DORIS GUARDADO When my parents decided that I could participate in the International Fellowship Exchange Program the first thing I did was ask my English teacher, who is a native of Wisconsin now living in El Salvador, to help me select a state in the U. S. for my senior year. She told me that no state compared to Wisconsin. I thought she was exaggerating but now I realize that there are no words to adequately describe its beauty. There are lakes everywhere. I shall never forget the snow. I had to touch it many times to realize it was real. How I wish we had snow in my country! Of course I nearly freeze in cold weather. The best part of Wisconsin is its people. They have done so much to make me happy. Everyone has been so friendly and helpful. I am grateful to my teach- ers for all the help they have given me. I am thankful to everyone for the wonderful opportunity they have given me. 33 Honor Roll David Alwes Sue Konkel Jan Beversdorf Albert Krumins Sandy Dean Lydia Madson Susan Fischer Jane Opper Brian Gilbertson Louise Paulson Howard Graves Nancy Schairer Gina Gunderson Sue Siebert Renae Halbesleben Paula Steebs Jesse Hanke Pamela Steinke Jane Hastreiter Diane Szews Paula Hoekstra Sharon Umland Warren Hohn Mary Weller Glenn Jacobson Bonnie Zeinert Shirley Kitzmann Senior Awards Betty Crocker Award PAULA STEEBS Badger Boys' State ALBERT KRUMINS Badger Girls' State SHIRLEY KITZMANN D. Joe Cool??? Student Council T.A.P. ROYALTY S. Aton, Frosh; B. Brewer, Soph; V. Betry, Jr. Queen; P. Steebs, Sr. I will now attempt to juggle 4 balls and whistle Yankee Doodle at the same time. Now you put the plate on the stick and spin it. But never on a Sunday! I'd like you to meet my snake. Student Council The Student Council had another very successful year. The Council sponsored Homecoming, T.A.P., and the assemblies as well as serving as representatives of the school at many activities. The Council members act as representatives of the stu- dents and try to improve relations and poli- cies between students and the administra- tion. In addition they are involved in proj- ects to improve the school's appearance and to aid the students. 85 AAAGGGHH!! Club Spanish Club membership has gone up, up, and up. And the more the merrier! This year was packed with fun things to do. Forty students went on the annual trip to the Milwaukee Folk Fair. Among them was Doris Guardado, our exchange student from El Salvador. Our parties were unique. Where else can you swing at a dangling pinata with a baseball bat or eat such tasty foods as tamales and frijoles? And meetings, too, were never very dull. Betty Gonzalez, a former Wittenberg High School student now living in Mexico, came to speak to us. We were entertained by films, talks by our students who visited Mexico, and games. Fun seem- ed limitless. We hope the Span- ish Club of next year is as pros- perous as that of 71-72. I wanted Jose Feliciano. Betty Kurzewski Gonzalez Spanish Club Speaker Gee, I wonder who won the Spanish dictionary? OFFICERS: C. Day, V-Pres.;K. Jackson, Treas. ;R. Halbesleben, Rep.; H. Peterson, Rec. Chm.; J. Hanke, Pres.;J. Beversdorf, Sec. 86 I bet you tell that to all your leading men! Forensics Frustration, headaches, butterflies, re- writing difficult passages, all are a part of forensics. But basically it is much indivi- dual talent that is needed to be successful. When the work and coaching all come to- gether and you present your selection or speech, the sense of accomplishment fulfills you, no matter if you win or lose. Forensics is a vital part of our spring school scene. And everyone waits and hopes to see if they will be chosen to represent our school at the contests. But as many people say It is better to have tried and failed, than to never have tried at all. ... and in the middle of the lake it And on the other hand ... died. dik'sh n iz ver'i in pSr'tant!. hog calling contest. 87 One Act Play This year, the members of One Act Play presinted two short playlets by Shalom Aleichem. The first A Tale of Chelm was set in a Jewish Russian village. The second was the story of Bontche Schweig a meek pauper who en- ters heaven. Many after school rehearsals were held to speed the cast on its way to the finished polished performance. Although the cast was large, everyone cooperated and worked hard to put on an enjoyable play. The play received an A at sub-district and due to unfortunate circumstances a ”B at the district contest which Witt-Birn hosted. Four score and seven years ... I'm telling you it’s a male goat! Don't look at him, he can't read the sign either! I think she loves me! You are accused of willfully biting Mrs. Brennan in the leg. 88 Swing Choir Row 1: J. Bublitz, D. Knitter, Row 2: S. Many long, tedious hours were spent in compiling an organized enjoyable account of this year's activities. The editors had the headaches and the staff got the blame, but still we managed to succeed in creating the Sword and Shield of '72. You say deadline is tomorrow? Dear Paul, today was very exciting. We all sat around and watched the ice melt. OH! Those vulgar captions. Not bad, not bad at all. 90 So that's the story of the travel- ing salesman, huh?” Now wtiat do you do after you put the paper in? Paper Staff Paper staff was very successful this year, even though sometimes you may have won- dered when the paper was ever going to come out. We tried to revise our paper by putting articles you would enjoy and restyl- ing the form of the paper. News is usually gait i about the day of the deadline, naturally. You might have sometimes no- ticed our assembly line when we get it to- gether. Even though we never look busy we put in a lot of hard work. But our paper manages to get out anyway. Thanks to all who helped make our school paper a success ”1 didn't think it was funny.' Hey, Sue, there’s a 200 lb. twat on the ceiling. 