FORE WARD The REVIEW comes to you as a result of hard work and dedication to preserving 1985-86. As you turn the pages of this book, it is my wish that you will be reminded of the aspirations, achievements, activities, and friendships you have cherished this year. In years to come, may the REVIEW serve to inspire memories of what Withrow High School offered you and how your response to that offer shaped your character, gave you direction, honed your talents, and opened career and educational opportunities to you. Lionel H. Brown, Ed.D., Principal In 1981 the Nora May Nolan Bridge Committee was established at Withrow High School to restore the beloved Withrow Bridge which had been declared unsafe and was barricaded by the City of Cincinnati for three years. The committee raised $165,000 and the bridge was restored and named in honor of Nora May Nolan a cherished friend and Withrow teacher for many years. Approximately $15,000 in remaining funds was used to: 1. Landscape, including re-establishment of five small gardens 0n the campus. tGarden Tours, Inc., donated 12 beautiful bushesJ 2 Repair the fountain and plant seasonal bulbs. tBulbs are planted yearly on the hill 3, Repair the clock and tower chimes. tYearly inSurance paid from our funds enables us to keep both goingJ l4. Replace loose brick. 5. Help carpet the library. 6. Present a Shakespearen actor for the students. In january, 1985, the Nora May Nolan Bridge Committee officially became'the Friends of Withrow. The Friends have an elected heard of 20 trustees composed of alumni and civic leaders, The main purposes ofthe group are to continue improvement of the school and to maintain a Close relationship between school and community. The first activity for the Friends , compiling the names of all 65 classes of Withrow graduated, has resulted in the organization of 33 class lists thus far. Christmas, 1985 was a truly beautiful occasion at Withrow. The 'lFriends funded the lighting ofthe bell tower and the bell tower and the front balcony. One hap- py resident called to tell us that the tower looked like a crown of jewels. With the help OfWithrOW teachers Sonya Brock, Mary El- len Pesek and john Temple, the Friends decorated the bridge and previded a lovely Christmas tree for students in the main lobby. We plan to continue to generate funds annually for the improvement of Withrow's facilities and programs. Withrow High School has the most devoted alumni in the city of Cincinnati who love and cherish their school. The Friends are challenging Withrow's Staff, students and community to assist in supporting academic excellence and the ongoing development of our campus and buildings. He left Withrow in 1975, then returned in 1978, He has taught chemistry and physics in addition to mathematics, and plans to continue work elsewhere; following his retirement from Cincinnati Public Schools. Best to you! iBunthy Vinl Mr. Henry Douglass has been teaching at Withrow for almost seven years. He teaches science and biology for the most part, but he has also taught job relationed skills. He attended college in Little Rock, Arkansas, and was graduated from the University of Cincinnati. Before coming to Withrow, he taught at Cutterjr. High. He has worked in the Cincinnati Public Schools for nearly 25 years. In his spare time, he enjoys writing and Fishing. Best Wishes in your active years of retirmentl iSharon Albersl She's the best teacher llve ever had iRon Bamhartl She one of a kind iMarlo Smithy. She knews what teaching is all about? Genny Becky. Who is she? She's Mrs. Miriam Stefanik, who retired onjanuaty 17th after over thirty years of service. Mrs. Stefanik first became interested in teaching when she was a little girl, who played teacher with her brothers and sisters. She has taught in a number of schools; including Woodward, Hughes, Courter Technical, and Harriet Beecher Stowe School in Cincinnati. At one point in her career, she was freshman advisor at Miami University. In Mt. Morris, Michigan, Mrs. Stefanik taught third grade at a consolidated school. The superintendant there involved her in Chaperoning seniors on a trip throughout the eastern United States, an experience which inspired her love of field trips. In 1974, Withrowls principal asked her to become a full-time teacher at Withrow. She has taught English, business, and music, but her true love was speech and drama instruction. She has also served as the cheerleader, TOWER NEWS, and junior class advisor. After having taught for almost twelve years at Withrow, Mrs. Stefanik says, I have enjoyed teaching very much and have never regretted a minute of it . We would like to take this Opportunity to say farewell and good luck to someone who took Withrow to heart'i iLori Cooper 8: Dai Danielsl Thank you and may God ever bless your endeavors from the Tiger Administrators, teachers 7 and students. IN MEMORY OF . . . Mr. WALTER SCOTT, teacher of printing in our vocational educational department for more than ten Um years His dedicated service to Withrow students has afforded many, many lives a better than adequate life-style. Mr. Scott expired during the summer of 1985, Mr. REGINALD PAYNE worked on Our school's security staff. A man who possessed an electric personality, upon meeting him, one would always receive his charming smile. He faithfully served the Withrow Family for more than a decade. Mr. Payne will long be remembered for his winning charm, and fair play in working with the student body of Withrow High School. Master Marcus Daniels, student . V A One of the most devastating losses to the Withrow community was the death of MarCus, an excellent student as well as a beau- tiful person. Marcus was felled by a dreaded disease, during his freshman year as a Withrow Tiger. Aware of his physical infirmity, and their consequences; he ardently strove to attend school daily. MarCus will be remembered for the courage he er hibited in the face of personal tragedy, and how he would not be