With all the talent on the team look for them to improve even more next yearl 28 Withrow 82 Glen Este 51 Wilhrnw had an easy time crushing 3 Glen Esta 82-51. in the firsi round of tournament play at the Cincinnati Gar- dens. The Tigers were in full command of the. game from the sound of the starting buzzer lo the very end. 29 Withrow 55 Springfield N orth 47 The Withrow Tigers defeated Springfield North 55-47, to advance in the regionals at Dayton. At half time it was a very close game, with Withmw ahead by a slim margin of 35-33. In the second half Withrowhs game began to improve. Treasure the bad times and say you learned something Love your friend as you love yourself and never let anything come between you Laugh and take time to stop and smell the flowers. Live, Love and Laugh. Shari L. Dozier Poetry 79 Charm Against Hate May you find love everywhere you go. May God come into your life and make you understand. May you hate your enemy so much that you feel the pain of his burdens. May you once he hated yourself so you know the torture. May you learn Love is the answer to any problem. Shari L, Dozier Waiting I shall not lie bleeding on the ragged shore Like the poor bleeding haIf-winged seagull Broken by senseless youths. Dazed and stunned by the ironies of human Guile, I rest wide-eyed 0n the oatey sand, Gazing into the mystery of the wandering stars. I Listening to the anger of the throbbing sea, I Waiting, I Waiting, : For the hope of dawn. Jane Greene Missing You As I lay here the tears stream down while I miss you. ItIs been so long. Yet- it was only yesterday . . , since you were a part of me. Last night you spoke so much wisdom without murmuring a whisper. I dreaded the dismal dawn Knowing we'd have to say goodbye It was so hard so difficult. You are the force which keeps my soul pure, Makes me aware of life's lovely treasurer, and allows me the desire to make life better I love you I need you. I miss you. J Senior Blues As I look back upon these days, I vaguely remember through the haze, Where the lime has gone, where it all went, Is it possible my three years have been spent? It seems rather odd and hard to say, That the twenty-fiflh will be my last day, All the friends I'll leave behind, Only to be seen again within my mind. Withrow, Withrow, donlt let go, There are so many things I still donit know, The world out there is just beyond. And my pampered life will soon be gone. Remember me always as I will you, Continue to help others see their way through, Donit let them pass through the haze, Please teach them to llnumber their days! john Humphries The Eye of The Beholder My camera is a friend Very important to me, Because without my lens There's no way I could see. Photography's my life And I do it fairly well, My destinyis to take pictures As a flower's is to smell. Although pictures cannot speak A thousand words they say, A camera is my companion I use it day by day. My work is just beginning It has a way to go. I'll keep on taking pictures Of life and times to show. Chip Donaldson Deathls Greatest Ally I can't see the tears for the rain And all through my head shoots this marvelous pain I can't see the tears for the rain. I lay here alone all the same While yesterday went and tomorrow came I can't see my peers for the pain. And never was I so alone as I am now My head is away and I'm floating somehow I can't see the heavens for the planes. And all of my peers where they once walked are lain Dead from the bombs of the hovering planes I can't see the Battlefield for the slain. I can not care to see anymore Because from the heat my eyes are red sore. And my blood from its body does pour. I cant see the tears for the rain. Ronald Tims Dreamy On a dark and dreary night Took my thoughts, a dreamy flight From their perch they boldly flew Into wicked skiesef blue. Darker skies live never known y Thoughts were tossed and rudely thrown And my mind, like wild winds blown Dived and turned from out the sky Forcing an unintelligent cry. Seeing now, much to my despair The light of a dark nightmare. Ronald Tims 135 Withrowts Beauty Captured on Canvas This drawing by V. This year he is doing the same thing, except he is now a teacher at Withrow and graduating to the head basketball coaching position at Cowley County Community College in Arkansas City, Kansas. 