doing well there in the long jump. A lot of hard work went into it but there were times when everyone relaxed and had fun. Next season should be better if everyone returns. SENIORS Row 1: L. Tabbert. K. Easker, C. Zoromski, V. Cherek. Row 2: D. Mueller, K. Kasprak. J. Schroeder 11 BOY’S TRACK The Charger Track team in the spring of 1978 was thin on talent but loaded with potential. Several young athletes had outstanding seasons. Freshman, John Easker was a Dual Champion in the Conference meet winning both the mile and two mile. John was also regional mile champ. Glen Koenig was runner-up champ in both hurdler events. Perhaps in '79 the young charger thin-clads will develop into true champions. TRUCKIN’ ON Row 1 left to right: R. Lemke, S. Poock, M. Sickler. R. Brekke, J. Duffrin, L. Rosmarynowski, J. Easker. R. In 1979 the Chargers should indeed live up to Coach Bernie Voight’s label of Mag- num Force. Not only will the top seven runners be back, but 12 of the top 14. “Super time in 79!!! Different activities took place each day during spirit week, including working on floats each day after school. Thursday was the bonfire and snakedance, and pep- talk, given by Ron Bauch and Chris Krull. Friday afternoon was the coronation and big parade. Results of the floats were: Juniors 1st, Seniors 2nd, Soph. 3rd, and Frosh 4th. STUDENTS STUDY IN MEXICO Being a foreign exchange student may have been one of the best things that ever happened to us, even though it presented problems as well as all of the good times we had. The people in Mexico are really great. They put up with a lot, both from the United States and their own government, but they still accepted us as we were, rather than as “Ameri- cans”, with no individual personalities. The country is beautiful. It isn’t all like the cactus-filled deserts that we think it is, but it’s green, with mountains, lakes and seashores. The food is excellent. It isn’t anything like the ‘‘Taco-BeH type up here, and they don’t eat tacos at every meal. They eat a lot of fresh fruit, like mangos, and are pretty big on custard for dessert. The people that we stayed with are richer than the average Americans. We had maids, gardeners who came in to do the lawns, and someone to wash the cars. The customs are nicer than those in the United States. Things are a little stricter than they are here where dating is concerned, but there’s always some place to go. Dancing is really popular. Karren Madson We were on opposite sides of the country but we did get to see each other once when the Chi- huahua volleyball team went to Monterrey. We did get to talk to each other but only in Spanish because our parents told us we shouldn’t use any English. After that we moved to our second families and lost contact. We got homesick, but now that we're home we are “homesick for Mexico.” We’ll go back as soon as we can to visit our families and friends and to relive all of the good times that we had. 74 Dawn Pawlowski FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT MANUEL GONZALES “My name is Manuel Gonzales. I'm from Lima, which is also the capitol of Peru. 1 graduated from Monte Del Carmen High School two years ago. “My father owns a sawmill across the Andes Mountains in the jungle. I enjoy working there and earning money. “I like lots of sports, but I really like playing soc- cer, surfing, and up here in the snow, tobogganing. 1 also like building air models, partying, and American girls. “Most any American food appeals to me, espe- cially bar-b-cue and milk, but I don't like sauer- kraut or root beer. I also like to eat at McDonald’s. I enjoy my classes here and the kids are really friendly. I stayed with Dignan’s the first semester, and I am staying with Cherry’s for the second semester. Both were good host families.” After I finish school here, I plan to go to Staut University for Industrial Technology. 75 STATE PARTICIPANTS Through great effort and hard work two instrumentalists, Laurie Shepel and Rick Lettau, and one vocalist. But the person holding that grade book or writing on the blackboard does have a life outside of school. Teachers do not wait with bated breath for Monday mornings nor do they feel disappointment on “snow days.” If anything, they look forward to “TGIF,” Thank God it’s Friday, with more zeal than the students. They do not enjoy grading papers, dealing out “F’s” or giving stu- dents a hard time. Teachers want, very much, for their students to succeed. Teachers do the best they know how and it’s time we appre- ciated their efforts. Oth- ers have felt it was days of good times, but every- one agrees it has been an experience. Our fresh- man year seemed different in many ways, but it was a beginning. A chance to meet new people, start an athletic career, and grow as individuals. It was our time now to enjoy the maturity shared only by our peers before us. Who can’t remember looking up to seniors and wishing to have their nonchalant attitude? The dominate idea that sticks in our memories is the spirit shared by all. Friday night football games, cheering on buses, and chowing down after school. Change came in 1976 with America turning 200 years old. We returned to familiar faces while the White House prepared to greet a new face. Sophomore days of being involved, getting our feet wet, and gaining the security of the school routine and activities, surrounded by friends. Olympians set new records as we set out to establish traditions of our own. Domi- nance in Homecoming events and T.A.D. were to remain with us throughout our years. Now we were in our junior year. Our prom, “Nights are Forever”, showered the commons with hundreds of stars as organization paid off. “Star Wars” was a big hit, but there would be more spectacular things just ahead. The “King of Rock ’n’ Roll” and the “grand old man of comedy” were no more, but we still had friends. We had a special closeness now, We were on our way to becoming adults. Time was passing quickly. Our senior year. The time many begin losing interest, direction, and ideals. Now we begin to think of independence, new faces, and chal- lenges. We have struggled through confusion, instability, and failures. But more fondly we will remember May 25, 1979. Leaving a part of us behind and moving on to begin new from this day, to contemplate opportunities, and to achieve our dreams. Autographs