defeated. Marcus, we miss you dearly. lTrenton Shuttlesworthl THIRD SEATl LAST ROW Marcus, life must have seemed unkind and cruel, Life must have seemed like combat or a struggling duel, But you, Marcus, you were a class act of the highest bill, You were full of courage, determination, iron will. I Inw the radiation take your hair, I saw your color grow pale and fair, I saw the blisters invade your lips, I saw the weight drop off your hips. I watched you curiously as the days progressed, And I knew by Christmas how much you had retrogressed, But I could not believe how you struggled to do your school work. Knowing very well what clouds in your futured did lurk. You attended school in the snow, and you attended school in pain, And must have gallantly to simply remain sane, And Marcus, you taught me the most valuable lesson, That sometimes dignity is one's blessing. There are no answers why face had to single you outI Life is often unfair, there is no doubt, But can there be pleasure unless intermingled with pain, And can there be sunshine existing without the rain? And can there be life without the presencu of death? Even your tender youth could not save your breath. But you were the most remarkable boy I have had the pleasure to Know, But I always want to remember the little Ioldler. third aunt, last row. Vicki Thornberry A TRIBUTE MR. MAJOR R. MC NEIL MSNEIL The 1986 REVIEW'S TRIBUTE is dedicated to Mr, Major R. McNeil, who served as principal of Withmw ftomjune, 1979, thtu july, 1985. Mt. McNeil demonstrated effective school and community leadership that resulted in improved academic performance of the students and professional performance of the faculty and general staff. He supported intellectual and professional development that saw Withrow's faculty win five awards from the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, three Fulbright fellowships, and fellowships from the Academy of Independent Scholars and the U.S. Japan Foundation. Under Mr. McNeil's management, Withrow was credited with a turnaround. He advanced the cause of student leadership, athletic competition, and scholastic recognition. In 1983, the school won a $21,000 grant from the Ford Foundation, and in 1984 and 1985, Withrow won a $32,000 and a $40,000 grant, respectively, from the Districts Educational Mobility Fund. During his principaiship, students received scholarship to prestigious universities and won awards at the state and national level for their academic and vocational performance, and the International Studies ACademy grew from 8 to 500 students. Mt. McNeil also served the larger community. He was a conference leader for the Leadership Cincinnati and had served as a consultant to schools nationwide interested in the International Baccaiaureate Program. In 1984, he was a representative of the Ford Foundation High School Recognition Program at the National Association of Secondary School Ptincipalsi Conference in Nevada and was a tespondant to the federal report A Nation at Risk . Mt. McNeil was a premier Withrow Booster, asserting that Withrow's graduates would continue to make significant contributions to the quality of life in the Cincinnati community and the world. He demonstrated his most famous slogan as a re' ality- Withrow is Americais most comprehensive high school, with something for everyone and the best for most. .de ---- ,M , ! me,.mau,z, wmw Cafeteria Helpers are very necessary- 1986 RE VIEW STAFF LETTER FROM THE EDITOR It's finally over! I do not believe there is any possible way I can convey to you the enormous accomplishment this annual represents, At the beginning of this school year, the annual was in disarray. There was no adviser, no staff. no support, and apparently among the student body. no concern. The word yearbook had a negative connotation. In October. with the first deadline long Overdue, Reverend Mitchell became the yearbook advisor. Soon, things began to change. The annual was named the Review and soon gained momentum and support. A Staff was formed, an advertis- ing campaign was 1aunched,and a saies strategy was developed. Kipp Stewart, the yearbook company reptesentative, went above and beyond the call of duty in teaching preparation techniques and even helping draw layouts and typing. I remember staying until eleven o'clock some nights with Reverend Mitchell and others, working, We were almost iocl-ted in the school for the night a couple chimes, By the final deadline, Mitchell. 1, and the test of the staff were thoroughly exhausted. The handful of Students and adults, with bags undet their eyes, has accomplished what had been labeied an impossible task. The staff apologizes for any errors and we ask you to excuse them When pressed for time, as this staff definitely was, mistakes are bound to occur. However, the overall quality of this annual overwhelms its faults. The simple fact is that this book is MUCH better than none at alL Without Reverend Mitchell and the Review Staff, there would have been no annual. That fact, combined with the quality of the Review , its financial success, and the hard work that so many individuals put forth. make it the grand achievement and quality annual Withtow deserves. We have come a very long way from adolescence to young adulthood. Weive had our ups and downs; ins and outs. Iknew from the beginning of Our Freshman year that the Class of 1986 could not be limited within any boundary. With Mrs. Berry and Mrs. Mitchell on our side, we have continuously striven to become known as the Most Dynamic Class ever to have graduated from Withrow High School. Asjuniors, we, along with The Friends of Withrow, carpeted the Library and the Main Office. We also restored a fergotten tradition by honoring the Tap 100 Atademic Seniors of the Class of 1985 with a reception With the strong support of our advisors we introduced a Senior Package Plan to facilitate senior expensese This, we have earnestly attained our class motto, THE CLASS WITH CLASS .