3 Mr. Ferone taught at Schroder junior High School before coming to With- 1 row. He has been at his alme meter for the past seven year. Six of those years he has been the head basketball coach. Since Mr. Ferone has been coach, Withrow has had a very prosperous basketball team. The overall record for the six years is 81-37. The past two years the team has made it to the regional playoffs. As the new coach of Cowley County Community College we wish you the same success and pleasure that Withrow has brought to you, Mrs. Anne McCarthy will be greatly missed. She has been a friend of many people through her teaching career, which started at Peoples Junior High School. After teaching there for a couple of years she was transferred to Sa- wyer Junior High before coming to Withrow. Although the teaching field was enjoyable for her. Mrs. McCarthy has moved on to other areas, working now for Progressive Ins. Co. in Cleveland. We hope that your new job brings you happiness and fulfillment in your career goalsl After thirty eight years of teaching Mr. James Parke is finally calling it quits. y He has been at Withrow for the past twelve years, Before coming here be t taught in Northern Ohio for two years, then twelve years. After that he taught t at Taft for seven years before going to Aiken for another five years. Since coming to Cincinnati, Mr. Parke and Mr. Conway the chorus director, t have been a music combination for eighteen years. 1 Now that he is retiring, he will have a chance to do what he really likes to do. His hobbies are raising flowers and traveling. After many years of dedication and hard work for the Cincinnati School System, Mrs. Gladys Corry is retiring to pursue personal committments. Her skill as treasurer and bookkeeper will be missed and we wish her much luck in the future. 150 152 NO matter how hard we try, we know we are not going to make everyone happy with this annual. They provided competent and much needed advice through difficult times. Mrsl Nancy Ballard deserves the majority of credit for this book. She helped hold it together and get it to press. Whether introducing new faculty members, encour- aging athletic development, or sharing personal experi- ences each man compli- mented Withrow with his own individual style. .-,. - .-.....-n-wwmm Mr. Robert Lowe Mr Joseph C. Aycr .-. ,. V'vrr4 It was a bright September morning in 1919 when the doors of East High School were first opened. In that first week, about twelve hundred eightyweight pupils were enrolled. Finishing touches were being given to the building and people lived through those first days to the accom- paniment 0f the installation of the lockers. A trumpet was the signal for the passing of classes and crude tables were provided for the lunchroom. Yet, in a few days, everyone felt quite at home. At first, the school was called East High School until the Board of Education renamed it Withrow in 1924 in honor of Dr. Withrow. We are now celebrating our sixtieth anniversary year and it is a fitting time not only to remember those years with pride, but to resolve that in the years to come, Withrow shall not falter in its duty to our commu- nity and to our country in the education of its youth. Back In Time 188 T0 Days Gone By 190 When school re-opened in September of 1920, several changes had taken place. The corridors had lockers in the place of holes in the walls, two gyms and two swimming pools were ready for use and the football stadium, with a capacity of 8000, was ready. Gt was not sodded until 1923i A magnificient pipe organ was donated by Mr. Richard K. LeBlond. whose company is still located at Edwards and Madison Roads. The Tower News was organized in 1921 as a bi-weekly paper supported entirely by subscriptions. Reserves Sporl Mgdinm Seamn h A: Is Shown By 121' 3-3 Retard m. Several teachers are former students of Withrow, and even the most re- cent principal. Mr. Thomas DlAmico, worked at this alma mater. Other notable graduates include: former radio sports personality, Dick Bray. who scored the first points in football and basketball, and the first run in baseball, at Withrow; Jimmie Dodd, former head Mousketeer 0n the original Mickey Mouse Club; singer Rosemary Clooney, former television star on WLW, Ruth Lyons; sports- man, Ed Brendamour; current radio personaiity, Stan Matlock; and former Chairman of the Board of Procter and Gamble, and Secretary of Defense in the Eisenhower Administration, Neil McElroy. David Richard lane Greene 191 While the campus and its buildings are impressive, it is the clock tower that symbolizes Withrow. Standing 115 feet high, it is the center of the entire school plan. Inside the tower are 110 steps leading to windows above the clock, where, on a clear day, one can see for miles. A carillon that taps the Westminister Chimes was added in 1969. When working, it plays chimes every quarter hour and tunes at 3:00 PM, Currently, the chimes are not being used, but tunes are played on special occasions. In the biase 0f the tower is inscribed, from the Book of Psalms, ttSo teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom? Many thousands of students have done just that in true Withrow tradition. 192 Another Withrow Tradition TO WORK CREATIVELY 'IUCITI'HER IS DIVE instrels From M T0 Sounds 193 Sixty Years of Athletics ' .