91 Hang Overture With 20 pieces of bubble gum ... a new Goodyear blimp. Ain't gonna tell us what you got in your drum, eh Jane? Band Under the direction of Mr, Shepel, the band had a highly successful year. We turned out a half-time show for homecoming, and played at all home football and basketball games. We worked hard for Christmas, Pops, and Spring Con- cert, and presented them with high enthusiasm. A number of band members also took part in the Solo-Ensemble which was held in the spring. The band made their final performance of the year at commencement. The musical knowledge we have gained will remain with us for many years to come. Tutti Fluttie Who... me? Herb Alpert? Never. 92 Ray Coniff Singers eat your heart out. Chorus This year we had two choruses, both under the direction of Mrs. Luedtke. With our combined efforts, hard work, time, and patience, we turned out three fine concerts. We performed outstandingly at Spring Festival and at Solo-Ensemble. We may look back with pride over our achievements over the past year. Singing everyone? Where’s Diane??? 93 Tri-M’s OFFICERS: SITTING: G. Hart, Hist.; J. Hanke, Treas.; L. Paulson, Sec.; S. Kitzmann, Vice-Pres.; B. Hart, Pres. ;J. Hastrieter, Rep. This year our Tri-M's made its television debut. We taped two programs for the Sounds of Christmas. Tri-M's tour took us caroling merrily to Bayport and Bowler High Schools. Both were hugh successes. Informal initiation turned out to be an uproarious evening. Unfortunately the new members didn’t seem to look at it in quite that manner. Our parents enjoyed formal initiation where new members were officially made active Tri-M members. Thanks to the inspired leadership of Mrs. Luedlke and our officers this year's Tri-M’s was one of the best ever. Now where's the razor? Myra Breckenridge lives!!! So that's a Playboy, huh? 94 Tri-M’s Are you sure that this is a children's bed- time story? White Rain holds even in the rain. Thanks to our photographer for this candid Tri-M's shot. Gypsy Rose Lee is alive and well at W-B. You are going to treat us to a snail roast? Try it, you'll like it. 95 Future Business Leaders °f America SITTING: C. Krueger - Vice Pres.; N. Schairer - Pres. STANDING: T. Stanek - Advisor; A. Halowinski - Sec.; J. Olsen - Treas.; T. Jackson - Advisor. This year the Business Ed. Dept, started a new club. It began with a letter from state. Ambitious advisors and students helped FBLA grow from nothing to a full 72 members. In No- vember the interested students held an organizational meeting in which officers were elected. Due to scheduling of dates and bad weather the installation had a long wait. It was finally held in January, with the Mo- sinee Chapter installing the en- thused Witt-Birn members and officers. We hope that the hard work and effort in establishing this club will make it a success in future years at Witt-Birn. Feed your face the F.B.L.A. way. Steebs - Hist.; M. Weller - Sec.; Mr. Shepel - Advisor. You were expecting maybe Shirley Temple? Pep Club This year along with the new school, we started a fantastic new club - Pep Club! Its challenge was to raise school spirit and team morale. The club went all out for Homecom- ing, by decorating the gym with the theme Color My World and entering a float for competition. We made posters for all our sport activities, held a bake sale, and made a newspa- per and victory cake for our Cross Country team. School Spirit was en- couraged by the addition of skits for the Pep Rallies. Pep Club's infant year has turned into a most successful one! The day the charger spirit came to life! 97 OFFICERS: SITTING: R. Halbesleben, V. Pres.: R. Ostrowski, Pari,; J. Bublitz, Pres. STANDING. J. Kor- bisch, Hist.; C. Day, Rec. Chm.; N. We had a Mr. Lovely Legs Dance in which A1 Schultz reigned as our Mr. Lovely Legs. The freshmen were initiated by the soph- omores. The fall activities included the chili supper, fall rally, and the collection of odds and ends for the Homme Home for the Aged. We had the Silver Tea and a Christmas Dance, which were both successes. Some of our other activities included Daddy Date Night, Career Day, and FHA-FFA tobogganing party, a demonstration contest, and a variety show in which everyone showed their talents! The banquet and style show were held in April. The election of new officers put the ribbon on the 1971- 72 year. Glenn Jacobson - Dream Beau This isn't lemonade!! Lorraine Wierzba - Chapter Sweetheart FFA With the new school, improved conditions and new equip- ment this year the 1971-72 Future Farmers are more than ever learning how to be the top dairymen and farm managers of the future. It is hoped they'll continue to keep Wisconsin the Dairy State of the United States. Although the students miss the cus- tomary noon-hour candy sale, the pre-school sale is moving fairly well. Combined with the concession stand at the athletic events the FFA should secure enough money for their annual trip. Shoot for the moon ... .... I d like to shoot him. 99 Sit in front of me, will you? Though the weather wasn’t always obliging, the