A TRIBUTE MR. MAJOR R. MC NEIL MSNEIL The 1986 REVIEW'S TRIBUTE is dedicated to Mr, Major R. McNeil, who served as principal of Withmw ftomjune, 1979, thtu july, 1985. Mt. McNeil demonstrated effective school and community leadership that resulted in improved academic performance of the students and professional performance of the faculty and general staff. He supported intellectual and professional development that saw Withrow's faculty win five awards from the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, three Fulbright fellowships, and fellowships from the Academy of Independent Scholars and the U.S. Japan Foundation. Under Mr. McNeil's management, Withrow was credited with a turnaround. He advanced the cause of student leadership, athletic competition, and scholastic recognition. In 1983, the school won a $21,000 grant from the Ford Foundation, and in 1984 and 1985, Withrow won a $32,000 and a $40,000 grant, respectively, from the Districts Educational Mobility Fund. During his principaiship, students received scholarship to prestigious universities and won awards at the state and national level for their academic and vocational performance, and the International Studies ACademy grew from 8 to 500 students. Mt. McNeil also served the larger community. He was a conference leader for the Leadership Cincinnati and had served as a consultant to schools nationwide interested in the International Baccaiaureate Program. In 1984, he was a representative of the Ford Foundation High School Recognition Program at the National Association of Secondary School Ptincipalsi Conference in Nevada and was a tespondant to the federal report A Nation at Risk . Mt. McNeil was a premier Withrow Booster, asserting that Withrow's graduates would continue to make significant contributions to the quality of life in the Cincinnati community and the world. He demonstrated his most famous slogan as a re' ality- Withrow is Americais most comprehensive high school, with something for everyone and the best for most.
