Faces reflect them all. Each face tells a story . . . Captured in an instant. . . Preserved for our memory. STUDENTLIFESTUDENTLIFESTUDENTLIFESTU DENTLIFESTUDENTLIFESTUDENTLIFESTUDENT Sock if fo Me, SCHOOL! How many of us wake with the feel- ing of a bright new day. And then that thought comes to us - school! What am I going to wear? I forgot to do my homework! Do I have time to eat? I'm gonna miss the bus! Can I take the car? Isn’t school fun? The Shoemaker shuffle. Now you know what Superman looks like in the morning. Nothing like an hour long bus ride to study for an exam in the morning. What do you mean GOOD Morning? Beware ye who enter here; you are taking your brain into your own hands. 8 Cramming for next hour’s econ test. Mutual interests. Bells, Books, and a Busy Morning Putting the finishing touches on my glass project. Catching up on my beauty sleep. First hour is always interrupted by a blast from the PA system consisting of old and new news com- monly known as the morning announcements. They wake you up to put you to sleep. By the time it's all over, 20 minutes later, half the class is scattered to various places for meetings, rehears- als , or questioning. After this, you learn how to clean your ears. 9 Hours of Hie Mourning What plays bingo, does the Mexican hat dance and watches Donald Duck? None other than that group known as Spanish Club. Besides these noteworthy activities they have had many guest speakers. Lots of big decisions are made in the morn- ing . Like that of the student council plan- ning on picking up pop bottles from now on - Monday thru Tuesday. Sometimes they sponsor an assembly to give us an escape from our blah day. It is during some of these we realize class isn't the worst that could happen to us. It fell on your shirt. Everybody sing. According to my calculations we’re now $.03 in debt. Contemplating his next strategic move. For my next impersonation, the Frito Bandito. 10 Musical Chairs To most of us music is relaxa- tion and a chance to get away from hard learning for one short hour. But this one hour is not the only time students show off their musical ability. Music may be heard floating in the air near the music rooms any hour of the day. It takes a lot of hard work to achieve musical talent. Every concert and contest we attend requires many hours of rehearsals. Don’t be surprised if you hear Christmas songs in October. This reminds me of last night's date. I just ripped my pants! ll Lunch Bunch Action What is lunch hour? . . . certainly not an hour. ... a stampede to the lunch line only as a matter of habit. ... a brief encounter with the food on your plate. . . . friends gatitering and food flying. . . . news spreading about the forthcoming econ quiz. . . . crowds gathering at numerous sucker sales. You must eat your greenies! 12 Once you get it in your mouth, half the problem's licked! Who sneezed on these forks? Cindy sweetly smiles. Belch! Burp! Smokin ain’t allowed in school? 1 know I'm supposed to be in class now, but Aton doesn't. They say this stuff makes your hair grow. Now, for something to weigh the rest down. 13 Building a better body. After High Noon Fifth hour is the time when the students finally start settling down to work. Not only are their minds hard at work but also their stomachs, churning away the hunger-satisfying lunch. It is then the meat of the classes get under way. Taking measurements? 14 Daaaa! Daaaa! Toothpick assembly line. Crisco spreads easier. But just as students begin to come to life, they are called off to some meeting or another. A recent poll at Witt-Birn High revealed that there is an increase of stomach disorders of 50% after lunch, as a result, hall traffic is on the rise. For a short time, teachers were ordered to be very strict about passes into the halls. Fortunately this order was relaxed soon after. OOh!! You gorgeous devil, Eddie! Now it's time to pass out the Arthur Ashe of a different color, new Barbie dolls. is Help! My lip's caught! Go! Go! HUSTLE! HUSTLE!!! I am the girl of the Ziegfield Follies. Our guest speaker for today's pep rally is Alfred P. Dead. What do you mean the Seniors lost again? Who Took the Pep out of Pep Assemblies? Confucius say: Want to keep kids quiet? - Send to pep assembly. At W-B this fact was proven time and again. Usually the only thing that moti- vated the crowd was the thought of winning competition. That's when the big mouths really showed through. Many times the cheerleaders stir- red up minimum spirit with maximum effort. They even went to such extremes as to threaten to cancel all pep assemblies from now on. But have no fear, this will never happen! Teachers are more than willing to get rid of their animals on Friday afternoons. 16 The band out for an afternoon stroll. Talent on Parade Even though our team was unsuccessful at win- ning our homecoming game, spectators did enjoy a few minutes of parade entertainment. Highlighting the parade were the efforts of the FFA, Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors which were reflected in their colorful and decorative floats. Class representatives accented their floats by preceding them. The band added spice to the parade by performing intricate maneuvers in the city square. All these features combined to make our parade one that we shall easily forget. Datsun proves it has a rugged suspension. Junior ingenuity? You get fewer nicks with THIS single edged razor! 