Charger Ski Club had an active sec- ond year. Trips were cancel- ed , rescheduled, and post- poned , but they were all en- joyed by a rapidly growing club. We didn’t make any money on our key fund-rais- ing project - the selling of Charger sweatshirts, but made up for it with a successful dance. The arrival of our club patches made our year complete. Can't ski with a pole through my foot. No I didn't fall, I’m just resting. — I think I’m doing something wrong. Jeff, you know we're supposed to be skiing. Sure beats walking. Girl’s Athletic Association Just remember - right foot, Beautiful, but where is the left foot, right foot, JUMP! piano? The G .A .A. had an active year with many new members. The girls met every Tuesday evening. They bowled, went tobogganing, and romped around the gym playing such games as basket- ball, volleyball, and soccer. We hope that in future years the G.A.A. will be as active as it has been during the 1971- 1972 season. OFFICERS: C. Larsen, Rec. Chm.; P, Hoff- man, V. Pres.; C. Day, Pres.jR. Lettermen The Lettermen's Club is an organization meant to promote athletic activities in the high school. The club presents awards to letter winners in all sports and steak dinners to outstanding players. This year the club sponsored the Charger Invitational Wrestling Tournament and the Athletic Banquet. They also work on money making campaigns for their projects. Lettermen are right on!! Blow in my ear and I'll follow you anywhere! Now who do you suppose would put a peace sign on a football helmet? 102 IVt-ffrUH The ranks of cheerleaders grew at W-B this year with the addition of a squad for wrestling. They stimulated much enthusiasm, and should continue to do so. Every squad spent many hours prac- ticing, perfecting yells and routines so they could always do their best at the big games. The girls were proud to be cheerlead- ers and enthusiastically to represent W-B's fine athletic program the best they could. Safety, from the 30 yard line? Good job gang. REGROUP!!! It sure doesn't taste like the uncola! Swing your partner! Tom, face masking or eye gouging? Another down, another five yards backward?? 104 Mamma told me there'd be days like this? Football The '71 Charger football season was one of high expectations and bitter disappointments. The team expected to finish high in the standings and the fans anticipated a winning season for the team. But the Chargers finished with only a 1-8 overall mark. What went wrong? The answer perhaps lies not in the physical, but in the psychological. Lack of confidence, inability to face pressure or to get back up after a loss, and indifference by both players and fans provide the backdrop for a losing season. Football cannot be explained in words for it is much too intricate, but Coach Aton perhaps summed up the season best when he said the victor will be the team that wants to win the most and refuses to be refused. But although their record was poor the Charg- ers put on some good performances that the sta- tistics don't show. '71 for the Chargers was the year that might have been. Close-up is for close ups. FOOTBALL AWARDS: Jack Wendler, Most Improved; Howie Graves, Most Valuable; Phil Guderson, Honorable Captain; Bob Muller, Most Valuable. 105 Cross Country CHARGE! !! The Charger cross country team experienced another suc- cessful season. They repeated as conference champions, cap- tured trophies in three invita- tional meets, and finished seventh in the state tourna- ment. Four Chargers dominated the 5 man all-conference team. They were Daryl Hanke, John Mueller, Jeff Kaufman, and A1 Holewinski. The squad had a composite season record of 64-14. W-B Grapplers The Charger Wrestling Squad had the most successful season in the history of W-BHS. Finish- ing the season 8-1 in duel meet action the Charg- ers took second place in the CWC. The Chargers also sponsored the Charger Invitational Wrestling Tournament which was won by Wis. Rapids. Thanks to the hard work and determination of Coach Christianson we have a wrestling team the school can be proud of. The kid ain't mine!! Nothing like an exciting match to stimulate the body! 107 Cagemen in Action You wAnt to slap five now? Nice dribbling Bob, but you don't have the ball! Stupid ball, are you coming or not?? Two for the Chargers!! 108 Basketball When in a crowd - punt!! When he said let the air out of the ball he didn't really mean it! Charger Fans!! The 1971-72 Charger Basketball Team set out to be the best team ever to come out of W-B, and this they accomplished by all criteria. Coach Poock took nine players from Mr. Rewey's fine J-V team and along with three returning lettermen, created a well round- ed team. The team finished high in the conference race and had a good overall record. Although five players will graduate from this squad, the Chargers should be a team to contend with for a long time to come. Look out, its coming down! 109 Track ’71 TRACK POINTS D. Hanke M. The Chargers finished the season with only a 2-8 overall record. The team played some fine ball against their better opponents but seemed to let down in games that should have been easy wins. More encouraging is the outlook for the '72 base- ball season. The team lost just five players through graduation and has lettermen returning at nearly every position. Under the fine leadership of Coach Rewey, the Green Machine should get wheels in '72. It's a home run!! Strike Four??? i ms is a job tor super power Axion!!!