17 Ahh! I blew a shoe! 3:15, and the Race is on! Clockwatchers anxiously watch the hands of the clock, waiting for that magic moment. It is then the upstairs stu- dents turn into a herd of buffalo stampeding down the stairs, while the lower floor transforms into a herd of horses racing to get the back seat of the bus or to be the first car out of the parking lot, heading the buses off at the You're right Marla, physics is a joke, pass. As the buses roar into the sunset we bid farewell to the teachers who are members of the 3:16 club. Our indoor track. Help! I can't get up! What happens after school? 18 s % What a job for a slave! I've had enough for one day. Yeller Fever My anti-perspirant dries hard, fast. . . . but I'm scared of heights. One way that girls can let off a lot of their energy and jump around and scream without anyone thinking them a bit odd is by being on a cheer- leading squad. Cheerleading combines athletic ability with the grace and poise of modern dance. These girls work many long hours perfecting rou- tines that would best enable them to Rock On. ” Besides that, they spend their time building pyra- mids, chicken-fighting, and playing choo-cnoo (locomotive). Beneath all their hard work, you can tell these girls like to play games. And that’s that! I wish CHARGERS was easier to spell. 19 John trucks on through. Who ever said running was fun never ran as fast as I did! Our Boys Have Harrier Legs This year's harriers had quite a successful sea- son. compiling a 92-16 win-loss record. Per- haps the best summation of this years season was made by Coach Voight who said - The key to this year's successes was constant improvement through dedicated practice. After starting the season with two mediocre performances, the team began to believe that they could be a winner, and after victory in the Charger Invitational it was one triumph after another, climaxing with a berth in the state tournament. Our cross country team certainly proved Charger power exists at state levels. We only have 2 1 4 miles to go after the first flag. Greg takes a bow. Martin and Mueller are doing what??!!! 20 Would you belive it's stuck? I know I put my make-up in my golf bag some place. Hey you . . . oops, it hit her! Golf Bags This year’s girls' golf team was comprised of pride in being a recognized sport in our school. Though their record didn’t show it, the team has made vast improvements in their second year of exist- ence . Veterans came into this season with more self-confi- dence , and inspired the younger team members to keep playing, even though the river attracted many of their balls. After hours of hard work the team members had the satisfaction of being more self-confident than when they started. Not another one in the river! What do ya want, a ball in the mouth? 21 I think I gotta go potty. Look out Bobby Riggs, here I come! Teaberry shuffle. The Witt-Birn Racketeers Confucius say: Much mus- cle wreck racket. Up until this year girls’ tennis has been pushed into the back- ground by boys’ sports, but with the famous Battle of the Sexes’' it has made forward progress. Our second season was not spent on learning how to play, but instead on constant drills and exercises. Returning members had an established poise that comes only from previous experience. A greater turn out over last year’s team shows a promising future for girls' tennis. MARGARET on the COURT 22 Ha, I’ll show her! Right here, Rene, but remember, I bruise easily. Success, Right Off the Bat The girls' softball team began its first season with a surprising two wins in a row. But if you want to count forfeits (and they did) it was an astounding THREE IN A ROW! The girls worked hard to prove that they too can compete under extreme pressure and come out on top. The closeness of the games they lost supported the fact that they were tough competitors and fought to the end. What is HE doing out there? 23 One more sport may be added to the long line of W-B Girls' Athletics - Girls' Volleyball. No one would believe that such a fun game could have so many strict rules. And many girls didn't even know some of the rules existed until they were committed. Never before had volley- ball been played in this school as a competitive sport. The girls experi- enced determination and were required to concen- trate on strategy in order to defeat their oppo- nents. The disadvantages of being short. It's all in the wrist action. 24 I’ll show that U.F.O.! Gloria shows her might. Great Athletic Ability? An organization which at the start of the year attracts both athletic and non-athletic girls is GAA. In the beginning if you put all the members of GAA into one room, you’d have quite a tight fit. If you put all the mem- bers into one room at the end of the year, there would be lots of room to spare. Don’t get us wrong! GAA is not a great slimming program! It seems to easily lose members, not pounds. GAA provides a release for all types of girls in WB High. It's activities go from bowling to line soccer. The steady goers to the GAA activities and those that stick it out are really the hard- guy girls of Witt-Birn High. Joyce attacks! Dig those muscles. The perfect form. Butt-eautiful. I can't get my butt out of gear! 25 Terror of the Track Boys' track and field proved to be another highpoint of Charger sports in the 1972-73 school year. This was accomplished through dedication, hard work, and guts from every member of the squad, each trying to excel in his indi- vidual event. This hard work proved to be rewarding as the Charger thinclads copped three large invitationals, brought home the conference trophy, and sent four individuals to state. Getting psyched for the upcom- ing run. Dem d'ere boys dun did win. When I said I’d like to see as much of an athlete as possi- ble , I meant abilify, NOT BODY! 26 Over the hurdles and through the puddles to the finish line we go. The rain shrunk my shot-put! . . . and Mary Lou, this time go to the bathroom BEFORE you run the mile. And it says here all managers must wear a pleasant smile! I knew I shouldn't have eaten lunch! I wish 1 could use my frisby. A New Field in W-B Girls'Sports The spring of 1973 marked the beginning of a new girls' athletic sport - o track and field. Even though the girls knew very little about the sport, they soon realized their coaches knew just as much. They went by the books until the first meet, when they found out what was really going on. The books never told how tough opposition could be, or how inexpe- rience and lack of confidence can play a part in losing a meet. But in the end they came through with a victory which brought back their con- fidence and gave them experience enough to hopefully make next year bigger and better. 27 Bats, Bases and Homeruns Though the season was cut short by the monsoon rains which hit in the spring, the Charger baseball team achieved many rewarding successes. All the hardy members gained great satisfac- tion from their sunburns, blisters, and sweat, that led up to gratifying victo- ries. Now cut it out, you guys! My % (§ finger keeps coming out of this glove. If I don't fix it soon, he'll really start crying. He actually hit the ball into the outfield! It’s working! (I hope!) 28 1 wish those guys wouldn't draw dirty pictures on their score cards. Who says the score keeper can't cheat? Puttering Around Egad it’s NOT working! It's stuck in my belly-button! Anyone who has ever golfed knows it takes concentration, practice, and a large amount of skill to be good. Our boys golf team combined these three ingredients to establish new records in Charger sports. Though golfers went equipped with swim fins to most of the matches they still established a respectable record. That gopher ran like hell, but I did get my ball back. 29 If you can’t teach ’em entertain 'em! Enough to make John Wayne jealous. They Taught Us all We Know The teachers of Witt-Birn High are of a species of their own. To any visitor of our school, they may look like any run-of-the- mill bunch, but the student body of Witt- Birn know better. Even the most stem teach- ers have a bit of humor in them which seeps out at the strangest times. Some people never grow up. GOO BOO GA GA. What a sucker! 30 Betcha think I'm gonna hit my thumb . . . SMASH How did I get stuck with this job? A creative mind at work. A Master- piece . . . ora Mess? Don’t let him get away! You never know what will develop when you com- bine the creative talents of a class. This year we came up with everything from cemeteries to the moon. With few supplies to work with the results were surprisingly unique. Good times and float- making seem to go together. That's a goofy looking five. 31 Chargers Tackle Tough Qeason The Charger football team proved that they could not be outdone by the feats of previous Charger teams. They accomplished this by compiling an almost per- fect one and seven record. Spectators were thrilled by exciting football tactics almost every game they attended. Our boys truly deserve a hand, for it is much harder to be a loser than a winner. The look of Charger spirit. This football is autographed by Otto Schiklegrouber. Grill gulps gator-aid. 32 Hey, get your crummy hands off the cash! I think I could get to like this. Ooh, don't you ever wash your hair? Did you see that guy dance! ? Shake and Bake An unusual event at Witt-Birn High is a thing called a dance. It’s not because the kids in school don’t like to jive. In fact, everyone enjoys shakin' it or watching others attempt to shake it. (Lots of kids who walk with a funny wiggle find that wiggle mixed with music is really cool.) One of the most exciting parts of a dance is the almost complete absence of light. But, of course, there is always a kill-joy - the coke machines! Aside from the occasional lights on episodes and the overfriendly chaperones, dances are right on! Just a jiv'in. 33 On to the locker room for last minute instruc- tions. Basket Bawl! Not all basketball games have the same rules - and some have no rules at all. Take for instance, the game between the Bunglers and the Witt-Birn Faculty. The Polish blunder and Teen-Angel made tneir first and only appear- ance in the school gym fighting back the mouths of the Golden Hanger Gang. But riding a stubborn donkey is another matter. Tight fit- ting pants are a no-no, and you must keep an eye out so you don't fall into some icky-poo as you vault over the donkey's head. The bronc- Duster-of-the-year award went to Critter for his outstanding performance in taming a poor defenseless donkey. Cheering for the asses. Mr. Stanek plays leap frog. Time out for a quick picker-upper. 34 We May Never Pass This Way Again This is Charger Country! The guys of Witt-Birn High have finally found a game they can handle. Possibly it’s because they find the uniforms less con- fining , the balls are easier to handle. and the weather much more stable. But to the amaze- ment to some, (nobody in Witt- Birn, of course), the Chargers took the Central Wisconsin Con- ference Championship for the second year in a row! We’re proud and WE’RE NUMBER ONE! Gee Coach, I didn’t mean to hurt 'em. My finger is caught in the net! Kitty demonstrates Charger strength. . . . and he's only a sophomore. 35 What a shine!! I can see myself! Bless me Father, for . . . You've Gof a Hold on Me Although wrestling isn't a crowd drawing event, if you go to one meet, you'll go again, because you can't see just one. Not many people realize that Witt-Bim has a fantastic wrestling team. Possibly because this is a slight exaggeration. Nonetheless, we are sure our wres- tlers are right on! We are also sure that they are bigger than us. Hey, not everyone can be fantastic - but they are what they are - GREAT! A job well done! You mean there's no cash prizes? If he don't win I'll kill 'em. 36 Zombie in the morning. Downhill Chaser. What do I do next? Snow bunnies??? Let's move it now! Tears and Hard-Aches What group in our school does more to further the demand for crutches? Ski Club. This hearty group of adventurers goes to the slopes every crisp winter weenend to put their lives at the mercy of tneir uncontrollable skis. Of course, by the end of the season they have all learned the basic rules. One of the first things they learn is don't eat yellow snow. Because of all the Poles and Skis, this is a good sport for this region. 37 SING ALONG WITH MA T is for the T.V. ap-pear-ance 1 ‘ fe R is for the run-ning to school. I j jgjrg is for in-i-ti-a-tion. No wonder Mr. Jackson outlawed messing around in the halls! Me Tarzan, you Jane? 38 I just shaved last month! Kelly uses Lovely Lash. It's Curtains for Witt-Birn The chorus room was transformed into a mudslide of make-up and paling tans were renewed. Mr. Sibley expertly constructed ships on stomachs and made one corner into joe’s tatoo shop. ” The off beat shenanigans of Luther Billis and Company along with the sparkling antics of Bloody Mary added a dose of humor to South Pacific. The almost always reliable stage crew made their public debut on stage in one particular performance when signals were crossed. These were the hectic times as our school tried to put on a top quality musical. But after everyone had caugnt up with their work and sleep, it was the general attitude that it was a real shame it had to end. Hai Karate drives women crazy. You even did the pleats in my shorts! Without the moo-moo that grass skirt would really look saxy! 39 I think I’m gonna be sick! Maybe I should grow a beard too. Three Actors in Their Drawers You may wonder why these kids feel inclined to wear only their under- wear while on stage in front of everyone. Possibly you think the school budget for costumes is low or that because of the energy crisis, there is a limited supply of costume materials. THIS IS NOT TRUE! The fact is, Mr. Sibly wanted a change. Wouldn’t you shoot yourself, too? And there they were, a herd of pink elephants. Well if it ain’t the white knight! 40 We Put It All Together The staff dummy. Pickin' and peckin' with no paper! The Annual Staff of 73-74 consisted of a group of kids that can only be classified as odd. This group of unknowns are not recognized by most until the finished product is produced. And this year, most people wish they could have strangled them BEFORE this book was published. They used a new device never used before. It's called brainstorming and vou get all your fan- tastic ideas gossiping about the school. After that it's just a case of courage to have everything they thought of published. And here it is. All they ask is please. no throwing rotten tomatoes. O. K. ? I love these shower room shots. Of course, I'm working! The magic touch. 41 One part orange juice, two parts vodka! Building a World of Dreams The week of the prom was a flurry of activity as members of the Junior class worked feverishly to complete the prom decorations. Many long hours were spent turning mere rolls of crepe paper in lush, green ivy vines and delicate blossoms. The climax of all these activities was the construction of a footbridge over a clear blue stream which lent a flavor of outdoors to the setting. Hard work makes for a nice prom. Actually, this isn't my best side. How do ya start this thing? 5 S 0 W ■ p p V 4 Arise O’rock! 42 I bet you'd never guess this is my first date! Nice weather we're having. Kelly, you're going to step on it!! Was it supposed to smell like that? I wonder what was on T. V. tonight? Dancin' and Romancin ’ in fhe Park A fantasy park was the costume of our commons on the night of the Junior Prom. The elegant fence, donned with blooming flowers and a graceful archway, pres- ented an exquisite atmosphere. The so-called shy girls who roam our halls are suddenly charming ladies, and bold, active boys become timid, mannerly gentlemen in the romantic semi-darkness of the evening. Together, the unique creek and bridge entrance, the flower wheelbarrow, and the colorful terrarium, all added up to Saturday in the Park. He just asked me to go steady. 43 ECORDSRECORDSRECORDSRECORDSRECOR )SRECORDSRECORDSRECORDSRECORDSRE( AdminisftaHon MR. GERALD JACKSON High School Principal MR. ERWIN B. WICKSTROM Superintendent MR.
